Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Yeah, Helix 3D mod has working UI scaling. I've never touched Helix though so I have no idea how it works.

Got it working. Fairly simple unpack in DATA folder affair. Does scale down quite a bit, haven't checked if there are any opacity options but you can toggle the elements on and off (which I made a right pigs ear of playing like that as the lock on reticule goes as well).

Sounds good.
Bookmarked, in case I end up playing it again.

So, can anyone tell me why this is happening?

Could you give some details on the

?

Someone else may have the same problem and it's useful to have a solution available if they do.

My apologies for not coming back with my findings, sorry :(

I realised that while I was forcing windowed mode in the ini file, tucked away the game itself was a mode for 'fullscreen or window' and because it was set to fullscreen there, the game was for whatever reason, spazzing out.

So I switched it in game to no fullscreen and then everything seemed hunky dorey

Since the OT seems to be dead i´ll ask it here: Some invader came into my game dropped me a demon spear and then killed me. This weapon is incredible and it made the bell gargoyles very, very easy to kill. Should i keep it or would it ruin my game? I even killed one of the knights who would kill me before in a single blow.

It's really overpowered for the next few areas you will be in, but then it will even out. Up to you. OT's not dead!

You have to use something like widescreen fixer to force it, but widescreenfixer hasn't been updated with the latest patch and it crashes the game when trying to use it.

Anyone else using Windows 8.1 and windowed mode together? Because it doesn't work at all for me.

Windowed mode works fine if I remove DSFix, but if I use windowed mode in conjunction with DSFix (with or without the borderless option activated) the game "freezes" here upon launch:

I say "freezes" because it's only the video that freezes; I can still move through menus and hear the sound but that screen never changes.

I have tried disabling the intro skip and texture override, as well as radeonpro and shadowplay but those things don't stop it from freezing just as the menu loads. I've also had DEP turned off for Dark Souls for months now.

The game runs fine in fullscreen mode but I would really like to use borderless windowed mode.

You have to find the updated plugin file. It's somewhere on the widescreen forum.

I managed to fix this problem! I did some searching around and found someone with the exact same problem on the Steam forums and the thread there also contained a fix that worked for multiple people.

It seems that the culprit was the title screen animation video. All I had to do was rename that file and now Dark Souls launches perfectly fine in all configurations I've tried.

So, I decided to have a replay of Dark Souls, and said I'd write some shaders specifically for it.

Seeing as I've already spent far more time than I'd originally intended to on this, I thought I may as well share it, with any who may like to use it. I figured here would be the best place to do so, seeing as DS on PC would hardly be enjoyed at all, if not for Durante's excellent DSFix.

Current effects include:

  • UHQ FXAA
  • High Quality Blended Bloom
  • Scene Tonemapping
  • RGB Colour Correction
  • Post Linear Gamma Correction
  • S-Curve Contrast Enhancement
  • Texture Sharpening
  • Pixel Vibrance Adjustment
I'm betting you're looking right now saying "ugh, FXAA? what is this hobo anti aliasing?, we have SMAA \o/". This FXAA implementation happens to be higher quality than the general SMAA available via injectors. With similar, or lower performance impact. It also has a double pass option, for those who want extremely high quality.

This pack also includes an updated version of VSSAO2 for DSFix.

To Install:
Extract DSFx_ShaderSuite_v1.00.zip to your \Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition\DATA root folder (where DATA.exe is) The shader options are all in an ini file named 'DSFx_Settings.ini' So , you shouldn't have to go near the actual fx fle. unless you want to, of course.

To Edit Settings:
Open DSFx_Settings.ini in a text editor. I recommend Notepad++, or the like. It'll probably look pretty messy if you use regular notepad to view/edit it. You can enable, disable, and customize various options for each effect. There are plenty of options to play around with. Settings are clearly sectioned, and labeled. Use the documentation comments for instructions on each option

I wrote the effects to work with Dark Souls via the great injector, eFX. This injector is not my work. It was created by Crosire.

Some screens below. There are a few more in the 'Screenshots Folder' in the SkyDrive link below for the archive. You're better off viewing original in full screen, if you want a somewhat decent comparison.

Shaders Off
Shaders Enabled - Default Settings
Cinematic Tonemapping Enabled
Shaders Off 2
Shaders Enabled 2

If you want to view the full quality screens, right-click the image once it loads up, and select 'view original'.

Constructive feedback is helpful. Enjoy. This typically isn't for those with systems that can barely handle Dark Souls as it is, unfortunately.

My system;
i7 3770k @ 4.4
GTX 680
8GB 2133 CL9

Just installed this and it looks incredible at first glance. Colors are brighter and the FXAA solution really does seem to have made a difference at 1440p with no downsampling.

Started playing again and i reinstalled, with the DSfix 22. Looks good but i'm getting some artifacting?

It takes the form of a translucent line running horizontally across the full width of the screen and moves from the bottom of the screen to the top.

Any known fix for this?

I have:

The most common cause of this seems to be forgetting to extract the dsfix folder to the data folder. Can you confirm if it's there or not?

Yeah, folder is there as well. I just threw the zip in the directory and unpacked everything there. Folder is there along with everything else.

Oddly enough, I just tried to start the game outside of steam by opening the executable and the game worked that way. Except it told me I wasn't connected and couldn't save my progress...with no way to connect?

Edit: That only worked once, game crashes now also if I boot it from the executable.

But either way, I'd rather launch the game from Steam.

Edit: Or are you saying I need to put the contents from that folder into the DATA folder? As in take it all out of there and put it in data, or is having the dsfix folder in there enough?

No, it sounds like the files are where they need to be.

Have you changed any of the settings in dsfix.ini? IIRC, setting UnlockFPS 1 can cause crashes if Windows' Data Execution Prevention is enabled.

If that's not the case try renaming DINPUT8.dll to something else, just to confirm that the game runs without dsfix.

Edit: Also are you running Windows 8? I seems to recall some posters having issues.

Renamed DINPUT8.dll to sDINPUT8 and still crashes. So not the fix that's causing it then eh?

Edit: Yeah, I'm on 8.1

Hey all. Just updated to dsfix version 22, and I'm apparently unable to use my wired XBox 360 controller now. Any idea what gives? It looks like the last version of dsfix I was using was 19, so I'm assuming that whatever is causing the problem changed between versions 19 and 22.

I've already tried a few recommendations from the Steam forums, including disabling the HID-compliant game controller items under the Device Manager. I would have tried disabling dsmfix.dll, as some suggested, but it appears to already be disabled. EDIT: For fun, also tried downloading dsmfix and *enabling* it. That didn't do anything, either. The controller works fine with other games.

EDIT the second: Disabled dsfix entirely, controller still not working. Something's wonky with Dark Souls proper, I guess. Going to check my drivers and reboot to see if that helps.

EDIT the third: looks like my Razor Hydra was interfering in some way. Unplugged it and everything started working nicely again.

I'm experiencing a slightly strange issue with stuttering after about 1-2 hours of play. Basically the game plays fine (unlocked framerate capped at 30fps) but after a seemingly random amount of time I start to get minor input lag and micro-stuttering. Anyone else experience this at all? I'm using Win 7 x64 if that's important?

I'm havint the same issue on Windows 7; i extracted the files on the Data folder and as soon as i launch the game, it crashes. I think i will try the same steps even for the fix on Win8.

Maybe its because you re playing in Blighttown or somewhere where the framerate usually drops. Anyway have you try playing in windowed mode or borderless mode ? It fixed the slowdowns i had.

Just a guess. Remove the files and do this.

Thanks, i'll give borderless mode a shot. Is there any way of getting a non 16:9 resolution is windowed mode? I ask only because I currently have to manually switch to 1680x945 before starting the game, otherwise it all gets stretched out...

Hi, I was redirected here from the dark souls OT with my query:

So I turned down all the graphics settings in DSFix to low/off when I was in Blight town because for some reason that place killed my FPS.

So I figure I should change them back since that was ages ago, most settings are pretty self explanatory (aa etc) but I'm not exactly sure what settings I need to change for these:

Which setting do I change so I can actually see the wall instead of just black? (it's not a brightness or gamma thing).

Also what setting is this that makes the character get super blurry up close when it's fine when the camera is just like 1 foot further.
Cheers.

Best fix for Blighttown is to unlock FPS in DSFix and cap the FPS at 30. For some reason the standard cap drops FPS to 15 in crowded areas.

That images maked me lol so hard. But, i actually turned off AA even before putting the DSfix files for the first time. I removed the DSfix and the game works fine. Gotta find what could be.

First troubleshooting steps are usually to disable the framerate unlock and intro skip in DSFix.

I installed this for the first time a few nights ago. It looks so amazing compared to my 360 play of the game. I can see further, stuff isn't all jagged, and I don't have bad frame rate drops all the time.

I'm interested in finding out about the fix for this myself as well. I have the same issue and it pops up just about everywhere. In all honesty I just thought it was supposed to be like that, until I saw a video that could actually look a lot further and wasn't as dark. It's one of the reasons I wasn't able to find where the blacksmith was hiding in catacombs :(

Maybe it's just the PC version that's dark, but I'd love to find out.

Seems like it might be a problem with DoF. What are your settings for that?

A bit off topic, but awhile ago I was messing around with DSfix on Halo 2 Vista again and the FPS unlocker works on that as well (120FPS Halo 2 is godlike)

Does this work on any other games as well that have their FPS locked?

Depth of Field settings said:
# Depth of Field resolution override, possible values:

# 540 = DoF pyramid starts at 960x540

# 1080 = DoF pyramid starts at 1920x1080
# 2160 = DoF pyramid starts at 3840x2160

dofOverrideResolution 810

# 0 = DoF scaling enabled (default, recommended)

# o (off) at default DoF resolution
# 0 or 1 at 540 DoF resolution
# 1 or 2 above that
# 3 or 4 at 2160 DoF resolution (if you're running a 680+)
dofBlurAmount 2

This is with a resolution of 1920x1080.

You could either increase the dofOverrideResolution or decrease the dofBlurAmount. Or both.

I just set dofOverrideResolution to the max and dofBlurAmount to the lowest setting, but can't test it yet. Currently wandering in stupid Blighttown (uggh, I only just got there and I already hate the amount of stupid poison creatures there.. especially those poison dart dudes) and I don't have time to check the old places sadly. As soon as I get a chance, I'll test the new settings in the familiar places.

In other news, since I changed to borderless fullscreen mode (I totally missed the borderless option before) the game is running super smooth for me as well. Before that there were a few random, totally weird, FPS spikes but I haven't had them since. So great tip guys!
