Okay, just watched the trailer, and holy shit this looks beautiful. I mean, dat open world. and dat battle system. Looks so fluent.

Does anyone think the battle system will be more akin to Xenoblade's? Not in the mechanics, but in the way you enter the battles. Like, you target a monster on screen and then a battle begins in the open area.

There's only one problem I have with this announcement so far:

The story:
War between the Highland Kingdom and the Lawrence Empire

UGGGGH. Come on Namco, this is what? The fourth game involving a war between two or more countries? Seriously, Abyss, Graces, Xillia? At this point, these wars are just placeholders to stall for time so the real plot can kick in hours later.

I don't get it, why do all these fantasy games need to involve a war of some sort? Not that it's a bad plot point, it's just being overused, and they can only spice things up a bit so many times.

Whatever. I hope this thing just stays in the background while the whole dragons story gets more focus.

i hope the male character is a mage/support and the girl is the melee/tank/dps main character.

Would certainly be better.

To be fair, what else can you talk about other than war in a large fantasy world? Without any kind of conflict, people don't fight. Without fighting, this may as well not be a RPG.

We kinda already got that with Xillia. Jude could heal and raise stats, while Milla could work both with melee and ranged spells.

Having steel =/= being a support character unless self buff on a melee character counts. Also Jude got two healing spells (healer and recover ring for statuses) which largely feel like they were given to him out of necessity because a true blue healer didn't join for the first 4-5 hours

I agree, and I hope

Really starting to wish ps4 was backwards compatible. Entertainment center looks so clean with only ps4. At this rate my ps3 will still be out into 2015 lol.

Disappointed it's on PS3. I need something to play on PS4 this year.

Apart from that, open world-ish would be nice. Not a lot to go off from this trailer. Hopefully costumes find their way back into the vanilla game.

I actually do. I said this was probably the direction the series should go last year and go lambasted by quite a number of people. I think Aeana was one of them....

I prefer battles to remain in a confined arena. I don't want sloppy field design to get in my way when I fight.

And there's some games that just can't easily be done on handhelds as it is, not without heavy compromising anyway. If they wanted a Persona roughly in line with the PS2 games for instance... yeah, that can work on 3DS probably,

Nope. Probably not.

I'm just saying at this point its a bit bland for Country A to be in conflict with Country B.

"It's a mythical tale about a legend of dragons! Oh and there's a war going on over there."

Just feels a bit lazy is all. Not that this is going to stop me from buying the game. I'm just looking for a little more innovation when it comes to Tales stories.

Fair enough I guess. We haven't really seen a male character to serve as the light healer casting spells.

Just woke up and saw this.

I like the gal's design, don't care for the guy's.

Battle system looks different? More of an action adventure-y viewpoint?
Dragons are cool I guess.

Looks like Tales otherwise.

Character designs look pretty terrible. I don't think that bothers me with these games though.

Tales games are like the greasy cheeseburgers of videogames.I'll play it, and when I'm done, I'll have enjoyed it but not be sure why, and it will have made no impact on me whatsoever.

Yeah, I've seen the fast food metaphor used a few times. I don't know why but it just fits.

Sometimes you just fucking want a damn burger, you know?

Exactly! Sometimes I want to sit back and play a game that I don't particularly care about, where I can drown out the ridiculous story and dialogue and whatnot and just listen to a podcast.

It's what JRPGs are great for.

I traded in my PS3 before FFX HD, Xillia and Xillia 2. And now this? Fml.

For a PS4? Seems like bunches of people traded in their old systems for the new ones. Not me. Going to wait until the very last second. Even then I probably will keep my PS3.

I still have my ps2 hooked up, lol. 3 playstation generations on the entertainment stand. Though I think I can finally put it away. Maybe in a decade the ps3 can be shelved as well, haha.

Yup. Eb games gave 50% extra credit for a ps4 trade in in July.

Looks good in those off screen screenshots. Wish it was a cross gen release though.

Nope. Probably not.

There's not a single reason why a Persona game in line with the PS2 games wouldn't work on 3DS. The 3DS is more than powerful enough to display Persona 4's graphics (which weren't even all that good to begin with) and file size wouldn't be a problem, either -- in fact, Bravely Default already trumps both PS2 Persona games in term of file size.

I will laugh if this game runs like technical garbage and we get a DC port a year later for the PS4. lol

Slay was designed by Fujishima, and Alicia/Alisha by Okumura.

Really, are they still doing this split-designer shit

Just have one consistent aesthetic for the characters.

Behind the back camera for the characters in battle is real weird, but maybe it's just a visual flair for the trailer.

I'm not one to say "I'm all next-gen now, fuck last-gen games!", but we're probably looking at mid- to late 2015 for this game, right? That's...a long time to keep my PS3 hooked up. The lack of backwards compatibility might finally become a nuisance by then.

On a positive note, I did not see any valleys and it looked like you were traveling an open field so that's already better than Xillia. If I can be guaranteed that field isn't the same in every area, I can be confident the Tales team is interested in making their worlds fun again.

that's a cute way of calling the 3DS.

3DS/PS3 are the king.

Yeah, I suppose you are not an European. I'll sit in a corner and continue waiting SMT IV... until then, I'm not buying a 3DS either.

Well, Tales of Vesperia was one of the best hamburgers I've ever eaten then. It even seemed steak at times. The last few bites could have been better, but that cheeseburger didn't taste like fast food most of the time :)

Why would it? Xillia, Graces F ran great. Or am I missing something?

Larger worlds with bigger stuff and more particles may cause technical problems....

It'll be sometime after August 2014.

Yeah, Vesperia was my favorite burger of the joint, haha

Oh my goodness, the characters. I'm not sure I like that change in character design.
It looks like they've gone a step further. And now their design is looking a bit more like Star Ocean 4's character design.

I rather prefer the character design in older Tales games to something more Star Ocean 4-esque.

It also sort of reminds me a little bit of the character design in the Xenosaga games. I also prefer the Tales design to the Xenosaga design. I hope that it can grow on me. Perhaps the pictures I'm seeing just doesn't do a very good representation of it. It's also possible that part of it is just that I'm just not all that fond of the first two characters shown, and that there isn't any kind of actual aesthetics shift going on, or that I'm inflating aesthetic differences because I don't like these first two character designs.

On the positive side, while I don't like her overall design. And I'm not sure what about it I don't like. It may just be aesthetics change. I'm glad that her design design isn't over-sexualized like Milla's was. Again, I'm getting these very strange Star Ocean 4 feelings from the design I'm seeing so far. And I don't like that. So I think that's probably influencing my lack of enthusiasm for the character design.

Other than that, this looks great! I really, really love the look of the new combat especially. It looks like they've really innovated the combat and taken a page out of franchises like Tera Online and Monster Hunter. From what I can tell, there's no screen switches. Which is something I've always wanted from a Tales game, I already enjoy that Tales hasn't had random battles since their very early days. But they still didn't have enemy battles on a separate field. While games like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy XII, and Kingdom Hearts, did away with this combat-field/exploration-field dichotomy years ago.

I can understand why they may not have, due to funding or plot limitations making them want to make use of field or screen switches. But it's great that they've been able to move forward from that. Again, it's something I've always wanted that I think will make Tales games all the more immersive.

That field is far too large to be a battle specific field. It's definitely an on-exploration-field battle. And it looks absolutely gorgeous. Definitely a step up from Tales of Graces and Tales of Xillia. And that battle looks very Monster Hunter-esque. Which I cannot possibly say is a bad thing.

I am very excited for exploring the world in that game. I hope that the plot is equally good to compliment their gameplay innovations. This looks to be a very proud Tales title thus far.

If they can do this with the PlayStation 3, I'm looking forward to what they'll be able to do with the PlayStation 4.

Xillia ran terribly at the end.

Battles would consistently dip in the endgame/postgame when there were more than three enemies. The game's reach far exceeded its grasp there.

Oh. That stuff don't bother me. The thing that bothers me is screen tearing. Really hard on the eyes. But low fps, or whatever is fine to me.

I was thinking for the west, though I suppose it makes me a bit of a hypocrite because I totally understood why Persona 5 needs to be on PS3 and have no problem waiting for that.

My only worry then is that I wonder how skittish Namco will be about localizing a PS3 game in late 2014/2015.
