“Xbox Fans Are Paid”, Says Former World of Warcraft Designer

Of course it happens but not on websites like this. They are macro operations runnig on platforms like twitter.

Microsoft would be very stupid to pay for shills here given that many people are actual rabid fans and do it for free.

I like rabid fans, they keep the conversations going and make browsing gaf fun and usually funny.

This applies for any console/brand/game.
oh it definitely happens here, we even had someone busted just recently

... so, a 23-year-old internal memo combined with the word "evangelise" used in the context of a the xCloud service and we're at "Phil Spencer ADMITS he's PAYING for XBOX FANS!". You're promoting your own thread more than anyone is promoting xCloud, so what is Microsoft paying for, exactly?

No one is saying, "Phil admits he's paying for Xbox fans." Stop making stories in your head.

This you?
We have evidence that Microsoft hires people for their "evangelizing teams." And Phil Spencer also wanted to use "evangelizers" to promote xCloud...
I imagine you'll reply with a version of "I never said the exact words: 'Phil admits he's paying for Xbox fans.'". This is because you're actively promoting a narrative while trying to keep your hands clean. The irony of this in context is so dense that Matthew McConaughey could use it to fucking time travel.

How does any of this really differ from all the press kits and treatment influencers get. Like being flown around the world for final fantasy events on the 11th June and being given huge god of war hammers, ps5s, xboxs starfield will have a huge press kit.

Is this not all the same?
I don't really see how hiring dudes to throw glitter over your product on forums is the same as press kit's, no

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Yes, it is the same strategy to some extent.
The only difference is that MS was caught using a guide.
I think the issue in this case is that we have all seen at some point a completely obsessed MS fan to a level that is not seen in any other company. So personally, I think MS's strategy goes further. Are you familiar with the now-defunct YouTube channel "Xbox Mil grau"?

Microsoft's strategy doesn't only involve payments, but intentionally creating a context where fans become disciples who will spread the company's message, defend it against its "enemies," and believe that the only rational choice is to purchase their products. Psychological warfare.

I have to admit. I love when a smug poster like him gets burned like this.

"Phil wanted to use evangelizes to promote xCloud" =/= "Phil admits he is paying for Xbox fans"

The first one came from Phil's own emails presented in court.

I don't think it's impossible, but If they really pay people, why are there no e-mails, messages, bank statement or whatsoever to prove it?

If a company would offer me to get paid for posting fake shit, the first thing i would do is trying to sell that offer to the media and i bet there are tons of attention whores out there that would instantly publish it for free on social media.

I also think with all those leaked emails lately chances should be high this got leaked as well.

People that get hired for that stuff doesn't really give a shit. If people don't come forward when it happens related to politics and more important stuff, they certainly won't for video games (they have NDAs in place too).

How about if I tell you I shared receipts with Mod of War: Remastered Mod of War: Remastered that specifically says Xbox is giving "an army" of people free consoles, storage disks and Gamepass just to influence positive affinity and they went after certain tech review websites giving them exclusive articles because they felt they were anti Xbox and wanted to sway them to be pro Xbox and this comes from the guy at the time who was right below Phil

Does that count?

If you do that, he would likely lash out at you, accuse you of something weird, and deflect by saying "well, all companies do that."

Not doubting your credibility or anything but saying that 'companies pay influencers' is like saying 'water makes you wet'.

Very true but from my conversations I feel its slightly different when you target sites that I wouldn't consider an influencer and basically try to pay them enough money to make them like you more

And I am sure other companies do it as well

You shouldn't even need to do that. Florian Mueller was posting here under a different alias and we've had several instances where posters have been regurgitating xbox PR/marketing word for word before it even hits public channels. Nevermind the fact that so many of them that behave a particular way seem to have a never ending revolving door of alt accounts (many of which were created years ago as if in anticipation) in order to stay on mission.

It's all a very structured approach and it's been that way since the Xbox One launch. I've active on these forums long enough to have pretty much seen it all.

The people who are in denial of this aren't serious individuals.

I've been missing out for years, let me shoot a DM to Aaron :messenger_grinning_smiling:

You laugh but individuals like Klobrille don't stick at it for as long as he has for nothing. They've set a precedence where it's known that if somebody fanboys hard enough for them for long enough, eventually they will give them recognition and reward.

Considering you're doing this crap across several forums you're not far off my boy. Keep going.

You guys have never received brand new consoles and games with nice reviews guides and recommended sentences to put in your videos/articles. Saying that this is an Xbox exclusive is a complete joke.

Console manufacturers WILL control communication as much as they can, take down early videos that don't go their way, and blacklist sites (not providing reviews copies) if the ratings given by the site are not good enough. This has been verified for both Sony and Nintendo in the past.

Seriously. "Press kits" (high value gifts) and paid travel are intended to get people to throw glitter on your product on a much larger scale. Astroturfing is more insidious than the gratuitous nature of the obvious gifts given to media and influencers. It's harder to distinguish between astroturfing and people who just love a product.

360 was my favorite console of that gen, haven't played a current console since (thought I bought a used ps4 about a month ago). all the big companies seem inauthentic.

All this complaining about exclusives between MS and Sony is funny, because imho the only console that has a truly significant number of exclusives is the switch. Almost all of the big Sony exclusives come out on PC eventually (besides bloodborne lmao) and all MS stuff is already on PC. That being said, all of the Sony stuff that DOESNT make it to PC pretty much just seems like moviegames to me, which I am not interested in.

Either way, I hope MS isnt allowede to make the aquisition because it would be bad for gaming. The history of Microsoft in general absolutely points to that and idk how anyone could see otherwise. That being said, actiblizz is a stain on vidya as well, with activision being a giant ip death monstrosity and blizz being a hollow zombie husk of their former selves.

"Sony too! Sony too!".
Deflect, deflect, deflect.

Lmao, it's funny how accurate this was. It's their MO. Gaslight until the receipts show up and then say, "well, all companies do this." Or if Sony does something, blast them and their fans until it's revealed MS is worse and back to the standard, "well, all companies do this." Almost like they're following a playbook. 🤔

MS truly is a cancer on this industry, now.

For me, its always been apparent that MS heavily employ astroturfing. Hell I knew they used this strat back as far as OG Xbox. The mystery for me is whether Sony and NIntendo don't also use the tactic, or they do just in a much less overt manner.

Not sure. But, for MS it's obvious. Take DF, for example. During the 360 vs PS3 gen, DF, a technical gaming channel, naturally was going through a game with a fine tooth comb, looking for things like the amount of grass. Especially during that gen when quite a few games favored 360, and they were quick to recommend that system.

You jump to the beginning of PS4 vs XBO, where it was just a stone hard fact that the PS4 was more powerful, and DF was downplaying the difference. Making it seem like 720p/900p vs 1080p wasn't that big a deal, when before something like 720p vs 640p was, and the game would look great on which ever console you prefer. Of course, they started getting called out on it and had to drop that shit.
