Final Fantasy IX remake “in trouble & possibly cancelled” - NateTheHate

For developers, it's certainly not just about attracting old fans, but also about farming new ones to familiarize them with the series.
They can't make anything worth playing anymore, which is why we have remakes of old games. Square is garbage and has been for a decade, with the exception of some of their smaller studios.

That's true, too. Recent projects attempting to adapt to the new "action" generation have failed. Which is why they're now forced to make remakes that appeal to both old and new fans.

I just want to point out that the genre (as you probably know) is still very popular. They lost too much great talent and nowadays, Monolith is what Square used to be with AAA.

To be fair, wasn't the last Dragon Quest a great game? I am planning on playing it up once I get my hands on a Switch 2.

This rumour was never real in the first place as their teams were always tied up making other games.

Considering that this was part of the Nvidia leak list of unannounced games - the overwhelming majority of which were later announced, including several Square Enix projects - it seems more likely that the project did exist in some form. Possible that it was later scrapped, or that it may yet be announced.

Square Enix: Try to make a remake of FFIX for 4 years, fail and cancel the project

Sandfall Interactive: Form a tiny team of 32 people most of which never made a game before except the 3 founders who left Ubisoft, find a 25 years old amateur composer on Soundcloud, recruit a random from Reddit to write the script, grind it out for 5 years, and make the best RPG in many people's living memory

Why is Square Enix so shit?
Expedition 33 was made by over 300 people.

I've pointed out many times how that was fake.
Most of it was known at the time, many releases that weren't known coincidentally didn't make the list, some were guesses, this was confirmed by NVIDIA.

I beg to differ, most of that was definitely 'not known'. Some things were tangentially understood like FF7 Remake coming to PC etc but there were brand new things that were never announced in it, things that were code-name level at that time even.

It's worth revisiting the whole list again, obviously not every single thing in it came out, some codenames probably got canned along the way, so many projects do. But the vast majority of it turned out to be true.

Try find any new IP that wasn't known at the time, eg. Clair Obscur, you won't find it because it wasn't known and couldn't be guessed.

Contraband and Avowed are there, both new IP's. But, not sure why that has to be the only criteria.

Games like Kingdom Hearts IV, Chrono Cross remaster etc were announced long after this list leaked.

This has been *the* most prophetic gaming leak in our lifetime, there's just no other way to put it.

Those were already known.
That criteria is important as it easily points out how fake/misunderstood that list was.

If it were real it would have everything that was in development.

I already gave you examples, there were multiple new IP's in there.

Also, just to belabor the point some more, the Nvidia leak was in 2021, KH4 and Cross remaster were announced in 2022. They were in no way 'already known'.

Similarly, it listed a bunch of Sony's games coming to PC long before Sony's formal pivot to start releasing marquee stuff on PC. They started with games like Spider Man and the Uncharted collection in late 2022.

None of this was "already known" at the time of the leaks.

My favourite is that the list doesn't have Portal RTX, which NVIDIA developed themselves but does have Half Life 2 Remastered which not only hasn't been released or announced (despite the reddit post saying otherwise), but the closest to it is a mod that started development 2 years after the leak.

Worst Final Fantasy.

The Sony pivot was already announced and were games many had already guessed. (Which they didn't know everything either)

I was seeking examples of new IP, and not sequels eg. KH.4, which was already expected.

Also keep in mind this same rumour also had a number of Nintendo titles coming to PC among other things, like expecting Star Citizen to release a year or two after the rumour LOL!

Many will not be replaying it. Many will be playing it for the first time. Their is always a new generation of gamers and they do not want to see PS1 graphics.

Yeah. The screenshots I've seen of the existing version on modern TVs looks bad. The lowres backgrounds clash badly with the low poly models.

But all that's really needed is to just fix that and add voice acting.

Leaks are a double edged sword. They really give you false hopes on unannounced things, whether negative or positive.

Or they can turn it into something they always envisioned in their minds, no longer hampered by the graphics tech of that era.

FFIX Remake is real lol. If they haven't come out and outright denied it (which Square would actually do). then it's definitely something that were working on. Now, whether it's been cancelled, I've heard things, but no definitive "it's been cancelled", just reshuffled. If they're still planning on releasing, they're going to wait until a big show like TGS, Gamescon, or The Game Awards. They're not going to just announce it on YouTube out of nowhere. They're going to want an audience and a show to make a bigger splash.

No they weren't, why say something like that that can be easily verified.

SM Remastered and Uncharted for PC weren't announced before June and September of 2022 respectively. The leaks preceded those announcements by almost a full calendar year.

I don't care if this is a FFTactics level remaster. I just want this gem on modern consoles.

I see you people talk about how you hated FFIX and I get it. I do. At first, coming from the AWESOME FFVII and VIII, IX was a huge letdown. It had a whole different feeling from the ultrarealistic last two games. It felt like I was playing with tinker toys in a fantasy kingdom. My damage felt low and limited. The gameplay felt limited(at first, remember this was coming off FFVIII which had some very complex systems right out of the gate). The chibi animal characters were offputting and strange. The combat was very limiting. This was not the game I expected from Final Fantasy.

Eventually X and XII came out and I absolutely loved both of those games and so I went back and retried IX.

Let me tell you that with the correct perspective, IX is an amazing game in its own right. You just need to go in with an open mind. The game will grip you. The gameplay is tight and balanced. The minigames are there. The story isn't bad and has some very memorable set pieces. The min/max end game is solid and very enjoyable. The theme is very different than any other game I've played and feels more at home in a board game with a toy knight, a toy thief, a toy princess playing on a chess board...but it was brought to life in a way that is the total package. It is really so self enclosed and perfect in its own way and there has rarely been anything exactly like it. FFIX has earned its place in the pantheon and I personally would love to see anything Square has to show for it. There is also some room for QOL changes here so a remake could absolutely make this game a true banger.

The game is available on all modern platforms already.

Why would you disfigure Xenogears like this?
I think the HD2D games of late look great. Gives the proper visual polishing without messing with the original pixel art style.
I think we can all agree that we do NOT need a full-fledged remake of Xenogears, a la FF7Remake, or the modernized FFTactics redrawn sprites. It's the only safe and acceptable way to bring it back other than dumping the ROM via emulation.
Monolithsoft needs to stay as far away as possible from touching that gem.

Also probably after FF Tactics is out.

Enough with this lie.
They did not make a game with 30 people ffs.
In this 30 people they don't have a single gameplay or cinematic animator. It was not a team of juniors. Making that game does not take 33 juniors with 3 leads. They benefit from the narrative but it is bullshit. They don't count any freelancer, codev or outsourcer.

Isn't that what the HD port already did? I agree, we don't need remakes of everything, more than enough classics are good enough with decent emulation and a few minor QOL tweaks.

The officially released "HD" version is shit. Very barebones.

If you want IX revisited with an actual modern effort, look up the Moguri mod.

Sony announced intent to port its games to PC long before the NVIDIA rumour.

The first port was announced in March 2020, more than a year before the fake NVIDIA rumours.
