3 of the 4 biggest publishers have black leads in their flagship games for 2016

I'm one of those people. Sorry.

Why do the guys keep their sneakers and shoes on when they're fucking? It makes no sense! It breaks my immersion.

:lol wow

on topic:
This is the very first thing i noticed about E3. Didn't want to mention it because i didn't want to put any extra attention on it... lest there be a backlash.

Cross posting because I feel it's important here for other minorities who feel underrepresented.

Yeah...

Tough to talk about.

It's worth mentioning that I feel our rallying alongside the demand for female leads and alliance* with feminism has rewarded us. Other minorities have my full support if they want to use the promising but small influx of more Black leads as a way to be heard and assert their own need for representation.

* I say alliance because Feminism was the other movement that focused on minority representation -- the need for more positive representation of female characters. And while we are both making progress, we're still suffering in representation.

Let's all be vocal about what we want. I got no problem if other minorities want to use the small achievements to their advantage. You got my support.

I'm fine with the protagonists, it's a really cool choice and angle for Mafia and for Watchdogs it's natural. As for Battlefield I'll wait how the campaign plays out before judging the protagonist. Let's say as a German (and I'd guess the same goes for other European nationalities), I was surprised by their choice because America is not the first country that comes to mind when we think about WW1. When you decide on an American protagonist, you might just as well make the choice they did, I don't mind the latter in the least. I'm just sceptical how the campaign plays out and if it's not too focused on the American participation.

I especially like how in Mafia 3 the protagonist's race will play a part in the story + game mechanics. He can't go to the nicer areas of the game without the police giving him shit. It would be awesome if they tried to arrest you for petty crimes that games never ever care about like running red lights or jay walking. Gives the player an interesting perspective on American history.

I just remembered, not sure how many on Gaf care though, but FIFA 17's singleplayer campaign is centered around a black football (soccer) player, Alex Hunter:

If mentioned already, sorry.
Excellent decision to add this singleplayer thing to the game.

And as always they are american. Diversity is not only about the color of the skin but also, culture and heritage.

Specially ironic for Battlefield 1 taking place in French soil and not having a French protagonist.
Maybe we could have a black protagonist from Kenya and the action taking place in Nairobi, that would be something to be excited about.

About damn time! Mafia 3 looking especially interesting due to racism being mechanic built into the game. I hope it's done well so it will make the player think.

Spread the love everyone <3

As a German, I would appreciate a game that features Germans and doesn't involve Nazism, Nazi dogs, Nazi zombies or Ilsa She Wolf of the SS.

You don't think Black American culture has anything to do with Mafia 3 or Watchdogs? From the fashion, vernacular language, music, etc... Although given how much of it has become American culture, I guess you may have a point. LOL

Honestly, I've been feeling like an ass recently because I've been in some of the feminism(?) threads and basically asking 'why can't we combine forces? Not just more women in gaming, but more diversity in general.' The few responses I got bordered on 'I'll always champion womens rights over different races.' It was disheartening, to say the least. I'm still depressed about the responses. Its one thing to not be heard in society, I'm used to that. Its another when you aren't even acknowledged by your peers.

We should unite, let it be about diversity and equality for all who are marginalized. I want African American, Native American, Women, Hispanic, Asian, Arab, Indian main characters in more games in all genres, all over. If we can work together, we can make an impact for everyone. That would be wonderful, a moment of true joy for me.

i dont get why developers dont offer several protagonists to choose from in the first place
say
- one white man
- one black man
- one asian man
- one white woman
- one black woman
- one asian woman
...

why must the player be forced into one character that he/she might not feel comfortable with for whatever reasons?

& on today's episode of GAF remembers...

hey remember the time you entered the "women's teams being added to fifa" thread and asked about boob physics?

OT, yeah, it's great. In two cases it is definitely going to positively influence my purchasing decisions, no lie

That would be great, but realistically getting to that point from where the industry is now would take a long time.

With more people bringing attention to representation though, it's definitely something that can happen in the future

Lord Saladin from Destiny: Rise of Iron (Activision) is black. He's not a lead character since you create one, but he will be the main questgiver. Don't know if that counts.

I added in Destiny and FIFA 17 in a bonus section to the OP. Thanks.

Sorry that happened. There are many who do have the misunderstanding that feminism isn't part of the push for diversity. I truly don't understand why either.

People for diversity absolutely should be united. We advocate as one and that's how we're gonna stay relevant in the media and gaming world. :D

So would Activision be the last big Publisher ? COD might not have a black lead but it has a Latino/Hispanic as a Lead so,

"4 of the 4 Biggest publishers have a Minority in their flagship games for 2016"

No reason why it shouldn't count, I would think ?

As I mentioned in the Fifa thread I feel this is wasted as I suspect most Fifa players simply won't care about this, way way less than the singleplayer part of BF4.

Now what would you guys think if you had a "life is strange" type of game around Alex? Pretty sure it would hit harder.

Is he? His wiki page has him listed as Caucasian.

Though it's weird since he seems to look different at various points:

The Germans need to reclaim Van Helsing and make a monster hunting game in the vein of a cinematic story driven Action Adventure a la Uncharted.

Is that an Exumer - Possessed By Fire avatar?

That's great. As a half-hispanic I wonder when we will get hispanic protagonists. Also, what about mixed races? White+black, black+hispanic, etc.

One step at a time I guess

Edit: I don't think we're going to see Arab protagonists anytime soon.

Luis - Ballad of Gay Tony

All of the GTA IV protags weren't your usual white characters. Niko was a Serbian undocumented immigrant, Johnny was a Jewish biker and Luis was dominican. The 3D GTA always seemed pretty diverse.

This is very true. It's just the gender thing they haven't tried yet. I'm pretty sure they will for the next installment.

Anyways this is cool to see indeed. I think since last year we are really making progress to diversity in games as much as everyone still flips out on GAF. We still have a ways to go but games take years to make and I think the trend is upward.

Really cool that we are getting away from our biases as to which characters are default but I really hope this actually paves the way for developers to just be able to design the characters they want (even white) and black male lead doesn't just become the standard "see, we are diverse" statement and we actually start to see characters from all walks of life.

The games industry wants to be more diverse. Four different publishers start developing games with black male main characters.

Find the flaw :p.

I mean, I'm not being entirely serious here. You also have Mirror's Edge with an Asian female protagonist, quite a few other Caucasian female protagonists and at the end of the day, even though all the games in the OP seem to be ironically homogenous in their approach to diversity, it's still a very welcome step up from what we've had the previous years. Perhaps we can get some LGBT+ protagonists next year ;).

And now I learn FIFA 17 is going to have a story mode.

This... Makes me kind of interested in trying it. Is this why they put story modes in racing games? To get people who aren't just won over by racing itself to play them?
