Maybe they should calculate the unemployment rate of two computer related degree right now.

Computer Engineering is still in high demand... computer science I cannot comment on. :lol

Those salaries do not look off to me. That is what I started out as 6 years ago with a MS degree in an area of the country with an extremely low cost of living. Engineering is a great major if you can get through it. Society will always need people who actually produce shit rather than comment on shit or play with numbers in excel.

Noooo, economics disappeared since the last list.

Which seems sadly appropriate given that I lost my job in the same time frame.

You're an economist?

Might need to look at grad school for that in 2.5 years and some job leads if I lose my job.

(Yeah, my economics degree is now doing weather, go figure)

hmm.. where are the nukes?

The problem with nukes is that there is a limited amount of places you can work: one of the few companies that do design, or a plant. Nukes will be in high demand in 5-10 years since they are just starting to finally build new plants, and nuclear engineering was extremely popular back in the day and then dropped like a stone, so you have a ton of gray hairs about to retire. I worked in the nuclear industry for a few years and the big concern was that everyone was about to retire, so I wouldn't worry so much.

These numbers are crazy. Starting salary for an electrical engineer here in Japan is between 200,000 and 250,000 yen monthly ($2200~2700)... I should try to move to the US T_T

lol, guess I'm moving to the states whenever I'm done...

the starting salary for engineers ( in general ) is lower here than that of a garbage mans...

I wish I was joking, people fucking spit on engineers here

Isn't this the same every single year? Is it really that surprising that the people that have to display a work ethic, problem solving skills, and the ability to work in teams in college the ones that make the most money right after graduation?

Of course, this doesn't show the bank those finance fucks make with their yearly bonuses. >:|

Unf Unf Unf! Almost there! Suck it down, Wellie!
You shouldn't have much trouble finding a job but I graduated into a better job market. Instant higher pay, boom!

Where do you live?

My brother's getting his PhD in Chemical Engineering. Lucky him! I, on the other hand, am working towards getting a degree in economics. :lol =(

I find it amazing every time I read posts like that, how education is so different throughout the world.

I mean, here, I can go to any university I like and not pay a penny, but rather get money from the state.
Of course this changes if I choose something like a Elite Uni...but still.

Having a 200,000$ debt at such a young age is just INSANE....
Same here in PR. They pay me to study, and engineering graduates (most of the time ) land jobs because of internship opportunities they took during their last years . It's amazing.

I'm a CpE student BTW.

These numbers don't look off to me for #10 which I happen to fall into. I think if you factor in places with higher cost of living (which in turn gets factored into the salary) then it makes sense.

land of the brave home of the free : Sweden

most my engineeringmates ( most of them mechanical engineers ) are making around 30k usd prior taxes ( starting salaries ) , and such seems to be the norm

and for garbage men it is around 45k usd a year, prior taxes.

highest paying degrees if you can actually find a job, economy is fucked atm, i was unemployed for like 8 months prior to finding the job i am at right now, i've been here for 7 months now, but now they are starting to lay ppl off because its slow as fuck in the office

i have a MS in ME btw, might be looking for a job again soon :/

Nice. Graduating from UIUC with a computer engineering degree in a few months. Though I'm pretty decided on grad school next year because I still don't trust the job market that much and I'd like to make some extra cash when I do go out on the workforce...to pay back all that damn student debt!
Took me a minute to figure out you're probably talking about Urbana-Champaign. I've never heard a graduate refer to it as anything but U of I. :lol

Welp, these Bio/Psych degrees won't amount to shit I suppose :(
Get your PhD and open your own practice, eventually you'll be making income as a therapist making $150+/hour (at least) and from the rent that others pay you (if you open a counseling center). Family friends with 2 psychologists who are pretty much rolling in it. Just gotta find the right rich suburban area full of malfunctioning and broken families loaded with emotionally withdrawn commuter husbands, housewives that could open their own pharmacies, and kids who cut themselves. Fucking goldmines, hot damn.

I had to suck it down for a 34,000 long term contractor job, but I suppose with the benefits and other perks it comes out more comparable. (and the fact that I live in a low cost-of-living region!).

MIDWEST FTW!!!

QFT!

I made 27K last year and my wife made 35K. We live in a house that people on the coasts would drool over. Back in LA where I used to live, my current house (including front and back yard) would be easily a 2 million dollar house.

Filthy Liberal arts grad here.

1st year salary: 52k, 65k with overtime.
2nd year salary: 67k, 89k with overtime.
3rd year salary: 74k, ???k with overtime.

Wait....aren't you a cop?

Oh, wow. I didn't know police officers made that much. News to me!

What would the "liberal arts" degree have to do with law enforcement though?

The same thing a liberal arts degree has to do with any other line of employment. :P

(but seriously, the writing and analytical skills from my history and poli sci degree translate quite well into policing, for writing warrants, etc.)

and yeah, I figured as much, Solo. I always get a kick out of the assumption that a cop's pay is shit. :lol

you need a degree to be a cop in most states, any degree!

For a while NYC cops did get shit salaries was one of the reason I joined the military instead of being an NYC cop. Fuck Bloomberg he was like to be an NYC cop its a privilege and you should be proud of the prestige and shit. Then all of a sudden I became a sailor and then Bloomberg gave NYC cops like a 30,000 raise fffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. Seriously I was like 2 interviews away from possibly getting into the academy before I decided "forget about it let me enlist in the service"

Now I'm working on my Computer Science degree. 2.5-3 years away from getting it.

:lol :lol

So.....the same thing my degree is doing for me!!!! I AM NOT ALONE!

I just thought this particular study was implying that the people were actually going into the field they have a degree in.

lol at com sci and IT salaries. In the south, you're lucky to get $30K a year in those areas.

engineering degree + MBA from a top 15 school = $XXX,XXX + signing bonus (~$25k)

Or at least, that's what i'm banking on :D

Move north. I can say that here in the Philly area there are tons of jobs for Java developers. I hear in NYC there are tons of jobs for .Net developers.

Ya, and Suffolk County cops are paid even better than NYPD. 97k salary before any overtime! :o

Oh yeah? Well I'm pre-med. I..um...I'll be making a lot! In ten years! And I quite literally won't have time to have kids until I'm 30! Beat that, engies!

hmm. How do I approach this post without getting banned....... I'm only going to address one thing, they don't pay you to study in Puerto Rico. Most people in PR take advantage of the Federal Pell Grant Program, deserving or not, and the state university is heavily subsidized by federal money that's why they can get away with $45 a credit hour.

You are not being payed to go to college, it's supposed to be government help for the poor.

Information Sciences & Systems $54,038

Young mulaaaa baby!

1 semester left!

Sounds about right. Everybody I know that graduated last year in MIS around here (Houston) started in the upper 50's, shit one guy started in the lower 60s.

otake said:
You won't be making that as a recent graduate.

...

Did you not just read what I wrote in my post above you?

I don't know what area you're in, but in my area..as I mentioned..that is about right for undergraduates here.

The people I associate myself with that were in my major all started around that or even got higher.
