‘Fantastic Four’ Reboot Will Aim For Tone of Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’

I'm not sure why this is such a surprise for people. Have you watched his previous film Chronicle? That was a VERY realistic take on the superhero origin story.

“Josh Trank’s instincts are to be as realistic and grounded and real with this stuff as possible.
Exactly what NOT to do with works focusing on characters with supernatural powers.

No one remembers what happens in them.

All I remember was that Ben's former girlfriend got out of her house in sleepwear to see him (before she knew of the transformation), always stuck me as weird a woman would just got out of her (urban) house almost naked.

Typical NeoGAF overreaction. Josh Tank is a very capable director and if the film is anywhere as good as Chronicle then it will probably turn out to be one of the best superhero films. The Ultimate fantasic four origin story was pretty grounded in the context and if they are basing the film from that then it should turn out okay.

Just looking at origin stories, the Ultimate FF is not grounded. It's a story of a super-scientist kid who can transport toys to another dimension as a pre-teen, with a slightly-sabotaged version of that experiment giving them their powers at 21.

The original FF origin just involved cosmic radiation on a spacecraft that had inadequate shielding.

The ultimate's origin gives them a younger cast, not a more grounded story.

I feel like we're just casting aspirations based on what we assume "realistic" means as opposed to anything the statement actually implies or says.

Not really anything to get upset about atm.

The tone of the Raimi Movies at least 1 and 3 are sad, while Two is the only one with a Happy tone.

Spider-Man 1 had Spidey wrestling Macho Man Randy Savage, Macy Gray, Jonah being Jonah, and just general Spider-Man hero moments. All happy, adventurous stuff.

A movie doesn't have to pick just one tone. They can dip in and out based on the drama and story its trying to tell.

Not everything needs to be super gritty so i am down with it.

Besides, the tone is SP1 and SP2 were amazing in the sense that it nailed the Spider-Man that i grew up loving and they were comic book ass comic book movies. So, if they are going for THAT tone i say bring it.

I don't remember this at all.

I would say that this is a time for a rewatch, but nah.

Andrea from the walking dead is a weird woman indeed.

I thought we all agreed that grounding comic book movies was a bad idea? Only 1 series has done that successfully.

And Batman is wildly different from Fantastic Four tonally.

That being said, "realistic" is just a word... we'll have to see how that translates into the movie.

Why is everyone focusing on Reed here?

Considering who was hired first and his history with the director, as well as his stature in Hollywood - this is more than likely going to be a Johnny-centric movie.

Reed might still be the leader of the team, but I'm willing to bet the focus of the movie is Johnny.

That would be great since I can't stand Miles Teller.

Of all the comic book properties of course Fox decides that the Fantastic Four are the ones that needed grounding in reality.

Reed Richards is ridiculous. Dude has better prep than Batman. Can tank hits from the likes of Namor/Thing. Can dodge weapon fire/energy blasts almost as well as Apocalypse. He once tricked the Black Celestial into killing itself (after it had driven Galactus insane), he's since created weapons that can outright kill the average Celestial. The entire Skrull race considers him the most dangerous thing on Earth. And most impressively hes likely the only mortal Galactus has sought for advice on multiple occasions.

The only reason Reed hasn't completely subjugated the Earth is because he has a family keeping his humanity in check, and even then he's come perilously close to going off the deep end much like his counterparts. Seriously, 616 Reed is one bad day away from being no better than his friggen Nazi alternate universe version. Do not fuck with Reed Richards.

You seem like you can recommend some good Fantastic Four comics.

Realistic/grounded does not fit with Raimi's Spiderman. At all. There's not much of anything grounded or realistic in those movies.

Please, go balls-of-the-walls with it. It's crazy concept, EMBRACE IT! Look at GotG, it's embracing its crazy concept & it's looking great.

Spider-Man has light moments and moments of high adventure but it's over all tone is Sad.
Fights his best friends father to the death. His best friend hates the superhero persona for it. Uncle Ben dies. He realizes his relationships are going to disintegrate.

That doesn't negate what I said though. The movie dips between tones based on what it's trying to do at any given moment. To say it's just "sad" ignores all the times it isn't - which you can't because of a lot of those "happy" moments are important for the development of Peter's character and thus are more than just throwaway moments of comic relief. Same with just calling it "happy."

Wow.. does anyone like Reed? Dude seems like a dick. A respectable mega genius dick, but still. Lol.

Reed is the ultimate dick in comic books. No one actually "likes" him as far as I know. But they do like seeing how big of a dick he can be and yet he still gets away with it.
