Stupid Questions 2 |OT| of questions that don't deserve their own threads, The Sequel

Just got done watching looper last night and I was wondering if anyone else took away from the movie this little tidbit that I was thinking about last night...

Is the kid - when he grows up to be a supervillain - named "The Rainmaker" because he makes it "rain" blood when he kills people? I think it is. Cause that would be awesome...

I've decided I liked this movie for sure as a super hero origin story. Don't know if this was so much a question as it was .... stupid. But i had to get it out there...

the BLOODrain maker. Lawl.

What would the name Reed be in Old Norse (or Norwegian and Swedish)? Also what would it be in German?
It's not used as a name in those regions AFAIK. The name comes from the color red which would be red/röd/rot in Norwegian/Swedish/German. You might have heard of Erik the Red which is "Eiríkr hinn rauði" in Old Norse.

apparently in Portugal the locals can spot tourists from a mile away in the summer months by their wearing shorts. Do Portuguese wear pants in the summertime ?

It's probably more that they're used to working in the heat, wearing uniforms or to dress code. Not a lot of places let you work in shorts.

I don't even know if this is a question, I'm just having this mental image of going to a job interview in regular clothes but with a wrestling mask, like Great Sasuke in Japan. If you got hired while wearing the mask, it would be safe to assume you would work wearing the mask every day, right?

Oh, definitely. You'd have to become that persona.

If it does stem from "red", then Røed might be analogous, and is a surname in Norway today. Do you mean "Reed" like "Elliott Reid" in Scrubs?

Old Norse would probably be Rauð, as Rauði is a grammatical case of the color rauð, since it is of "Erik the red".

I have a stack of old jeans that have ripped over time from wear. Either at the ass or at the balls, so I can't really wear them to work. What should I do with them?

Did they rip at the seams? If there is enough fabric left you can repair them yourself or hand them in to a tailor. Fixing small holes in the crotch region is actually quite easy. Make a small patch from an old pair of jeans and use that together with some jeans colored thread.

Which is correct in terms of comma usage (and why?):

I ate a hotdog, a hamburger, and a slice of pizza.

-or-

I ate a hotdog, a hamburger and a slice of pizza.

I always thought it was the first as it's how I read it. But I've noticed the second one a lot lately, so I wasn't sure which was correct.

I'd imagine so as that's the 'identity' they hired during the interview. If you go in without a mask, they wouldn't know who you are as they didn't interview you, they interviewed a guy wearing a mask and it's the mask they employed. A Muslim woman wearing a burka during an interview and then being hired would be in the same scenario - she could go in to work everyday without ever removing the burka as they employed the person in the burka, not the person without one, although a burka is obviously standard for Muslim women.

Second way. The use of 'and' eliminates the need for a comma.

I'm not an English major, but I find both these examples to be poor.

In the first one, if you were trying to point out the names of the strippers as JFK and Stalin you wouldn't use a comma, you'd use a dash.

We invited the strippers- JFK and Stalin.

Using a comma doesn't suggest any correlation between the two. Are the strippers named JFK and Stalin? Is the sentence adressing two people named JFK and Stalin? Who knows, it's bad setence structure.

In the second example, the "without" example, the intention is still clear because the sentence wouldn't work unless you were stating three different things you had. You'd never say- "I had eggs, toast", or "I had eggs, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich", you'd say "I had eggs and toast" or "I had eggs and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich"

No, fellow poster, weekend_warrior, you wouldn't.

As for the breakfast example, this one is better:

My usual breakfast is coffee, bacon and eggs and toast.

Is it "bacon and eggs" or "eggs and toast"?

This is what I was thinking, that I'd at least use them to teach myself how to sew. I have denim string and needles, but I've never sewn anything before.

If the alternative is to throw them away then you might as well practice sewing first. It's a lot easier if you use a sewing machine. An easy way to repair crotch damage is to put a jeans patch on the inside of the tear, make stitches in a circle surrounding the hole (this method won't interfere that much with movement if you have a tight fit), you should also reinforce the stitches by making a sun-beam pattern. Give it a try and see how it works.

I'm not into comic books, but I like a lot of their characters and themes. The reason I don't read them, though, is because I feel like no plot points ever matter. If someone dies or is paralyzed or disappears or whatever, it could all just be undone next year. When there's no tension, I don't feel like reading. So how do comic book fans stay interested? Is the main attraction the drawings?

What's the best way to go about selling jackets and coats without getting ripped off by taking them to a used clothing store and getting 10% of what they'll sell them for? Craigslist? Ebay? Clothing/fashion forums?

This is one of the reasons why I began reading manga. Stories have a beginning and usually a conclusion, unless the story is drawn out or ends due to lack of sales. They're also written by one writer and artist afaik.

But I think fans stay interested in US comics because they're invested in particular arcs/writers/artists. It's almost like how viewers are attached to long running soap operas or wrestling eras. One generation of readers may read Jim Lee's X-Men, but leave when Andy Kubert starts. Another generation may only stick around for Chris Claremont's arcs, and only casually read Scott Lobdell until Claremont returns. Then there are a few who just like the franchises and go wherever the new teams take the characters, until they can't take it anymore.

I have a question...
in this Window's 8 commercial

What is the name of that Dell "Lightweight All in One" computer shown? I'd like a new drawing tablet/pc and the screen looks pretty big (oh so sexy).

Edit: Nevermind, found it. Dell XPS 18 Touch. Touchscreen is suspect.

I would guess an online site like Ebay if you're patient. I never had experience selling clothes on Craigslist though.

So the ending of Fringe.

What happens to
Walter Bishop? Is he erased from the timeline at the exact moment that everything gets reset to Peter and Olivia at the park and the observers do not appear? And he existed before in that timeline right up til that moment though, so everyone will still remember him? And so basically season 5 didn't happen now (or could they find memories of this in the isolation tank, lol)?

hello.

so recently on many websites (including gaf), seemingly random words are highlighted in blue and double underlined. when i hover over them i get a popup saying TAKE A SURVEY ABOUT _______, whatever the word is.

i'm guessing this is some kind of virus/spambot/shitbot whatever ..

ran a scan with my free AVG security thing, it says no errors or anything bad was found. what do i do?

It's malware, check in programs and features for programs running that you didn't install.

My laptop won't read one of my SD cards (it's the one I use in my 3DS and the 3DS reads it fine), but since it's a micro SD card, am I correct in I should buy a new microSD to SD adapter to see if it will fix it???

Am I wrong in thinking that the order of operations in mathematics differ between countries? I was thinking about those math quizes on facebook where people argue about what the right answer is because they've learned different rules for when to calculate parentheses etc. It seems like bedmas or different acronyms aren't taught everywhere, but math is supposed to be universal, right? :)

It's taught as different acronyms but they all follow bodmas or bedmas which are the same thing. When I was taught, they were used interchangeably.

Brackets, orders, division, multiplication, addition and subtraction is the correct order

So the online arguments are just based on ignorance then, go figure xD And here I am, dead certain that different schools teach different things, derp.

Yeah there is only one correct answer for equations and sums following the order of operations, the only difference is exponents in the acronym of BEDMAS replacing Order in BODMAS.

You stop thinking about death as a super-important theme and start thinking of them as parts of a story. Some writers use this to their advantage their runs - take for example Johnny Storm's death, or Peter Parker's. Hickman and Slott (respectively) killed off characters in their runs, then brought (well, so far just Hickman - Slott's is coming later) the characters back. It's a part of storytelling that can really lend to the story, and the understanding of the character.

Then there's the fact that more often than not, different writers are trying to tell different stories. So you'll have some degree of continuity, sure, but you'll also get to see how different writers will take on the same characters. Or maybe restructure the supporting cast (who often can die permanently). Look at the difference between Hickman's Avengers/New Avengers combo and Bendis's. Completely different types of storytelling.

I dunno - I enjoy all of that. It really just requires a different frame of mind in some cases.

Is there a nice summary somewhere of Lost that includes all major things from the first 4 seasons? Reading all of the episode summaries on Wikipedia is too much, I just need the headlines. I want to pick up where I left off, but it's been a very long time. If I just start googling myself, I'm afraid I'll run into unwanted spoilers.

Did anyone else's chrome stop showing the full link in the bottom left corner of the screen when you hover over another link on a webpage? It was helpful for when people post links without saying if its youtube, text, or whatever else.

Chromebook help please.

I have a 13 month old Samsung Chromebook. We just moved and had no issue with wireless connection at the new place for a week than suddenly it can't connect to my home WiFi. No issues with other devices on the WiFi. The error message I get is "out of range" then it prompts me for my password even though I have full bars and have confirmed I have the correct password.

The weirdness.

I was on tech support with Samsung and they had me do a complete reboot wiping the system. A power wash then a recovery. I had to do the paperclip in the hole in the back to go into recovery but it appeared to brick my computer. No power on anything until I plugged the Chromebook in (still had half battery life) and suddenly the computer was fine and low and behold I'm on my WiFi no problem. I assume the reboot fixed my problem and everything is cool but next time I turn on the computer I'm right back where I was not connecting to WiFi and when I try to simulate the reboot process I can't get it to work again.

Any ideas? I dread calling Century Link with this one since it's clearly a stupid question.
