Haywire & Coriolanus double feature weekend, sandwiched between Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy going wide this friday and The Grey on the 27th. this is the best January I can remember in a while.

I watched Norwegian Wood last year and like most people who read the book before watching the movie adaptation, I didn't like it. The worst offender was probably the mixed heritage model who couldn't act for nuts being cast as Midori.

8. Coriolanus (Ralph Fiennes; Jan. 20th)

Synopsis: A banished hero of Rome allies with a sworn enemy to take his revenge on the city.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Ralph Fiennes' blistering directorial debut is a tough watch, but his Shakespearean adaptation features excellent performances from everyone, especially including supporters Brian Cox, Jessica Chastain and Vanessa Redgrave. During TIFF I said, "interest wanes during overlong stretches of dialogue, but Fiennes’ vision of Coriolanus remains a brute tale of authority and what happens when power oversteps its boundaries."

This is the only movie im gonna watch at the theatre this month....if its as good as i think its going to be ill probably watch it multiple times
So excited.

Many of these will make the Netflix list, but I doubt I'll get to the theaters for any of them in January. The wife and I will eventually go see Underworld because we love that series, but it might not be until Feb.

3. The Grey (Joe Carnahan; Jan. 27th)

Synopsis: In Alaska, an oil drilling team struggle to survive after a plane crash strands them in the wild. Hunting the humans are a pack of wolves who see them as intruders.

Trailer

Why You Should See It: Joe Carnahan is returning to his grittier roots with this wilderness survival story. Re-teaming with his A-Team star Liam Neeson (in his obligatory early year action release), The Grey received fantastic reviews out of BNAT and is perfectly timed to hit theaters during the cold winter months.
Alaska... struggle to survive... plane crash strands them in the wild... animal hunting the humans.....

At least the original version was written by David Mamet.

I'll be playing this month by ear. Nothing is getting me really excited to watch in theaters, but I do want to get back into the theaters more often.

lol.

1) Mamet did not invent that scenario.

2) One bear is not a wolf pack.

3) THE EDGE wasn't all that good, so even if your insinuation was correct, no harm is being done.

4) Liam Neeson.

Eh, seems only "Beauty and the Beast 3D" for me.

Maybe "Norwegian Woods" if I can find it on cheap cinema. Oh, I now remember that Australia is getting "Girl with Dragon Tattoo" this month so I guess I'll see that for Craig.

Really interested in "Once Upon a Time In Anatolia" after watching the trailer but it looks like there's no release soon in my area. Really like good play on light instead of having everything correctly lit in the name of convenience. Also, Haywire definitely.

The only new movie I might see this month is underworld 4. It's been long enough I might have to marathon the other 3 and remind myself if I still enjoy it at all.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close opens this month wide, too. I saw it last night. It was completely average. Not as terrible as the trailers make it seem, but nothing special. A few good scenes.

I'm like, not understanding this. So you're Jordan Raup?

Yes, I started/own/run TFS. I've shared this 10 Films To See for over two years now.

Yeah, it is only getting a one-theater release in NYC unfortunately. Almost all of these are limited, but that is because the month of January is just mostly crap for wide releases.

jraup? wasn't that the weird guy who posted a lot about his indian girlfriend?

God, so young and dumb back then. I'm happily engaged now :)

Oh, I now remember that Australia is getting "Girl with Dragon Tattoo" this month so I guess I'll see that for Craig.

A bunch of films are getting international releases. I know War Horse opens in the UK mid-January.

Did anyone see The Innkeepers? That is also on VOD.

I love his threads as they tend to be more organized and informative than others.

Thanks!
