3DS December Update Detailed

I hope this update allows me to

Rip my 3D bluray > convert it to whatever format 3DS works with > load on SD card > watch Avatar on the plane...

Is this feasible?

But if it isn't built into the OS (which it isn't since it's a download from the eShop), the 3DS won't be able to multitask it like the Game Notes or the Web Browser...

There'd be nothing to stop a firmware updating allowing certain apps to run in the background.

Whether Nintendo will do that or not is another matter.

And which downloadable 3DS apps can't be run at the same time as a game? None, because there are none yet.

The 3DS can only multitask with the 3 apps that are built into the OS at the top of the screen on the 3DS menu. It cannot multitask any app or game that sits as an icon on the main menu (and there is nothing to indicate that anyone can make additional OS level apps. Especially seen as how this isn't being included in the system update, it's highly unlikely that this will change)

What is possible though is that this might use Spotpass to enable people to read messages through the notifications app, while playing a game.

We won't know about anything like this until the update gets here.

For reference, pictures saved on the DSi could be exported but not imported. The same is partly true for the 3DS, except importing is cumbersome. So I don't expect the same level of "ease" in getting videos to work since there are considerably bigger factors to consider when dealing with video files (bitrate, encoding issues, etc.)

And how do you know this? There are 0 apps made for the 3DS. And I don't mean games, I mean small apps like this message app.

But I can remember putting a bunch of 3D pictures on and viewing it fine. I wish this will be the same for the video too... Then again as you guys said. Nintendo... :(

Game or "App" there is no difference. Nintendo Video is an "app", but it's treated like a game. Same goes for Netflix, Streetpass Plaza and everything else that is not directly built into the OS (Web Browser, Notifications and Game Notes)

There's nothing to indicate that this is even possible.

Well, we don't know how the 3D Video app will work, yet.
Theoretically, it's possible. But I wouldn't count on it.

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. If Nintendo wanted it to work, I'm sure they could make it work.

So...I still can't see a friend is online and message them to see if they'd like to play a game?

Don't care, then. Wake me up when that happens.

demos should not be mandatory.
but there should be a standard way to offer them (and keep them on the store indefinitely!!!)

Offering demos is always in the interest of the publisher, unless your game sucks.
If demos are offered for other games, consumers will chose what they can try first.

No need to impose restrictions. Nintendo just needs to provide the infrastructure.

Given how demos were handled on the Wii shop channel, I am not optimistic about nintendos approach for the 3ds.

Well, I don't think that demos on the 3DS will be put up and taken down randomly, and they'll be fore retail games as well as eShop games.
They should be up for as long as the publisher wants them up.

Hopefully...
(and demos should be available in the same place as videos, pictures, descriptions, etc. )

the nintendo channel being separate from the shop channel was mind boggling on the wii.

I think it was because they didn't really have the Wii Shop channel coded right.
The eShop is much better and it allows for much more in terms of what can go on it.

Well, they could have obviously fixed that, but didnt. The 3DS might be a lost cause at this point when it comes to having a competent online by today's standards. But at least every little improvement gives more hope the WiiU will be ok.

Actually, what did the 3DS have on launch that the Wii didn't? I think the Wii actually had more features since it's jump start lol. Not looking good by those standards...

Still getting an error, here.
Seems to be sporadic when you can actually get it right now.

I guess I lucked out somehow. Just finished downloading. Video camera and Nintendo Zone (didn't know about this one) are included. It looks like we're getting this one a couple days early.
