1990's Cartoon Survivor (Do-Over)

Courage had some creepy elements and charm, no dispute here. It was strong enough to last nearly two weeks on this list, which is an accomplishment... but I'm ready to send it off gracefully.

The best Cyclops ever was Age of Apocalypse Cyclops. He was a bad guy with brock samson hair. He blew off wolverines hand permanently while wolverine took one of his eyes. That has to be my favorite arc of all time.

I'll admit their covering of the Age of Apocalypse arc and Days of Future Past were really good.

I liked Reboot about as much as I liked Beast Wars, except Reboot had a bit more charm. Still, the show should've been gone a while ago.

Shit about to get real.

Kill: Courage the Cowardly Dog
Kill: Tiny Toons
Save: Doug

In retrospect, Tiny Toon was not that good of a show, especially compared to Animaniac. Courage the Cowardly Dog is one of those weird fucked up cartoon I never like.
Edit: change me vote

Courage is a top ten show. The most original show left on this list. For it to not make top 15 will be a travesty. Also, even though i'm doing nothing about it, it's a real shame - in my opinion - for Batman Beyond to outlast X- Men. Final Note - I'm astounded at the constant Arnold votes. For shame. For shame.

Kill: Doug - How is it that way better shows were kicked before this one?
Kill: Doug

Save: The Tick. Show was hilarious and awesome. The villains were great, the heroes were great. The show was just great.

Kill: The Tick The only reason I think this isn't gone yet is because nobody watched it. It seems like no one is defending it but at the same time no one is targeting it. I think it's just skating by while bigger names are getting targeted. We have a floater!
Kill: Doug

Save: Reboot, previous save was Tiny Toons, but apparently REboot is more in need of a save this round.

I mostly agree... but why Arnold? Such a great show....

I dunno I need something to target and I never cared much for it. Then again that's the time period when I switched from Nick to Cartoon Network.

Kill: X-Men
Kill: X-Men
Save: ReBoot

There are better superhero shows than X-Men, and my save was a tough choice between ReBoot and Courage. Both great shows with a decent-to-exemplary amount of originality.

Kill: Tiny Toons

Save: Hey Arnold

Tiny Toons was not very good at all. Its been largely ignored until now and I think it's time for it to go.

Well that's understandable. I almost missed Hey Arnold for the same reason. Glad I didn't miss it though. Great cast of characters and top notch story telling.

Migh as well go after DragonBall Z. I liked the original show, it had sense of whimsy and adventure.

DragonBall Z was just fight after another and they were always the same. Lots of training for the fight, that usually amounts to nothing, since the bad guy hasn't shown his true power yet, and in a pinch the good guys tap into their secret inner powers. boring.

Are you upset at all that The New Adventures of Johnny Quest didn't make the list? Sure your avatar is for Venture Bros, but at least some of the character design is based off Johnny Quest.

I second this sentiment; Nuh uh.

I sprinted home from the bus for years to catch DBZ. I imported PS1 games at ridiculous cost, bought absurd Hawaiian shirts, and so many action figures.

It also has better animation than almost anything left on this list, and is the best pure action show. No one in America had ever seen anything like it when it premiered, which is probably why it was a huge phenomenon.

I also agree with this.

Oh the things I have done for DBZ. I would wake up before 6 am to watch DBZ when the time slot was switched from 930 am to 6 am. In the time period that DBZ was removed from the WB and it wasn't on toonami just yet, I bought a ton of VHS' so that I could see what was happening next. Somewhere in my parents basement there are like 30 DBZ VHS.

X-Men just doesn't hold up well, other than the opening. The opening is still really good.
Kill: X-Men- I just don't think it holds up well. The opening is still a classic though. I also prefer Evolution to be honest
Kill: X-Men
I'm up for killing X-Men. I suspect a powerful defense force though. Some people can't look past that shitfest because of all the extraneous merchandise that they drowned their childhoods in. X-Men may just be the Transformers of the 90s.
More lies. Looking past some cheesy dialogue it's still fun to watch.

Holy Crap! How could I have forgotten about The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest. The 90's remake was soooo good.

Yeah, truly. X-Men holds up better than 90% of the other super hero/action shows that come to mind, which is something.

"This one's for you, Morph!"

It's also the longest running animated Marvel show. There's a cool run down and top ten list on AV Club here.

X-Men’s real achievement came in its use of serialized storytelling, borrowing some of the comics’ most epic arcs and either cribbing from them pretty straightforwardly (like the “Phoenix Saga”) or updating them nicely to mix with the series’ ’90s style (like “Days Of Future Past”). Most of the episodes were standalones, especially in the early days, but as the series progressed, it ran longer and longer plots of surprising narrative depth, and managed to keep its Saturday morning audience hooked. The show didn’t shy from X-Men’s classic hallmark of exploring themes of prejudice and racism, and never presented villain Magneto (who seeks mutant supremacy as a counter to Professor X’s dreams of integration) as a one-dimensional baddie.

I thought Tiny Toons was amazing as a kid. It was a huge love letter to the original Looney Tunes while still being able to build its own unique universe.

I wish the show was still streaming on Netflix. People should google "X-Men: The Animated Series streaming" to watch a couple episodes.

Kill: The Tick - A lighthearted superhero show that wasn't very funny.
Kill: Reboot - This is a show that doesn't hold up well (I've watched it recently).
Save: X-Men - Still awesome.

Save: The Tick (X-Men & Courage)

The Tick was under appreciated (SPOON! & Taft). I was excited when it got a live TV version that was as close to the cartoon as you could possibly get... unfortunately that was under appreciated too.

X-Men was an awesome cartoon even if the animation was LOL-worthy (X-jet flying away from the screen yet it's getting larger.... :/). So many good times with this show, but I've always been a Marvel fanboy.

Courage was weird and creepy and I enjoyed it even though I didn't watch it regularly.

Doug, Skeeter and Patti Mayonnaise I think have reached the end of their journey. It wasn't my favorite cartoon but it was entertaining for what it was, nothing all that special to me.

Probably nostalgia speaking, but Reboot was like, really good, man.

Edit: I had Gargoyles for kill up there first, but I've been convinced to vote otherwise.

Probably nostalgia speaking, but Reboot was like, really good, man. Why has Gargoyles survived this long? =/

Gargoyles had some of the best writing and themes of many of these cartoons. It was a lot deeper and dark than a lot of shows would even go at the time. It was reallly good.

This round will be all over the place. I love it.

eh, depends if we're not including posts that don't explain their choices. if we're not, then there's a pretty obvious frontrunner in the tick. doug, spongebob, and x-men all seem somewhat close.

if we are including votes where posters aren't explaining themselves, it looks like doug may exit this round too.

Yeah, Doug's taking a serious beating it looks like. I might have to change my save...

It's not time, Doug, it's not time for you to go!

Also, post #s are almost into the 1990s!

[edit] sweet, I got 1984. That was a good year. =)

Let's be 100% honest here:

Gargoyles was good, but this thread is overblowing it a little bit, isn't it? I can't even remember the names of the main characters, and I doubt many could without Googling. Wasn't one of them a dog, basically?

Any social commentary Gargoyles did was probably covered in spades by X-Men, too, for the matter. It was a neat show for the time, and produced very well, but it's pretty long forgotten for a reason.

It depends on how much you think it's being overblown. Was it the best thing ever? No, definitely not, but it's easily better than some are giving it credit for and it's still better than some of the shows left on the list that's being ignored.

As for the points brought up in the shows favor, I don't think they're overblown at all, that show at points was a lot more sophisticated than most cartoons were doing at the time. That's putting aside the social aspects it touches on. The storytelling was what put it ahead for me.

I wouldn't put it in top 10 or probably even top 15, but I definitely think it deserves to be in over a few more on the list. The only reason it isn't higher is because the third season was completely different in tone and scope and was just bad overall. But the first two seasons are top notch and still hold up.

I'm in the same exact position as you, then. I'm not voting it off this round, but I also don't think it's top 15 either. I just keep seeing a lot of undying support for the show claiming it had some sort of secret sauce writing that absolves it from criticism... and I think it's worth giving Gargoyles a dose of humility.

It really should be coming up on the chopping block
90s South Park too
.

Not defending the show or anything, but off the top of my head - Xanatos, Goliath, Hudson, Bronx, Lexington, Brooklyn. Haven't seen anything from the show in two decades.

Ok, how is it that people are willing to kill the Tick before Doug? That show was ok, that's it. There are shows that have been voted off miles better than Doug. I mean, it's better than the Disney version (which killed what little personality the show had), and episodes with Quailman were alright, but lets face it, the show is about the life of a middle school student, and how he "sees the world" when something goes wrong. Once you get older, watching Doug is just not entertaining.

Adversely, the Tick has ton of personality in every episode that it had. The show was brilliant. It's heroes were goofy and lovable, and so were it's villains. The writing was magnificent. The plots were goofy and timeless. Everything about the Tick was right. There isn't an Episode I hate of this show.

Damn you Jado, you got my birth year >:|

doug is an elementary school student. he's generally unpopular and confused and in a new town where he doesn't know anyone. he has a lot of insecurity and retreats into his mind to deal with his problems.

in that respect, he's someone you might relate to. i don't think it's a fantastic show, but it was unintentionally funny if you viewed doug as a mentally unhealthy person and no one around him was willing to help him deal with his problems. and there were some actual, genuinely good episodes in the mix. the later episodes with patti were pretty good, and doug's lucky hat is just all-around great.

it's a lesser hey arnold, if arnold was super insecure and didn't have a lot of friends.

I used to dislike Doug but found myself missing the Nick version the older I got.

His friendships, his social circle, the music he was into, Patti, it all became cozy in a way. The show's score was really original, and the jokes were intentionally a little dryer, which I can appreciate the older I get. Also, Roger is fackin' funny.

It had few gimmicks, too. I'm not a card carrying fan, but I agree that it's unfair to say it had no character or anything to that effect.

Jeez, when's the page going to turn? I've got an update to List Analysis I want to post!
*grumble grumble*

Further to meta-discussion:
Looking back at the thread, it's amusing how back in the early pages, it averaged about 50 posts per vote. Now, we're doing 150-200 per vote! Now that every show on the list is beloved by someone, we're getting some awesome discussion going.

Let me help you out on that one.

God damn, I have received a couple of PM lobbying for changes of votes already. Y SO SERIOUS :p

Ha. I got one the other day, but by the time I noticed it, the vote was already over anyway. Not that I was going to be influenced by anyone else's agenda other than my own anyway.

I did like new adventures of Johnny Quest and I was young enough to enjoy it when it originally ran. DBZ didn't air here until mid 00s or early 00s (can't recall) so I never found it all that interesting. If I were younger when it first aired then I might have some feelings towards it. Now? I have no love for DBZ, it's just cannon fodder in way of Simpsons and other better shows.

Edit. Didn't know there was 90s Johnny Quest as well. I only saw the remake from the mid 80s.
