I thought it was some extreme BDSM type shit but people on Reddit seem to think it's about keeping an erection. So, I dunno, I guess like Jake said 'wat'.

I think he wear a diaper. James Franco mentioned the dude's mom so it only makes sense.

People are definitely watching it, the book just popped back up on the New York Times Best Seller List. http://www.nytimes.com/best-sellers-books/2016-03-13/mass-market-paperback/list.html

Oddly enough, I went to a birthday party last night and the host was reading the book and watching the series on Hulu. I think the show is going to build up hype over time, bet a lot of people jump on once all the episodes are available.

This episode was a little slower, definitely a setup character building one. Feels like shit is about to hit the fan next week though. And I'm surprised by how nonchalant Jake was about the CIA possibly sending him a message.

It's interesting that the further along the TV series get, the more it diverges from the books. Nothing that really bothers me too much, but the character addition is sorta having a ripple effect

I'm really enjoying the show though I wish I could binge. It also makes me really want to read the book but I might wait a bit after the show finishes.

Yeah, I'm not sure about Hulu's policy of having a network kinda schedule where only one episode is dropped a week. If the whole thing came out straight away like Netflix does with their content I think there would have been a lot more buzz about this.

I wonder what would happen if Franco brought somebody into the future with him.

That's actually a good question with how the rules of time travel work in this series. I think they would just disappear as far as anyone in the 1960s and beyond is concerned and would be with him in the present. It gets interesting if they decided to go back to the 1960s because every time you walk through, it resets the timeline. So I would assume his interference in their lives and bringing them to the present would also be reset.

Franco should have never thrown his phone in the lake. That shit would have come in handy as a camera and a voice recorder. I wonder if it will ever be retrieved.

This show is like an old NES game. If you fuck up you have to restart at the begining, no save spots. Also you can't use the money cheat if you keep going back in time. The money will be gone so you can't accumulate millions of dollars by going back and forth.

I watched the first episode of this and was really annoyed by the whole "time fighting back against you" thing. I would be much more interested in examining the butterfly effect stuff in a more "realistic" way. (Yes, I realize I'm asking for realism in a show about a time traveling pantry.) I don't think I will continue watching.

Don't worry about time fighting back thing. It fights back hard in the first episode, and that's it. The remaining episodes you never see it anywhere on the same level, which in itself is annoying

Yeah, I am trying to figure out was it at the tip or at the stem?
Basically, in the book, he used a broom in the middle of the bed, separating them, so they never have to touch. And would freak out if Sadie would even touch the broom (or him).

My first post in this topic, so:
- I've read the book, and I'm really not enjoying all the liberties they took in the series. So many things have been altered. Some I understand, it is easier to show, and makes for better viewing.
- But some are straight up revisionist:
in the book, Oswald is undoubtedly a lone gunman throughout, with de Mohrenschildt and a couple of other Russian expats being there more because of Marina (one character not in the series is in love with her and helps her financially). Here they doubled down on CIA conspiracy, not present in the book.
In the series they found it necessary to play the racism card with Mrs. Mimi being black. I don't know if there is some rule about needing to have tacial diversity in the series.
Some more changes bother me, but I feel it woukd be merely nitpicking...

However, the entire series (4/8 episodes watched) gives me the feeling of the production having about 20 hours of script and tape, which they than randomly edited down to 8 hours, trimming or skipping entire segments or characters. That is why some characters seem so underdeveloped, with some acting really weird outside the grander context.
And unless they completely scrambled the book's timeline, 90% of high school setting is left on the cutting room floor (the importance of dancing, the drama class-football team story, etc.

I can't be objective anymore having read the book. Had I not, maybe I would be able to enjoy the show for what it is. But, since I have read it, the series is merely a typical Stephen King adaptation - an exercise in missed opportunities.
If I had to rate it, it would be a generous 6/10 at best.

As someone who is really enjoying the show, I would stop watching if they did a bunch of random high school drama. I'm in it for the main Lee Harvey conflict and Sadie story. A bunch of high school subplots would be boring and drag the story down.

In regards to Ms. Mimi I think you have to address the racial situation in a period piece set in the 60s. Most peoples view of race is so different now that going back to the 60s it would cause a major culture shock. I think they have done a great job showing how the casual racism affects Frank and his reaction to it, without making him a social activist.

For your second question, I think it's funny how no one knew what they were talking about. Did they think we would?

Google's telling me that in order to keep boys from playing with themselves, parents would pin a clothespin on their ding dong. The diaper theory doesn't make sense to me.

I'll have to get Hulu at some point to watch this (or maybe it'll get a blu-Ray release, please?) so I don't really know how much the show differs from the book, but I enjoyed the parts with Jake and Sadie and the school so much I actually wished Stephen King had just removed Oswald completely and just made a story about a man going back in time and trying to live there. All the Oswald bits were easily my least favorite parts of the book.

The thing is it's not random HS drama. It's an important part of the time travel dilemma, and it's a signal that the Sadie angle will become very different, losing the main motivator
to bring Sadie forward to 21st century
(this is a huge book spoiler).

Also, the HS part of the story is the bloodiest and the choice to avoid it seems like an attempt to keep the series PG rated. As if it was made for networks, shunning the liberties paid service offers them.

But as I said, those are complaints because I've read the book. Without it, my viewing experience would certainly be better, and I understand that some enjoy it a lot for what it is.

I'm having a hard time getting into the setting. I never liked 1960's Americana. I'll give the next episode a watch and see if I can get past this weird hangup of mine.

New episode is up. Franco apparently directed it, and he did a splendid job. Extremely tense.

New episode today:
Season 1: episode 5 "The Truth" (Directed by James Franco)

Everything begins to fall apart as Jake struggles to live two lives: teacher and time traveler. When Sadie's life is threatened, Jake has to make a terrible choice, leaving Bill to his own devices. Lee Harvey Oswald takes steps that will lead him into a date with destiny.
- Promo for this week's episode.

i am really enjoying this show. it's extremely nice to see franco act like a normal human being again, he's been the goofball for far too long.

even though the shining is a horror movie masterpiece i think king's works are more suited to miniseries and this is definitely an example of that. so entertaining.

Hulu is owned by the networks so it is run like them.
They still believe in the "watercooler" nonsense from 20 years ago.

Great episode. But I kept thinking why doesn't he start again, and just try to make better decisions this time around. It worked for Bill Murray.

You know how the "Previously on..." segment at the start of the episode clues you in on what will happen in the episode? For some reason, this episode's segment made me think Jake was going to go back to reset and try again. I was thinking that the guilt over what happened with Sadie would make him want to try again.

It's nice being on the west coast and watching this Sunday night. The banner on the home page still lists the previous episode but you can find the next one unlocked on the show page.

I wanted a scene where Jake has to explain to her in great detail why he's not full of shit so the point where she has no choice but believe him. Movies/shows never do that scene, though.

They probably skip those scenes since they'd be too long and boring or whatever but I always hope they happen but never do.

Ok, fantastic episode. I'm really really enjoying the show and love most of the characters. All the actors have done a great job!

That last scene though...she was way too cool about the whole thing. They could have just let her be a bit more shocked/in disbelief about it. She had like one line of any sort of doubt and that was it. I'm glad she finally knows but I wish they would've handled the scene way better or given it more time.

Other than that, loved it!

Woof.

Last two episodes have been a huge downturn.

That scene in the kitchen was the least suspenseful bit of TV I've seen in a LONG time.

He should have been holding them at gunpoint the ENTIRE TIME, rather than the nonchalant shit he was doing. Jake had a ton of opportunities to do something.

Then the doctor comes out and acts like Dr. Wordsmith from Arrested Development and totally botches his lead in.

Spoilers from the book:
I read the book 4 years ago and if I remember correctly, one of the reasons Jake brings her to the present is she's disfigured really badly. Now she's gonna have a nasty scar from that facial wound but it honestly didn't seem that bad.

So when the doctor said they didn't have the stuff to fix her face made me think, will he take her back to 2016 to fix her face?

I thought he had only lost 15 minutes or so.

Only a few minutes will have passed in the present. So if you go into the rabbit hole at 12:00pm on March 15th, 2016, when you come back out it will be 12:02 on March 15th, 2016. But Jake is still aging, that doesn't get reversed or slowed down. He is three years older than he was when he left, by virtue of having lived in the past for that long.

A lot of their other original series get dumped all at once on Hulu.

I have a feeling they wanted to test if people's habits have changed fully. That and if you subscribe week one that's two months of subscription. I like not actually powering through it and having something new on Monday.

OOOOOOoooooo, I though that you didn't age while in the past for some reason.

Fantastic episode with some of the best scenes of the series, but it has some small moments that play too often into TV show tropes. These have been peppered throughout the series, but the good more than outweighs them.

The worst in this episode was the whole "something REALLY important has happened that I could explain very quickly to you but instead I'm just going to bark some short orders so you remain confused and you can hold this against me later because I didn't explain the gravity of the situation."

Like, dude, tell Bill that
Sadie is being held hostage and you want to save her.

Because of stuff like that, the final scene with
Bill crying, asking him where he was/why didn't he show up,
don't really have as much impact for me.
