Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

So I think I am going to upgrade from my pioneer plasma 43" 720p/1080i set to a panasonic zt60. For that price range ($2500) is that the best bet? Should I grab the panasonic or jump on 4k at the extra price?

Get a ZT or VT. It's the only thing you will probably be happy with maybe a F8500. I still have my 500M and still use it almost daily when in the office but the ZT was the only logical step up from my 500M and VT30

So I went to check the VT60 today at best buy with some friends. I'm looking at the VT60, I'm telling them how amazing this tv is, I notice they're silent, I look back and realize their jaws are on the floor at the visuals being displayed by all the 4k T'vs around, especially Sony's. I could not believe that 4k Tv's look THAT good. They made the VT & ZT look prety bad.
Now I'm thinking I should wait till CES to see what happens. 4K must become affordable asap! :/

Hmmm...wish I had a place to see them side by side.

There's not a lot of 4k content anyway, why wait? Just upgrade when 4k is much cheaper and there's more content out there. Enjoy the now.

I was also floored by the 4K sets but knowing there's no content and it'll be years until there is (plus console games barely do 1080p consistently) combined with super high prices for the name brands made steering clear really easy.

Also feeling stupid for not buying the W900A locally since waiting until next Wednesday morning is killing me a little.

Anyone have a good HDMI splitter they can recommend? I plan to have my PC nearby hooked up to my monitors normally but being able to switch to the TV would be rad.

Get the ones from Monoprice. They work fine.

A plasma is never going to show as well in a store environment like Best Buy, especially with all the massive lighting in there. Assuming you don't have such lights in your viewing area, it will look far better at home. Store showrooms don't do it justice, particularly in comparison to torch mode LCD's that draw most people like a moth to a flame. Get it home though, and it's a different story.

The Kinivo 5-port switch is amazing and comes with a remote. But of course it also auto-switches.

Using an ASUS LED monitor with my PS4 right now and it's treating me quite well. Surprised with all the Plasma answers, didn't realize that tech was still going strong.

Yeah you're right.
I'm just waiting till CES to see if the VT drops a little bit more.
There's more demand for them now, 2012 and 2013 models are going to be the peak of the Panny Plasma legacy, I've already seen used ones selling with markup, so I'd jump now while you can afford it and find one. Shame there won't be 2014 models, I got an ST50 over an ST60 because of the lag issue, and since I remember reading that the ST60 was gimped hardware-wise (compared to GT/VT/ZT), there is little hope that the input lag issue will be fixed with firmware.

Same. I don't mind waiting for the plasmas to drop some more as well. If they sell out then so be it.

Yeah that's the same mindset I have.
Any particular price you're hoping for?
I don't know what the drop off is around CES, but I'm hoping for 20-30 % off.

Most retailers still have them. Depends on whether you'll pay the price.

ST60 is available on amazon. That is a good model w/ good input lag right? I currently have the PZ85u which I love but these new models look too sexy to pass up.

From what I've read, it's a great tv, great picture, not for competitive gaming though. It has really bad input lag.
If you don't play competitive (FPS, Fighting games) it may not be much of a problem.

obviously, it's not. :(

Some reasons:

I'm disappointed that we, as reviewers, were unable to help keep plasma alive. From outdated notions on burn-in to poor performance on the show floors of big box retailers, it faced an uphill fight for a few years now despite always offering a superior image and value. Now I have to go buy an ST60.

My family room can be just as bright as those show rooms. A good LED is superior for 95% of my applications and has barely any trade-off at all for those other 5%. The blacks are just as good as anything short of a VT or ZT and motion interpolation isn't an issue. Also superior lifespan, energy usage and way less chance of IR. Maybe the reviewers in their dark rooms have it wrong.

agree, ST60 has the worst input lag from tests altho some people will say Game mode alleviates it. Some people said they don't even notice so up to you. VT/ZT are supposed to be better for games.

Yeah that's the same mindset I have.

under a grand. apparently i missed when Amazon had the S60 60" for under $999 before the Panny announcement of ending the production. Really pisses me off cuz it was before Amazon taxed my state as well. :(

I am considering buying a new TV that will last for a while specs wise, but a 4K TV isn't really feasible ATM. What TV would you guys recommend, as Vizio's TV's look good, but I can't get them as I live in the UK?

Heh, my PZ85U just crapped out (which I loved as well), and I just received my ST60 today. I'm breaking it in until Tuesday, but I'll report back then. I did an immense amount of research though, and there's steps (including in this very thread) of how to eliminate the worst of the input lag. I'll be curious to see first hand, but I'm optimistic.

I was running break in slides last night on my s60 when i went to sleep, and did it with my PC plugged into the HDMI because I couldn't find a thumbdrive..... a fucking windows notification popped up (please setup a backup) and knocked it back to the desktop, where it sat all night because of course i didn't have a screensaver set up because it's a new PC and i never bothered. UGH. It was pretty bad and extremely noticeable. I ran the screen wipe for 20 mins and it's completely gone though! I still feel incredibly stupid.

unfortunately the ST60's have the worst input lag of this current gen of panasonic plasma's. if you check out the thread on avsforum you will find varying opinions, some ppl think its acceptable, others say its pretty bad. but the set has awesome PQ price/performance.

Got a 55 inch samsung led yesterday and for some reason decided to play FEZ on it. My gawd it look so good. I feel like playing all my old games over again just to see what I was missing all these years.

Had a 32 inch samsung 720p for a long time.

Not sure if it's really really good. But I like it. Think I'm good for a couple a years lol.

Woo, just got a £100 refund on my TV. Bought the Sony 50W685 on Sunday for £799 and randomly saw a TV add for the same shop (currys) with it for £699. They also do a 7 day price match so I price matched them against themselves :)

Btw, for any UK gaffers, this is a good gaming set with low input lag (Sony were using the 42" versions with PS4 demos) and is basically the same as the W656 but with 3D and £699 is basically the cheapest I've seen either set in the Uk so far

I will have a look at this model mate, as my current TV isn't making the most of my PS4 experience.

Because ISF calibration is too expensive for most and his settings are close enough and certainly better than the presets that come with the set.

No they're not and will only give you even higher delta errors than out of the box THX/True Cinema settings. This applies to every manufacturer by the way.

Anyone with the Panasonic tc-p50s60 able to help with calibration settings? Everything I'm finding online has the brightness at 0 and the gamma at 2.2.

However, with these settings, both Killzone and BF appear really dark on my tv. Should I just adjust the gamma within each game?

For reference, these are the calibration settings I'm using currently: http://forums.cnet.com/7723-19410_102-591233/panasonic-tc-p50s60-picture-settings/

EDIT: Removed incorrect link.

GAF, help me decide between the W900A and a P60VT60 (or ZT60). The W900A seems like a great gaming TV, but the plasmas have the much better motion resolution. I currently have a 46" XBR8 and love it, but am looking for something bigger with lower input lag.

Plasmas sure suck down the power. I have left the TV on basically the entire month since I have gotten it because I run the break in slides and the pixel jogger all the time when I'm not using it. My power bill went from $50 last month to $150 this month.

The good news is that IR from long gaming sessions is improved and persists for shorter periods of time now.

There's no way your plasma is costing you an additional $100 a month in electricity. If anything it might go up $5 - $10, but that's it. I've had my ST60 for awhile now and there has been a negligible difference in my monthly bills. You must have other costs factoring in...

The Sony TV will give you some of the best input lag in the market, only bested by smaller Sony W models. Low motion resolution is something that you will forever deal with with LCDs. There are some settings that increase it to 1080p but at best you'll either be dealing with decreased brightness or, at worst, motion interpolation.

anyone transport their LED TVs flat? or standing.

I'm picking up my W900a but the only vehicle I have is small and will need to lay it flat. Heard that it's not good for the screen.

Had my Panasonic VT65 since May and it still blows me the fuck away every time I turn it on - also my friends and family too. The best TV purchase I've ever made, PS4 and Wii U just look sublime on it. Can't recommend it highly enough, especially now there are so few left to purchase - get in there before it's too late.

Yeah I got mine over a month ago and it's insane. Moments of awe anything I put anything high quality through it. Not a single regret.

EDIT: Found these from earlier in the thread. Will try. http://www.avsforum.com/t/1466472/2013-panasonic-settings-issues-thread

Try adjusting the black extension and panel brightness settings. Leave gamma alone. CNETs settings are for low light conditions similar to a movie theater. They work well for that.

So put both BF and killzone's gamma at the default 50%? I'm in a pretty dim basement so the cnet settings should be fine. I'll give your suggestions a try.

Youre supposed to do it standing but a few minutes in the car is fine, just dont drive too crazy.
