21:9 Gaming Thread | That cinematic feel

Can video cards even run at a smooth frame rate in 21:9? How powerful do you need to support 3440 x 1440 when was can barely do 4K unless you have top of the line video cards.

It's not hard to do the math and see

1920x1080 (1080p) = 2.1 million pixels
2560x1440 (Also 16:9) = 3.7 million pixels
3440x1440 (Ultrawide) = 5.0 million pixels
3840x2160 (4k) = 8.3 million pixels.

I have a 2560x1080 ultra wide which is very little difference from 1929x1080 in terms of performance. You don't need to go 4K to get into 21:9.

I5 with a 970 and I easily get 60 fps in most games still near maxed out in most cases.

The performance difference between 1920x1080 and it's 21:9 equivalent of 2560x1080 is pretty minimal to me. Around 5-10 FPS, depending on how demanding the game is, and I have a fairly weak GTX 960 so....

4K is 66% more pixels than 3440x1440 (as a poster above has pointed out), which makes 3440x1440 a lot easier to drive. Still pretty tough though. How much power you need depends on your preference for framerate, graphical settings, etc.

Well that's good because I don't think that exists. Yet.

So much blatantly false information in this thread.... I can't even....

That's like saying a game doesn't perfectly support 16:9 because it shows letterboxed cutscenes :P

That thread has been a blast to read.

The X34 has completely wiped my need for a 4k monitor. The combo of the 21:9 aspect ratio, high refresh rate and gsync is wonderful. The only downside I can think of is that there's still a bunch a game that wont support it
Overwatch
which only drives home the feeling of 21:9 just being more immersive. That and I can't find a desk mounted stand in Australia.

Already mentioned but 3440x1440 is CONSIDERABLY less pixels being pushed than 4k. It's closer to a regular 1440p monitor (2k) than it is 4k in how much power it requires.

Also you don't need to max every game. "Ultra" usually has completely superflous extras that offer no visible image quality difference whereas bumping the resolution up and increasing FPS by running it on high or even medium will make the game look drastically better

Curious to know how the 1070 preforms on 3440 x 1440.

I run a 980Ti at that res which is very similar in performance to a 1070 and it powers it very well imo, I recently upgraded to the Acer X34 from a 24inch 1080p monitor and strangely even with the big increase in resolution most games actually feel smoother!!, I can only really put that down the GSYNC and higher fresh-rate, they actually wowed me more than the 21:9 aspect ratio itself.

seriously, that thread. 21:9 has been the biggest "oh shit" moment in gaming since I experienced HD with the 360. Can't wait for my 1080 to come on Friday so I can crank games for 3440x1440.

Any 34" monitor below £700 (or $1000) that doesn't have backlight bleeds?

Been checking out Dell, LG, Asus, and AOC, but all looks like all of them have the same defect.

Yeah, the VA panels like the S34E790C have zero backlight bleed or glow. That's an IPS issue.

That's the unfortunate thing. All those monitors are using LG panels. Which are IPS. It's doubful you'll find a perfect IPS display that doesn't have lightbleed or little IPS-glow.

If you don't want that and don't fussed about viewing angles. Take a look at the Samsung Ultrawide or models that have a VA panel.

I own the Dell U3415W and while it does a little bit of lightbleed in the corners. It really doesn't bother and you can't see it in use.

I picked up an LG 25UM56-P about a week ago for $150. I wasn't even looking for a monitor and just impulse-bought it after seeing a sale on Newegg. It's pretty budget, but I'm happy with it. It was an overall upgrade from my old ~21" Samsung Syncmaster (I can't even find this thing online anymore). The picture quality and viewing angles are better, and it's about the same height, only wider, which makes me feel a bit better after reading reviews of how tiny the screen was and how a 29" was the minimum you should consider.

Still, I feel like I should have done more research and gone up to a 1440p monitor with a higher refresh rate. I wasn't really looking for a top of the line monitor because I'd rather spend that money elsewhere (like a GTX 1070), but I kinda feel like I would be wasting that power. But I think for $150 it wasn't bad at all. I like being able to switch the resolution to 2560x1080 now, but unfortunately, the game I play most at the moment (Overwatch) doesn't seem to support it.

I have had an x34 since December and it's been the best thing I've bought in awhile. The price is high, but it just makes everything better.

Computex begins.

Someone besides AOC better announce a DP 1.4 ultrawide 35" VA monitor with 144hz and g-sync / freesync.

I wonder if it is possible to solve the 144hz issues with VA displays. Super high data transfer rates to the display is nice, but if I understand tftcentral correctly, current VA displays work best at 120hz or below? It is still nice to be able to run 120hz in ridiculously high resolutions, I guess?

Has anyone been using the Dark Souls 3 fixes for 21:9? I'm interested in if they are giving out softbans for it or not. I've only seen a couple of people say that they've been using it for hours with no problems at all.

I played through pretty much the entirety of NG+ with the hex edit, including doing a lot of pvp to get the covenant items, and haven't been banned.

This is sounds great; thanks for letting me know. And I guess, Namco Bandai has confirmed that simply backing up a save allows you to undo any softbans (which really makes the whole system pointless).

That AIO looks photoshopped.

Crossing fingers for a good panel..

Every day I "must" use this monitor at work. Every day (I mean EVERY DAY, NO days off, 7 days a week). I work on it, I play games on it, I demonstrate games on it, I watch people play games on it, for 6 hours each day.

... Then I come home and cry when I want to play Witcher 3 on a 1680x1050 22" monitor.

This is by far far the best 21:9 monitor at the store I'm at. It's absolutely the most expensive, but it's also the one where everything feels just right. The design by itself, the light with the RoG symbol, even the mechanism to move the panel FEELS very well constructed. How much did you pay for it? It's 1300€ here.

I'm slowly being converted to 21:9 but I absolutely cannot afford one. I had trouble for 5 days dealing with the format, but after 5 days using it my monitor at home was the one feeling weird to me.

If I had to throw some bad rep into these monitors it would be that for some games it's weird because there's too much screen estate, I can't explain, it's obviously not a fault of the format, but rather a personal preference. WoW for example just felt off to me, it's a matter of getting used to it as well I guess.

Witcher 3 is quite beautiful on this screen. Also, I'm not sure how this works right now, but upscaling is absolutely wonderful on that ASUS monitor. A GTX 960 obviously can't handle GTA V at that resolution, but setting the resolution at 2560x1080 actually does not make the whole image look like crap. It looks quite decent and well, let's just say a lot of costumers can't even tell it's not at native resolution. Is this an effect of this being a premium product?

Ah well, tomorrow back to using it again...
