Maybe someday they'll release the true ultimate edition of Kingdom of Heaven wherein the charisma vacuum that is Orlando Bloom is filled in by a decent actor.

Half the charm of the movie, for me, is that he's not a larger-than-life figure. Otherwise, this would just be another historical epic.

That movie would be too good for mere mortals to comprehend.

Seriously, the movie rocks even with Bloom. It´s that good, well the, DC is. Watched it again just this month.

I´m surprised that Leon was castrated for US release, I´ve only seen the European version and the parts that were cut were adding a lot to the movie.

Was the part where Portman thells the hotel clerk that Leon is her lover cut as well? Taht was so weird to watch.

I´ve only seen the Abyss once as a kid, I think it was the DC. Just like I´ve only seen Blade Runner Final Cut.

Aliens 3 I have no idea which version I´ve seen, but I got the awesome dvd quadrology set for 12€, so I can watch both.

Never saw the director's cut for Dark City, I am now intrigued...
Eh, its kind of ruined then. A friend of mine made me watch the DX first, and I'm really glad he did. The movie is so much better when you have absolutely no clue whats going on.

at least you'll always have have Point Blank and the Outfit.

And I imagine other directors will use Parker. I'd be happy if someone did what Westlake wanted and made it a series. Of course, I also want a series of movies about Lawrence Block's Keller. Or Matthew Scudder.

Metropolis doesn't belong anywhere near this list. It's basically the opposite of a so-called director's cut. The whole pursuit has been to recapture the original theatrical cut that was lost for decades.

Has the original version been released? :O I knew they were working on it, didn't know they'd finished it.

Both versions of Blade Runner are good. I like the 'noir' style voice over, I don't find it spoonfeedy at all. Both endings are ambiguous. My main complaint about the directors cut is it allows film snobs to go 'see, he's a replicant too' when that isn't the case at all - we are told nothing.

Leon - the directors cut is the only way it should be watched. The 'sexual' advances from Natalie Portman are not sexual, they're awkward and touching. It adds a lot to the central relationship. Have it on DVD, not sure if its available on bluray?

Kingdom of Heaven. Double edged sword. I can't watch the theatrical version anymore because it almost literally doesn't make sense. But the Directors Cut is so long it requires planning to watch, so it doesn't get watched very often.

That's why Kingdom of Heaven is a flawed movie. Probably more to do with the script. Movie is just too damn long. I love it, but I can never rewatch it.

It's easily rewatchable. I've done so many times. About to do it again soon.

Right from the get go the tone is completely different in the two cuts. It's obvious that the original intention was to make the movie as an homage to old 60s/70s crime movies. The music, the font and the cinematography show this really well.

The theatrical cut starts with the operation scene and the monologue, which is pointless and completely ruins the music. It also has some voice added for some reason, and it has a blue filter which ruins the look of the movie.

What the theatrical cut does is that it completely rips the original movie of it's style and homages, and it tries to be a more mainstream action movie. Mel Gibson basically admits this as well. He said that the director's cut was a good movie, but it was the 90s and he wanted a 90s movie. And it shows all the way through the movie.

To make such major changes to a movie after the director/writer already has made the movie is rarely (never?) a good choice. Especially when the director/writer don't even like the changes that are being made.

I don't disagree with you very much at all. The final cut can be silly and has some plot inconsistencies and struggles with tone at times, but even despite all of those flaws I feel it's far more entertaining. Is it the same level of quality? No, but it is far more fun and the Bronson character is definitely better the way Kristofferson played the role as opposed to some random voice in a phone.

I think that was my big problem with the other ending. The villain was barely there and as a result, made no impact.

I still think the voice-over for Blade Runner helped it . . . it re-enforced the film Noire style. But the 'happy ending' was stupid.
