15 years ago, Segata Sanshiro spread the gospel that is the Sega Saturn

I never understood why they made Sega Saturn so incredibly difficult to program you'd need PhDs. Shit was cray.
Blame Nakayama. Always blame Nakayama. Hell, he never knew what he was doing back then anyway. Anyone who fires Tom Kalinske because he's insecure as shit deserves to get out of the industry.

Best STG on Saturn indeed. Well I´m also partial to Soukyugurentai. It would have been nice to have Segata ads on any of those two, I wonder if he could have handled the awesome of the Raizing shmups.

he could beat them on max rank using only his face

Sega Saturn. Segas last love letter to gamers. Still plugged in and ready to go in my bedroom. Will never be beaten.

Oh, and I always wondered what happened to segata. Thanks for the link!

I feel like I must've stumbled across this thread a few months ago, but yeah. I watch through all of the old commercials at least once a year even though I never owned a saturn. I love the last one, where he
sacrifices himself
. Then the Dreamcast came. Someone seriously needs to be resurrected.

Back in the days I loved these, they use to show them during commercial breaks on WWF(it still was back then 97/98) Raw and that shit was hype(along with all the other gaming related commercials which were like almost 80%) and just made staying up late, worth it.

Now a days there's pretty much no gaming commercials, unless its Call of Duty or something, and those are boring as shit, I just miss those days of really good marketing as they made you excited to look forward to new releases.

I was there. Bless them.

I remember seeing that campaign. I still think they had the right idea.

Garegga definitely has one of my favorite soundtracks in all of STG-dom. Too bad the Saturn copy is ridiculously expensive ^^;

I have Soukyugurentai, Shienryu, Dodonpachi, Layer Section/Galactic Attack and of course RS... need Garegga and Batsugun... anything else people would highly recommend? Preferably, games that won't break the bank.

Also, my favorite Segata Sanshiro ad is definitely the Shining Force 3 dance party.

Do you have any of the Konami compilations? The Gradius and Salamander collections are great value for your money, I don´t think any of those go for over $100. Hell the Gradius one is worth it for Gradius II alone. A quick ebay search show a Gradius copy for $30 and other for $80, and there´s a Salamander listing for $60.

There´s also the Parodius titles, but I´m afraid not everyone is fond of that.

Give Gunbird or Sengoku Blaede a try. You need more Psikyo in your diet.

In my headcanon I always consider Segata Sanshiro to be Kamen Rider 1's post-Rider life after Shocker's demise.

I second this, more Psikyo is always good and I love the Strikers 1945 series, though those are not necessarily cheap. If you like Taito STGs there´s also Darius Gaiden and Gekirindan, though I´m not sure on the price on those.

I owned a Saturn for 6 months until I sold it. It was a boring machine with mostly shit games and not worth the space it was occupying.

The dreamcast is however one of the best consoles ever.

Sure. It's close enough to Fujioka's career, anyway.

The SEGA Saturn is a truly awesome device, and I'm still impressed by how many great games came out for the platform. Not to forget: technical achievements like Saturn Shenmue and Shining Force III's phantasmagoria of special effects both fly in the face of oblique hardware design. Japanese game developers had a difficult time with this system!

Yeah, I have the Konami comps for PSP actually... love Gradius II, Gaiden and Salamander.

Will take a look, yeah the only Psikyo I really have experience with is Strikers 1945 which I've actually run into a whole bunch of times at various arcades around here.

Will take a look at Gekirindan, it's the first I've heard of it. I'm not huge on the Darius series apart from the great aesthetics and of course the ZUNTATA soundtracks.

If anything the ports on Saturn are great due to the ability to play them on a nice CRT using a stick, you can´t have that on PSP! Gekirindan is good old school STG fun, reminds me of later Toaplan games. It is also available on Taito Legends Vol. 2 on PS2/Xbox.

Gunbird 2 for the Dreamcast was amazing as well. I don't think I've ever been as thoroughly engrossed in mastering a shooter as I was with that one.

On topic, this was by far the best advertising campaign for videogames ever. I'm sad I only got to see it so long after it had aired.

Anyone have a high res/good quality snapshot/image of Segata in the Santa outfit holding out the Saturn? I want to make it my avatar for December.

Yup, especially Salamander Deluxe Pack for Salamander 2.

How is Sengoku Blade? I've seen it around and been meaning to pick it up, but I'm a little gun shy from my experience with Sol Divide. I like Sol Divide, particularly for its theme/aesthetics, but maneuvering feels a bit clunky with the character sprite.

I really like the Strikers series. Strikers 1945 is the default disc for my kiosk, as it's a good pick-up-and-play game, and also noob-friendly for visitors.

Did you import? The wealth of 2D shooters and fighters is amazing. Even discounting those, the domestic releases were nothing to scoff at either: Games such as VF2, Sega Rally, Astal, Panzer Dragoon series, Night Warriors, SFA2, Bomberman, etc., definitely made the system worthwhile.

Just bought the import version of Marvel Super Heroes for $20 shipped. PUMPED! Digging out that 1MB RAM cart now.
Great manual art and Anita secret character ftw!

I kinda want one of those big, white fake Sega Saturns now.

I'd punch on it.

You think someone, somewhere has that?

Maybe Bernie took it on his way out?

It seems like S0L's challenged the community to make a nice, organized poll on the official Sega forums. So if any of those people who wanted a chance to get characters like Opa-Opa back or see some Phantasy Star love, they might want to head over there.

You can vote for Segata Sanshiro to be added as a character in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed here.

Segata neoGAFer, I bet he exists on GAFer in hidden form, waiting to pounce like the night ninja he is. I miss you Segata, come on and critique things with aplomb!

I bet he still lurks, a visit to his profile reveals forum activity earlier this year.

Great marketing campaign.

More people need to celebrate the marketing and software of the Saturn. Last great Sega console. :(

Humorless jackanape poster. Such a disservice to the spirit of the character.

Youngsters...is there something in your life you are completely devoted to? Something you sink into so deeply you put your life on the line? You must play Sega Saturn! Play... until your fingers break! Until your fingers break!

If I could throw people and make them explode on impact, I would have owned a Sega Saturn too.

My cousin actually had one. Saturn Bomberman was arguably the best Bomberman of all time. My cousins and I would play it for hours on end. So many fond memories. :(

Does Galactic Attack have the same soundtrack as Layer Section? I know they are the same game, but sometimes regions have different themes for one reason or another.
