Return to Silent Hill Movie Reviews - Generally Unfavorable

Shocked Patrick Stewart GIF

I got free tickets to this movie and I still decided against going to watch it lol

Only in cinemas for four days and each day only had one session at 9pm.

I'll waiting until it's streaming.

The first movie was okay. The second was an abortion. This one looks worse so not surprised. Wish they'd just leave the IP alone tbh
I liked Silent Hill 3; I enjoyed its 3D effect... Maybe because I consider the third installment to be the best in the franchise.

just got out of the cinema

fuck it was bad. How the fucked this shit up I dont know
also the soundtrack is straight TRASH

TRASH!!!!!

Why the fuck could they not just use the OST from the game ? FML

They need to bring in the big guns for these game to movie-adaptions.
Like Alex Garland for the Elden Ring movie.

I would have LOVED to see a silent hill movie by Demian Rugna!

It seems to have been well-received in Mexico... Well, I couldn't care less what Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes, Roger Ebert, or YouTubers think... I'll see it this weekend.

Not sure how his opinion is received around here but Angry Joe thought it was ok. Not quite as good as the first one ( which he thought was ok) but much better then the second, but it was not a glowing endorsement:

I mean they used music from the games in the first movie and it do any good. Just took you out of it by having songs that didn't match what was going on at all.

I don't believe anything that YouTuber says; he's always been an arrogant, starving beggar.

Going by my daughter's review IGN gave them some pity points. Sounds dreadful. Too bad, I wanted to watch it.

They used the plot from one of the best Silent Hill games to exist and they come out with one of the worst movies in the series. That's pathetic. I saved some money by not having to go the theater.

Hollywood gets stupid and so are their writers. They used songs from the SH2 OST in the first film. They're all kinds of stupid.

I knew it was gonna be shit when I saw that wig. The recipe for success was right there, but they fumbled hard.
Also the blame can't really go to Gans, it also has to go to the screenwriters.

Someone on Reddit said that the Silent Hill HD collection is now the 2nd worst way to experience Silent Hill 2 lol.

Laura & Angela are now fragments of Mary lol. Apparently Abstract Daddy has Mary's head at some point. Pyramid Head screams for some reason? Maria is killed by Pyramid head as usual, but then never appears again. The cult is involved and that's why Mary is sick cause she's the head of the cults daughter and they drugged her making her sick. She also asks for James to kill her. Ending is in water, but Gans decides to introduce the loop theory in a ham fisted way

Did they use Chatgpt to write the story?

About the spoilers

Not gonna lie, Mary being the head of the cult's daughter and thats why she is sick is kind of a great way to tie this story with the first game's story. But it also makes things too convoluted. And SH 2 should be about Mary and James first and foremost, not "the bigger picture". Everything else ... I'm kinda okay with it? Sounds like some purist complaints

I'm mostly worried about the non SH related stuff, like: CGI, acting, cinematography, dialogue etc.

I'll give it a shot

It must suck to be a director and release a movie you are proud of then have the critics just say its silly horseshit and it has like a 4 percent on rotten tomatoes lol
Directors often say things like releasing a movie into the world is like having a child.

Imagine proudly showing people pictures of your baby, and they go "looks like my toilet after a drunken night of Taco Bell lmfaaaaaaooooo"

It was for reasons I'll never understand.
I remember the very bad reviews, ironically the reviewers was saying they didn't expect much "given the source material" yet praise everything that was actually lifted from the games, even pointing out that people laugh in the viewing because Rose walked into a classroom table.... watching this scene for myself, it looks like a natural, realistic stumble when turning around in a rush, but for some reason this was criticised and made fun of, don't get me wrong the film does have problems which I mentioned in a bit
Better than this? Yes, absolutely
I do actually think the original is a decent film with some glaring problems
The whole ending is shit, they simplified it with with explanations.
And there was waaayy to many people living in Silent Hill, I understand they was pushing the Occult theme from the original but they didn't need a whole village of them.
The acting was another thing, it dips between decent and Sci-fi TV show quality, and the script wasn't very good.
But it's still a decent film I think is worth watching if you're a fan of the game or this time of horror, it's a got a lot good stuff but it's been put together wrong and could do without a few scenes and Hollywood ideas.
Are you meaning the original SH movie, or the game Silent Hill 2?
The Film

Now if I was the director/writer
I would have made SH2 a direct sequel to first film and got back Sean Bean as the main character (the films version of James) looking for his wife( Rose) who he is still haunted by and is convinced she is still there.
So it would be similar to SH2 but different, with a ending that changes what you know about the first film and (explains why Pyramid Head was in the first film too)
It definitely could be better.

still angry how bad this was man. Absolute fucking trash

Mary isn't even James' wife in the film. She didnt have cancer... she was killed by another character, in the film. I wont spoil more than that obviously but fuck, if you give a shit about spoilers on a movie this bad you are cooked.

They completely changed everything and it's unfathomable. None of the characters are like their game form, no backstory for any of them whatsoever, big changes for 'reasons'

literally makes no fucking sense.. and for some reason they have Mary getting eaten by a random bunch of cult members in the sewers? the fuck is going on in hollywood man.

They made this big song and dance about how fans of the game would love this, its faithful blabla, absolutely fucking cappin ass niggas, fuck them and everybody that love em.

0/10

this is the single worse peice of silent hill media i have consumed. even worse than ascension and book of memories. SH2 is good enough for an HBO series! wtf were they thinking when they came out with this bullshit

The OG movie was praised for it's production desing/art direction and that's about it.

Silent Hill has always struck me as very David Lynch / Cronenberg-esque.

This song make me think about this SH song

The crude reality is that Silent Hill, at its peak, will always be niche. Too bad that, at this point, the franchise has more bad-mid media than great.

I already saw it... And unfortunately, this adaptation was a bad movie. The inclusion of the characters was just a novelty. The plot is confusing. I've played the original, and I understood the remake, but other audiences wouldn't. The scenes could have been much better, and I fell asleep three times. There were no action scenes, no boss fights, and I was expecting Eddie's showdown, but it didn't happen either. The ending could have been better. If I were to consider it a reinterpretation, I'd give it a 6 If I were to rate it as an adaptation, I'd give it a 5.

And I really want to see the director's effort in adapting the video game, which is complex in its entirety. But yes... It's sadly the worst of the three.

Are we pretending the original was well received?
Yeah, it certainly wasn't winning any awards, but it was a LOT better than Revelations for a lot of reasons. Better than Return to Silent Hill as well. For the longest I thought it was one of the best video game films. But it was far from perfect, haha.

It would have been better make original SH story takes place in Silent Hill.
Agreed. Basically like the new Resident Evil movie coming out that will likely be the best one yet, at least I'd assume. Cregger has made some pretty solid films. Knowing this is how the "Silent Hill 2 adaptation" panned out, I would've MUCH rather have had an original idea. Now we've just seen bastardizations of the first three games, might as well do 4 at this point too, lol.

It's reason why good adaptation like Cyberpunk Edgerunner worked. It gives creator the freedom to make the story they want while expanding the world of the IP they adapting.

Isn't SH4 weirdly convoluted?
I mainly mean the concept of a guy being trapped in his apartment where something is deeply wrong with it, and whenever he leaves it he's in "hell".

That sounds like an easy horror movie to accomplish.

As long as they don't go too overboard with the rest, it could work.

This is one of the reasons why I liked the original Paul W.S. Anderson Resident Evil movie so much. It could fit within the lore and everyone but one person in it ends up dead. What they did afterwards is what screwed up continuity and upset R.E. fans.

I still like RE: Extinction though.

The movie was pretty bad but since I haven't played any silent hill games I didn't know how accurate it was to the games. I really hated the main character. Although understanding some of the main character's history it does make sense a lot of his actions. I think the movie looked okay with the the cg most of the time. The movie was just weird. I'd probably rate it like a C+. Visually good/they did the best they could with the budget, music can't even remember any, story is all over the place, didn't like the main character, liked the other characters but they could have been better, and tons of stupid decisions in the movie.
