11 passengers skipped security lines at NY's JFK airport, TSA still looking for 8

Federal authorities are still looking for eight of the 11 passengers who breezed through a TSA security line at JFK without getting fully screened yesterday.

At around 6 a.m. yesterday, 11 passengers at JFK's Terminal 5 walked through an unmanned security line without submitting to a check—at least three of them set off the metal detector, according to surveillance video. Port Authority spokesperson Joseph Pentangelo told Gothamist in a statement yesterday that the TSA did not alert Port Authority police about the breach until 8 a.m., and though officers attempted to locate the passengers, it is believed they all boarded flights.

"The TSA tried to mitigate the situation by sending their screeners through the terminal in violation of all the protocols,” an unnamed source told the Daily News. “The protocol says law enforcement is immediately notified.”

Police were able to identify three passengers using surveillance video, according to Pentangelo. All three boarded a flight to California and were screened when they landed.

The TSA does not believe these passengers pose a threat.

sigh... TSA is such a joke. hopefully it's no big deal, but I guess if nothing happens after 18 hours or so, we should be fine.

Okay but why did they go through the unmanned station? I'd never do that in an airport.

Terrorists for sure.

The only way something would happen would be if a group of people trying to do something hang around the airport all day every day with tickets waiting for a security slip-up and today was the day. Some people thought they found a way to skip the nightmare of security at the airport.

I think the real issue here is the delay in notifying law enforcement.
Mishaps happen, but this is an attempted cover up if the protocol is law enforcement should be contacted immediately...no shit they all boarded planes in that time lol.

If there was a vote held tomorrow on eliminating the TSA I would 100% vote to get rid of it. I remember flying in the 80s as a kid. We'd get to the airport 20 minutes before take off, walk straight up to the tarmac and just walk onto the plane via the stair car with the person at the bottom checking your ticket.

Heck, i'd even accept smoking on planes if thats the trade off needed to get everyone on board. Sure, sometimes planes are gonna get bombed but millions of people saving hours of time every day would be totally worth it.

I'd say they're even less than a placebo. Their simple incompetence regularly makes me feel less safe at airports. Coupled with how fucking rude they are to everybody and how it increases panic trying to get through security, I think they're a net negative for safety.

Kinda wonder if the passengers were waiting for the TSA agent, kept waiting, said "fuck it," and caught their flight.

Yeah, absolutely. Plus the lack of any standard procedure at airports with TSA (intentional lack of standards, but still), means that most flyers probably don't know what they're supposed to do there. When I was flying out of DC last year, I'm waiting in this long line at Dulles, and TSA walks up to me and a handful of other people and pulls us out of line, and just walks us right through the "TSA Pre-check" approved line (I don't have pre-check). Just... takes us through lets us go on our way, didn't need to take my computer out, take my shoes off, or anythign else... I was like "Oh.. uh, ok..?" Probably saved me and 20 or 30 other people a half hour of waiting.

So if I'm waiting at security and nobody shows up, I'd just assume nothings wrong, walk through and be on my way.

I think TSA forgets that while they do that job every day the majority of flyers passing through might only do that once a year or once every couple years, so while it's their routine job, flying isn't routine for most people.

Here I thought they would enjoy their weird sense of self importance by power tripping and tackling someone.

As someone who flies frequently, this worries me. How fucking incompetent do you have to be to fail to man all access points? I mean your sole job is to fucking screen passengers. Thank goodness nothing bad came of this.

Yep. Its like having an ADT sign in front of your house but having that ADT sign means it takes an extra two hours to enter your home.

I legit have been in line at the airport looking at an unmanned security station thinking to myself "I could totally skip this line and no one would notice"

Pittsburgh International is real lax with their alternate checkpoint at times.

wouldnt surprise me i typically see at least 5 or 10 TSA agents standing around doing jack and fucking shit almost every time i fly.

Surely we can find some compromise here......

To be fair, I imagine that placebo partly works on criminals as well who then don't even try it in the first place.
But of course hard to know if that's any substantial number.

You gotta be a real shithead to do something like that.

Its not unusual in other places to be able to walk through at times eg the last time I went to China, the in bound luggage check was completely empty and you could just walk through (the Visa check was fully staffed and operational), when I left on the other hand I got the full shebang.

I'm not the biggest fan of the "In my day" line of thinking but man, travelling back in the day was pretty fucking dope.

Remember when you could drive right up to the entrance to the terminal to get picked up/dropped off instead of paying exorbitant prices for 5 minutes of parking?

It's shameful that we're sitting here talking about eliminating useful agencies like the EPA or DOE while the TSA is still around

Huh? Where can you not do this anymore?

I'm confused at people asking how this happens. Like, I don't know how this doesn't happen all the time except for the fact that people generally understand how security checkpoints work and follow the rules.

There's just a bunch of ropes to guide security lines, it's trivial to walk through if a line is closed down, the only thing stopping you is that someone sees what you are doing. Most bystanders won't really care or question it, so then it's a matter of did the TSA security agent see you.
