107 killed as construction crane crashes inside Grand Mosque in Mecca

That's one hell of a picture. That is a thing that people built purposely to be big and heavy and stable and NOT tip over, so it can lift huge things. Just shows how small we really are in comparison to forces that routinely move through our world. All we can do in response to tragedy like this is to continue to work on making our tools and building safer, mourn loss, and do our best to assuage the grief of those who have lost.

yes indeed Crane firms will likely look at this disaster

there is already a investigation going on as to how the heavy crane failed to stay stable

Hmmm, death cult confirmed.

This is nothing but tragic.

Of course the deaths are tragic, and RIP to those involved but the person you replied to isn't saying what you think he is saying/meaning. It's not that he's happy they're dead, but at least before they passed away they did something that has a huge reward in Islam and is what many Muslims strive to actually do - pilgrimage (Hajj) and due to how sacred the place is, some see it as a blessing that they passed away doing something righteous, despite it being so tragic, it's not like they aren't mutually exclusive. I don't think he's going to disagree with you when you say it's tragic, because it is, but it's quite hard to explain from a non-muslim perspective in what was meant. I know it may seem weird if someone read the comment without any context, but trust me, regardless of what you think, what is definitely a fact is that it's nothing about "death cult" and it doesn't make it any less tragic.

Hope that makes sense.

This is so heartbreaking :( RIP to all the poor souls who lost their lives. I can't imagine how painful it must be for their families and friends right now.

I just mean it seems weird this would happen on today of all days. I am not a conspiracy theorist, just noticing it and the date.

"I'm not a conspiracy theorist, I'm just an insensitive, tactless person who subscribes to the same mentality of conspiracy theorists."

My condolence to the family, but for a Muslim, its the best place to pass away, so bittersweet story right there.

But sucks for the families!

Suspicious day for this to happen.

yeah might as well shut up

shit news, safety measures probably fucked up

First the street fighter 5 thread, now this thread. So annoying to deal with anything related to the Arabic world on this date.

That is such a highly concentrated area with people... Really scary stuff.

Also, I wish the government had a better health and safety regrading those cranes. When I went there, I was scared how much of a danger these things posed just standing there. It was truly shocking thing just to let the expansion happen without any proper safety procedure, especially the fact that the concentration of people is very high at this time of the year.

RIP to all those

Maybe now they can stop turning that place into Disneyland. It's digusting what they're doing there and clearly they're doing it on the cheap too.

EDIT: good grief, they're trying to expand it to fit 2million people at once? That's insane.

This is so insanely fucked

DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY GODDAMN REGULATIONS THERE ARE FOR CRANES?! WHICH DUMB FUCK LEFT A CRANE UP IN HIGH WINDS. THATS FUCKING CRANES 101. Whoever the safety officer was on that project should be held accountable.

Sadly, its Saudi Arabia. There are no regulations. But hopefully this will wake up the higher ups and they do something regarding safety measures. Although I doubt we would learn from this, but lets hope I'm wrong.

Those poor slaves.

The fuck is this? The hell you trying to say man?

Even if they took all the precautions, one crane fell out of dozens and that is also due to the heavy rains. How much is it negligence versus being caught up in the bad side of nature?

A crane is supposed to be setup to withstand the worst conditions times a multiplication factor. It shouldn't fall because of bad weather.

KSA is good with safety practices inside Masjid al Haram and its surrounding precincts. They carry out the hajj pilgrimage, where 3 million people converge in the same spot on earth every year with nary a hitch. That is a herculean task to pull off. I read recently that students and professors from Germany came recently to observe how this massive security and safety campaign is carried out. There have been a few mishaps such as the tunnel ventilation failure and the tent fire incident in Mina. They have since banned all flammable material and came up with more redundancies. Its really a crazy feat they pull off every year. This however seemed like an accident of the highest magnitude. I am sure there was some negligence involved where you have to follow code when high winds are in the forecast which the supervisor did not adhere to, but this is not an indication of systemic failure.

On Ramadan the place was packed and they successfully handled the millions of people without any concerns

this mobile crane weighs a lot.... From such a tragedy maybe new methods will be used to maintain safety

maybe having temporary pikes hammered to the ground with coiled metal wires that one could attach to such a crane to hold it down when intense winds like this occurs

What happened ?

This is really a terrible tragedy. I didn't know much about muslim holy sites until recently but my readings on Wahabism led me to learn a bit about Mecca and the muslim pilgrimage and when you know what the saudis are doing with that place, you understand that such a terrible tragedy was bound to happen.

RIP.

Rain and turbulence has always been a problem for us here in the Hijaz area, shit like this has been going on for long. You are absolutely right on the practices surrounding Masjid El Haram, but this could've have been avoidable if more effort was put into safety precautions, well that's what I think. There was heavy rain and sandstorms during the last few days of this week in Jeddah, that should've at least shown them something was coming up.

The workers were certainly not Saudis. It's not just Kuwait doing it. Now they have to live with this on their conscience if they didn't die right away... Sucks for all involved, workers and worshippers.

You mean the construction men? What are you trying to say exactly?

It's Al Jazeera. They don't censor things like the US media does. They tell it how it is. US media tells you how you should think it is.

Maybe that's true but not really relevant when talking about squashed bodies. What is there to gain in showing that? Is it censorship?

Were there even any workers killed? It doesn't look like the crane was being operated at the time.

This sounds most likely. Non-International Mid East construction is a hell hole in terms of safety.

This may have been true years ago but weather reports are readily available. No excuse. Especially since it was an unsecured mobile crane if the pics are anything to go off of. The cranes in the other pictures are secured to the building itself.

You have a point. The biggest one in the world is right behind My house at the moment. A couple of weeks ago there was a big storm here and the crane got reeled in and was resting on and between sea containers during the bad weather.

Wonder if this dropped during the Hajj, that would've been real crazy (which is soon and an estimated 3 million people converge there)
As morbid as it sounds this tragedy might up the regulations to the max to save it from happening later down the line

If this weather happened again w/o this tragedy and same situation with an ungodly amount of people packed, I can't even fathom it

RIP to the souls
