what jrpg are you playing right now ?

gawd damn hype me more bro I started DDS1 yesterday night with about two hours of progress. Pretty good so far. Heat is a dick tho.

Nocturne came out before this and that had the sensor for encounters so it's an odd omission. Maybe it'll show up again later.

Heat is a major dick. He hasn't gotten better for me so far (I'm twenty-ish hours in).

Aw man, I try to avoid getting hyped up in case of crushing disappointment, and you're not helping. D:

Heat is a dick you say? Wait till you get to see what happens in DDS2 :P

I think I like DDS1 more than 2. The setting is better and so is the soundtrack. I've played DDS1 twice but DDS2 only once. DDS2 probably has the better story though.

About to start persona 4 golden. Never played a persona game before

My first was person 3 years ago when i had a PS2. I'm about five hours into P4 Golden. I knew what I was getting into, but you have to kinda give yourself time to get used to everything. After a couple ours, it's easier to to find yourself in a groove, knowing what to do and when. I'm now caught up in this the same way I was with P3, and on a handheld? It's glorious.

Hopefully itll live up to the hype for me. Im looking forward to it

I'm taking a small break from my Tales-a-thon, wherein I'm playing all of the localizaed Tales games in chronological order of release, and have started in on the Legend of Heroes series. So I grabbed Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes (the very first game in the series) through ulterior means a couple of days ago and I'm in chapter 4 of 5 I believe.

Holy crap this game was WAY ahead of its time in terms of mechanics. I cannot think of another JRPG that had these mechanics this early:
- Defeated in battle? You get a redo
- Status ailments cured upon battle end
- Full HP/MP restore upon level up
- Can switch between auto stat allocation and manual allocation (character customization)
- You learn spells for free from sages rather than obtained upon level up - build your spell casters the way you want
- As you liberate each area in the game, monsters completely disappear
- Monsters are visible on the overworld using Tel-Lens and visible in dungeons
- The Run command works 100% instantly, and you get a chance to manually move away from the enemy

For a game that was released around 1990, I am impressed how forward thinking the developers were. Some of those above mechanics wouldn't be adopted in JRPGs for years.

Star Ocean 4 and I'm frustrated.

The combat and item system in that game is incredibly fun - starting on the second playthrough. The first playthrough is so easy that every single nuance of combat or item creation is completely pointless. Get max regen bonus, pick a strong special, spam it and you win literally every single fight without much of any problem whatsoever. If you pick up an item go ahead and equip it - if you forget then whatever, it's no biggie. The last enemy required a bit of resurrection/restoration and 20 minutes of patience largely because I had no character who'd ever increased their skill in a healing type skill since there was never any need to. I literally never once used item synthesis.

Now playing through the game for the second time everything is so vastly more interesting. All of the hoards of interesting tactics they added in combat actually start to come in handy, item synthesis is not yet mandatory but certainly extremely helpful, and at the bare minimum I absolutely have to keep an eye to ensure my equipment is in tip top shape. The problem is that I don't really have much left to keep me going in the game anymore. The story, characters, etc are all done with. I unlocked nearly every single character's ending in one playthrough by simply talking to my crew between voyages. All that's left is the combat system and filling out the remaining battle trophies.

Basically it feels empty now. I'm so frustrated that the game's difficulty is gimped by default .This game would easily have gone from "passable" to certainly an upper tier JRPG in my book if the game started on the second difficulty level. In many ways it reminds me of Blue Dragon, although that game only went from somewhat bad to decent with the introduction of the so called "hard mode patch". Such a pity to leave a game feeling so uncompleted. Oh well.

About to start Recettear: an Item Shop's Tale.

Capitalism, ho!

how many trophies did you get on your first playthrough ? apart from the story ones

Persona 3 Portable being replayed at the moment.

Though I also have to get back to games like Wild Arms, Ni No Kuni, and Trails in the Sky that I played through partly then haven't touched for a long time.

I'm finishing up Tales Of Xillia (First Playthrough) today.
How similar are the Tales Of.... games to Vesperia? Vesperia is the only one out of the entire series I played but I have such good memories of it. I loved that game with my only complaint being long cutscenes you couldn't skip.

As someone who's typically been in the FFVII is overrated camp, I am shocked at how much I'm enjoying Crisis Core.

Finally got around to playing it some 5+ years after buying it and I'm rather impressed by the pacing of the story, the difficulty of the optional mission battles and the overall presentation. If Type-0 is anywhere close to this in terms of polish and gameplay we really missed out on something special.

Also, Cissnei is a hottie and whomever decided it was a good idea to have Carrie Savage provide her voice deserves a raise.

Xillia is certainly worth playing; I think you'd enjoy it. I personally feel Vesperia is the better game of the two though, despite being incomplete. It's a crying shame more people didn't pick up a 360 to experience it.

While Xillia may have a more streamlined and refined battle system, I was terribly disappointed at the over-simplification of other aspects of the game. Gone are the cooking and crafting systems I spent many hours enjoying, and gone are the more intricate puzzles. Everything aside from the battle system, characters, and story just feels slightly more dumbed-down.

One odd observation I made early on is that you can still collect a wide array of materials from enemies and the environment, but you can't really do anything with them other than dump them on shops. I guess you could say I wasn't a fan of the shop-leveling mechanics and would rather have synthesis back.

But again, still a good game. Looking forward to 2.

beaten the story of Etrian Odyssey 4 last night, took me about 50 hours. Will probably wait with the post-game content and start SMT IV today :)

Right now I'm splitting my time between Xenoblade, Final Finatasy X HD remaster, Bravely Default For The Sequel, and Sora no Kiseki FC. A lot to play but it's my long vacation of the year. At this moment spending most of today on FFX. It's been a real joy replaying this one. I really love both the vita and ps3 versions of the game. Brings back so many good memories.

Super Mario RPG. I've wanted to go through most of the Mario series lately, which includes the platformers, the spin-off series (DK, Wario, Yoshi) and RPGs.

Bravely Default, and it´s the first JRPG I actually really enjoy since a long time. The flexibility to just turn the random battles on or off or switch the difficulty on the fly makes a huge difference to me. I simply HATE mandatory random battles. The super cool battle fast forwarding helps a lot, too.

The story is pretty much complete nonsense, but I´m enjoying the game for the intricate job system and the nearly endless ways you can combine jobs, sub-jobs and support skills. Easily the biggest draw for me, aside from the incredibly well-designed characters. I know some people don´t like them, but I find it really hard to go back to more typically anime-styled games now - these here are chibi, sure, but they look more like little puppets and nobody has pink or blue hair or squeals all the time.

I also have Tales Of The Abyss 3DS right now, but I don´t really know how I feel about it. I got it because people praised the battle system, but so far it´s been very tough for me to wrap my head around it. Everything about the art style and the characters feels also very generic - the intentionally annoying main character is actually the best one so far. At least he kicks that dumb "mew" or whatever it´s called once in a while. Hopefully the game gets more mechanically interesting later on, that´s really all I want from an RPG - that part where you go into the forest in the beginning was annoying, but a lot of JRPGs start off dull and uninteresting at first, so I guess l´ll stick with it some more. That "generic smart dude with glasses" looks really punchable, though.

Playing thru Nier right now
just after the aerie got nuked
. The music is fantastic, humming in my head for days now... But he game is depressing at times.

Dunno what to slot next... Xilla (is it a good Tales game to start with?), Ni no Kuni, FF V/VI or Xenogears.

Haven't played Persona 2 yet, so am thinking if IS or EP to start too.

Imo FF VI is by far the best game in your list. I also love XG (apparently) but I don't think that it has aged well and despite loving the OST and some plot elements there are also some obvious flaws to it, while FF VI is a more balanced game overall with less flaws.. The plot is simple but good, character development is great and the OST is also excellent.

I would leave FF5 for later, it is kinda simple but the battle system is fun and addictive. Xilia is ok as a starting point, but if you also have Vesperia I think that it is the better choice.
I didn't like Ni No Kuni, I found it to be pretty generic and boring but that's just my opinion.

No idea about P2, I have never touched it.

Going to start Xillia sometime early next week. I thought about just skipping it for a while but January is such a barren month for new games so I figured I'd give it a try, as I've been a fan of the series for quite a while. I'm not expecting anything great, but I hope I enjoy it.

Abyss starts off really slow but get better and less generic as the story goes on. Battle system gets better too. Also Jade (the dude with the glasses) is not "generic smart dude with glasses" lol. You'll see.

Xillia is good to start with, yes.

I didn't really have any big expectations for Xillia as I started, just that I'd enjoy it, but it turned out a lot better than I expected.

Just picked up Ys Memories of Celceta.... a few hours in and really enjoying the combat so far. Reading the text blobs is a bit of a drag after playing Persona though.

Just gave up on FFIII. After 2 hours to get to the final boss I died, went on to grind for several hours and try again. Got within a couple of hits to finish it off and died. I'm sure in the future I'll go back into it and try again but for now I'm moving on to FFIV.

Funny. I just started a run on FF3 this past week. I couldn't decide whether to play the original or the 3D remake, so I went with alternating through both. I just got the Water Crystal in both games, and I'm having a good time with it. I'm thinking I might do the same with FFIV and play both the original and the remake together.

Finished Persona 3 Portable today, it was the third time for me but I still enjoy re-playing it. Really wished they made a definitive Vita version that really has all of the content because I'd be all over that.

Considering going through P4 again on PS2 but I will probably just wait until I buy a Vita.

I'm playing fire emblem awakening!, I'm loving it so far and it's the second game that made me go out and buy a 3DS XL

Thanks! I will stick with it. I just was really confused by the battle system, but intrigued, so I´m looking forward to learn more about it.

20hrs into sen no kiseki. By some random chance found a JP kindle like software that allows me to buy digital versions of all the popular magazines/books. I then bought the official dengeki guide and have been following it to the tee since. After finishing zero no kiseki with over 70hrs playtime and getting hardly any trophies I wasn't going to make the same mistake again.

Really liking the character interaction so far and the visuals are impressive for a handheld.
Also BDF for the sequel and FE arrived in the mail this morning so I'll be deep in RPGS for a while.

P4G just started on Vita
Bravely Default on 3DS

Life could be worse

Valkyria Chronicles. It's been in the backlog since 2010 and I decided to power through it while I have some time off around the holidays. As of last night, I'm on Chapter 18. Pretty good game, but maaan, am I ready for it to be over. It's gonna feel good when I (hopefully) beat it tonight.

No jokes about that last sentence. >_>

So finally got round to starting up Vesperia tonight. I'm pretty underwhelmed right now which is hard to do considering the woefully low bar set by other Tales games I have played. I was under the impression Vesperia had better characters and story than others in the series but so far its just not grabbing me. I've only just left the starting city though so I'm not calling it a day by any means.

Halfway through FF XII: Internation Zodiac Job on PCSX2 and am enjoying it more than vanilla XII. The fast forward switch is so nice to turn on when I am traversing long expanses or farming license points. It is a bit too fast, so I only switch it on when I need it.

Dragon's Dogma DA, and think the game really clicked with me after four restarts that quit when entering Gran Soren. Stellar combat and enjoyable questing and exploration. It's like I am living a D&D campaign.

Final Fantasy Tactics WOTL. Almost to that battle I have heard about against Weigraf. Kinda nervous, but glad I have multiple saves. This is my first time through the game and am finding it to be a great companion to play alongside FF XII.

Ys Celceta....but I can't say I like it that much. As an Ys game it is dissappointing the heck out of me. Pity since it was the reason why I bought the Vita in the first place.

How about other similar games of this era e.g. SoE, Illusion of Time, Terranigma, Seiken Densetsu 3? If I wasn't impressed by SoM due to the flaws that I mentioned, is there a chance that I will like more any of the above?
The big selling point for SoM that's not so evident nowadays is the multiplayer, back then RPGs with coop were rare.
However it's a deeply flawed game that aged rather badly.
What it has still going for it to these days is the colorful graphics and the amazing soundtrack.

SoE is somewhat a western take upon the SoE formula with different setting (and an equally awesome soundstrack by young Jeremy Soul).
Seiken Densetsu 3 is a more refined game compared to SoM, with some of the best pixel graphics to have ever graced the SNES.
It has some nice idea like multiple branches depending on the team/class you choose but it can get a bit tedious later on IMO.

Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma are the three action RPG developed by legendary Quintet (devs that worked on the first 2-3 Ys games...).
They have some common themes between them (the creation and destruction philosophy, you destroy enemies to unlock/create other things) but aren't direct sequels so you can play them in any order you want (with exception of some cameos).
Terranigma is the more RPG-ish and IMO is up there with CT, DQV and FFVI as the best RPG on the system.
But I would still recommend to play to SB and IoG (maybe you'll prefer them to Terranigma).

xenosaga 3 when i'm not playing ffxiv. i kind of miss the comboing from the first (and second? can't remember) but other than that i'm enjoying it.

Just started playing Valhalla Knights 3. (I suppose it is technically a JRPG?) And erm... I dont want to be too harsh on it without giving it a fair crack of the whip, but I haven't been impressed with anything so far apart from the combat, which seems to be pretty good.
