Seriously though. GAF likes to complain about people who only watch football during the world cup. Then maybe someone should make a thread of where to watch football now the world cup is over. There's plenty of people who after this will be have no idea about Leagues, and other cups and such. It's time for GAF to stop complaining about the problem and do something about it.

I agree it's a weak comparison but any way you slice it Germany has looked the best team to this point that's my real point.

Compared to Argentina? Maybe. In the entire tournament? I don't fully agree. They've had their full share of lackluster showings just like every team has. 1-0 against the US. 2-2 against Ghana. Those don't indicate them being a clear cut above everyone else.

Having said that, they've certainly chosen the right time to peak this tournament.

You are quite confident in light of the fact that you have no more insight into what will happen today than anyone else.

I'm confident in light of the fact that Argentina's games against Switzerland and the Netherlands were two of the worst games in the whole cup and showed off that their whole style of play is dependent on Messi and Di Maria - and Messi alone isn't going to see the light of day against Germany.

Support your local team breh.

I know where you are going with this, but tbf that thread isn't newb friendly at all. It's a pretty fun read but it is also exhausting.

FootyGAF is a one way only trip, though.

There's a Football thread and a MLS thread in community.

As an American, it took me months of diligent study to understand the different leagues and how progression works in the countless league championships.

Just go to Football-Gaf and ask. Football ain't hard to understand

Really? Were you looking into the South American leagues? They get up to all kinds of crazy shit from what I know :P

All the major European leagues follow the same league format/system I think, except for Germany which has a relegation playoff.

I'd be happy to contribute to the English football section of a thread dedicated to letting people know how to get into the sport

Alright I'm not quite sure if this is a dig at people arguing in here, or actually just you saying that there should be some thread for new comers to football... So here's two responses lol:

1.
It's not a problem at all though. The problem only comes when self proclaimed experts who knows nothing, tries to lecture the rest of the thread.

2.
The football thread itself can move fast and can seem very insular, but people are friendly to newcomers, also if they know next to nothing about the leagues and football in general.

Yeah I'm not talking about those.

First off their in the community ghetto. Who gets there without a subscription anyway?
Also they'll be overwhelming.

I know what you mean, problem is, there are shitton of leagus to follow, and some only have a few people interested in them.
I think a separate Champions League thread would be pretty cool though.

I'm mostly fascinated by the confidence in Argentina supporters, it reminds me of my brother who blindly believed United could do it against Barcelona in 2011. I don't get that sort of thing, I'm a realist. Can you pull off an upset? Of course you can manage to convert a couple of set pieces / half chances and defend Greek style but I would be scared as fuck with no expectation of winning in this particular situation.

Fair enough. I think it should be an exciting match today and am looking forward to it.

BPL and Bundesliga (Liverpool and Leverkusen fan). I got particularly confused with the Champions League progression and the different tournaments (Super Cup vs. FA Cup etc.). Trying to figure out who was eligible for each one was a nightmare.

Even if Argentina loses, isnt that still salt in the wound? They got second place and you got nothing.

Good ol' rock.

The beautiful thing about all of this is that, even if Germany loses, Argentina winning in the heart of Brazil will literally cause mental breakdowns over there.

Yes, my schadenfreude is in 1000% asshole mode.

This is why the rest of the world doesn't like us.

People are forgetting, no European country has won a WC in South America. Will that be the same story come tonight?

Did they have money in the 90's?

The Ajax side in 91 was Dutch football at it's pinnacle. PSV's run in 2005 wasn't bad either.

Other teams didn't have as much as they do now. So in relative terms, the Eredivisie has declined financially, yes.

Ha, my proper team, and my favourite German team :D

Think the best bet with European competitions is to just go with the flow and pick it up as it happens, the way teams get into it and which teams can't play which other teams is a bit confusing even as someone who's been watching it all every season for 8 years :P

Basic format of the CL is the same as the World Cup though only with home and away legs

So basically if I'm an American who wants to watch American soccer, there is

- MLS which happens yearly
- CONCACAF which is the 'sector' we are in that has a number of slot of teams from our region to go to through the world cup. It is taken from the best MLS players
- Women's? I heard the women's is good.

Good to see I'm not the only one with a similar thought process. Rooting for a Germany, but if Argentina wins it does make me a little happy knowing the Brazilians may be sad and/or angry over that fact. This sports drama is addicting; haven't followed a tv show since Breaking Bad. 24 had too many seasons beforehand for me to catch up on and not into medieval setting too much so no GoT.

They still had a considerable amount more than Ajax and co did back then. A wealthy investor would be appealing to the league, but it would be worse than PSG in Ligue 1.
