Great post if you've been even slightly interested in animu sales in the past. I always like it when people obsessively pursue some obscure facet of their hobby to such exacting detail.

Also:

And just for the hell of it, totals (not adjusting for volume or episode count) of completed (or only 1-2 left) shows topping ¥1 billion from Summer '08 season to present:

¥3,558,459,450 Bakemonogatari
¥2,888,726,400 K-ON!! (2 cour)
¥2,309,061,300 K-ON!
¥2,029,893,600 Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
¥1,499,645,700 Durarara!! (2 cour)
¥1,482,448,275 To Aru Kagaku no Railgun (2 cour)
¥1,415,086,050 Angel Beats!
¥1,358,193,900 Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai
¥1,281,284,130 Kidou Senshi Gundam 00 S2 (2 cour)
¥1,269,370,620 Clannad ~After Story~ (2 cour)

See the problem here is that Key art is not mediocre, it is hideous and awful. This might work for other anime, but not Key anime.
The thing is the art isn't a really a good determining factor at all. If the core story isn't entertaining all the fancy artwork in the world wouldn't keep me watching.

I think that the art isn't really the end all be all, but shit I'd much rather look at something good looking, than something hideous. Especially for a prolonged period of time.

Would you like it better if I said I preferred characters I care about with mediocre art to characters I don't care about at all with good art?

I had no problem staring at Key art for the 60+ hours I spent playing the Clannad VN, so I can't agree with you there. Of course it's not a looker, but it's not offensive to my eyes either.

Dantalian no Shoka 11

Dantalian has been a series where each episode was either amazing, or average. This episode is the former,
we learn Huey's backstory. Learn the arch-nemesis. Learn how Phantom books are made.
This show is 12 episodes, and is only now getting into the meat of the overarching plot, I hope a second season is confirmed.

Just read the doujinshi about Anaru and you're set. She gives the best of her there.
I have to say though, Anaru is the worst character in the series. She is hot though...

what is the next project for that team? anyone know?

On the first point, well sure. One the second, the main girl in Clannad looks like a bug, it's frightening!

I'd rather spend my time with something ugly and entertaining, than something decent and mind numbingly boring. Artwork doesn't measure entertainment value.

Aesthetics can be entertaining! Like in Nichijou for example all the best gags are purely visual gags and are visually engaging and the entertainment is derived solely from said visuals. I'd rather not look at something through a lens of ugly in the hope of finding something good, at least most of the time.

I mean people here think Kemonozume is totally ugly, but I think it is neat looking! :>

Poppo=Best
Anaru=Worst

And I'm guessing he means you're salty about the Penguins.
Did you read the Poppo, uh... story... that someone wrote about how he needed to help Menma get to heaven?

I was never able to be serious about the show again.

I'm still not 100% sure what the visual appeal of ahoge is supposed to be.

Well Clannad-girl is the unfortunate victim of DOUBLE-ahoge, and I'm sure that enhances the problem.

This is a good example of not judging entertainment value from looks. I've really enjoyed Higurashi despite it's looks.

Thankfully,
no. I was going to google search it but my instincts are telling me not to.

I dunno man, I've been told that this is "charming" or something like that. lolz

I've only seen "charming" used to refer to Umineko's sprites, not Higurashi's, which are very bad indeed. Though even in Higurashi, Ryukishi shows a talent for drawing faces which are very expressive of a character's emotional or psychological state.

Would I like better art? Sure. But when the story is as good as it is in Higurashi and Umineko, I'm not going to reject them just because the writer is a poor artist.

You gotta give R07 credit for drawing some of the best trollfaces ever in Umineko, which is quite an improvement over Higurashi, even if the blockhands still exist.

However nothing can ever beat ZUNart... nothing.

is it just me or does every anime discussion topic here makes a reference to key art in some way

I would really put Anohana above, just because how Iroha failed to live up to the expectation of that great first episode. If your series is going to be mediocre, please, don't set your bar high by creating a good pilot.
I would say the same for AnoHana with how the series turned out overall.

At least it decided to come up with a great idea about past, connection and social interaction.
And it lacked execution. That doesn't somehow make the show good because the idea was a good idea and was appealing to you.

I just don't get how inconsistant some of you are (the ones who bother to discuss this matter), Aren't many Anime out there just like Anohana where not much devoloping happnes and decide to pomder the same thing over and over again?
It doesn't dissuade me from thinking about how disappointing AnoHana has been by its own qualities, separate from whatever number of other bad shows there may have been before it.

Certainly one of the better episodes in the series, although I had to laugh at the basketball scene.
Giant smoke monster reminded me of The Anti-Spiral

We need more school girls with big weapons against ugly aliens animes. We really do.

Black Rock Shooter, while it doesn't exactly fit that criteria, actually has the general idea more or less down. I hope the upcoming anime does something useful with the concept.

I'm bigger than this, I won't mention the character arcs amounting to nothing, the ghost rules being all over the place, which are used when apprpriate to the plot, and a poor attempt at getting the viewer engaged and sympathetic to the casts mental problems using only one single flashback.

I will however say that all but the last episode felt like a waste of time.
Actually, I disagree. The character arcs amounted to nothing but melodrama for the sake of drama with very bare character motivations, the ghost rules were inconsistent and used inappropriately when the plot demanded it with no sleight of hand touch, and the only attempt at engaging the audience was through emotional appeal, which severely lacked substance and was predictably melodramatic nonsense in specific instances.

THE IDORUM@STER 12:

Catching up with this now that I've finished the Gears of War 3 campaign.

I'm still not sure if I like this show when it's being serious. When it's being wacky and funny, it's really quite good. When it's trying to be serious, I get a bit uncomfortable. It's hard to imagine anyone seriously thinking that anyone's supposed to be taking it seriously, but ever since episode 11 they have been playing it straight and it just feels off. I actually want them to take a chance and implement
Awakened Miki
into the storyline, just to see how it would be handled.

Miki completely fails at trying to be tsun. Just don't even try.

LOL at "Your Visual stat increased!" at the end.
