3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

If I go ahead and transfer my data from my DSi to my regular 3DS will it erase everything on my 3DS or just add to it? I want to do this before the XL comes out so I can just transfer everything over once.

Erases EVERYTHING from the source 3DS and turns the receiving one into a clone of the original.

Edit: oh, dsi? Honestly not sure about that. Sorry.

So the inside is matte platic and the outside still is shiny?

I kinda want one but i'm going to wait for an all black version. Your fault, Nintendo!
It looks like a satin finish, which is kind of like matte but with a shine to it (or like matte with reflective/shiny paint basically)...but not "glossy" which is what I assume you mean by shiny. I guess it might be like the GBA SP and original DS finishes, but they didn't have the curves this one has. I'm hoping the color is in the plastic itself and not just a paint.

When I don't like the launch colors I just pick out the best color I can dump on my son after the color I really want gets finally released. I did that last year with the 3DS when that beautiful shiny red one got released in US.

That latest video is so nice and really shows the XL's strengths. Man, I can't wait for this thing. It's gonna be a tough wait!

Can I ask you all a question?

I have wanted to get a 3ds recently as I am taking the train more and more to work. I would also play in bed from time to time. Right now, I think the only games that interest me are OOT and Kid Icarus, possible RE Rev.

The announcement of the XL is kind of what got me into wanting a portable gaming system, but I'll confess, I don't really want to wait, i.e it will be very hard to wait.

If you were in my position, would you hold off until Aug (im in US) or would you get the current model.

Color doesn't really matter to me, if anything i'd go black to be more discrete on the train (I'm 32 years old) plus portability would be nice although I carry a backpack to work.

Right now the 3DS seems to be $170 at stores, but I'm assuming that once the XL comes out, the existing model will probably drop a ton in price?

I feel torn here, but appreciate any advice given.

Thanks.

The regular 3DS will not get a big price drop for some time, it will be sold in parallel to the more expensive XL. If I were you I would wait, as long as you can stomach the hideous launch colours.

It really has become standard for handheld platforms to have semi-regular revisions. There were five different versions of the PSP and four different versions of the DS. The ipad and ipod touch usually receive annual revisions as well.

I would wait simply because a lot of the design flaws of the original 3ds are being discretely addressed with this model. Things like the position of the stylus (which is a huge pain in the ass to reach on the model I have), the self destructing screen clamshell, the poor 3d caused in part to the small screen size, improving battery life a bit, as well as superior design for playing older DS games. The horribly crap start/select/home buttons.. Waiting is hard even for me and i have a 3ds, but really, the revision seems like a really nice upgrade.

Aside those games, also try and consider mario 3d land, star fox 64, and mario kart, at least try them as they are all great games along, RE rev is a good game as well but not the best out there, it's not as good as the other ones you mentioned imo.

Absolutely, positively wait. This isn't a revision, it's an alternate choice, so the original might not drop in price at all. The XL confers a number of advantages over the regular 3DS that you'll probably miss if you don't get them.

Like the others I'd suggest waiting for the XL, it's a bit bigger while the screens are much bigger and only $30 more, and overall looks much nicer. As far as colors I'm sure there'll be some vinyl covers or something to cover the color up if it's a big enough deal (if not replacement shells down the line). I'm thinking red would be more discreet (assuming you meant that rather than discrete) just cause it seems more commonly used, although ultimately either way it's a big slab o' color.

As far as games there's a decent selection of stuff on the eShop too (which is also more convenient to play, no carts!), otherwise there's the whole DS library if you never got into that.

Thank you for your opinions. I suppose I'll try and wait it out. Man this is going to be rough.
edit* thanks Japtor as well.

I don't get this. How the hell are red and blue hideous? And I'm not a fan of silver electronics but even that looks decent. Of course I'm not arguing opinion, but.. It's red and blue. Not like it's releasing in hot pink and browny-green and we have to take a pick.

:o

So also with the free games early buyers got? (edit, nvm. Just got the confirm!! :) )

No white worldwide is a bad move! If you look at the Wii U pad, some people would like it matching, also it's not too distracting

Yes, I think we saw from the hands-on video that the blue and red colors are not the kind of colors we were expecting, they're quite wonderful.

I do agree that white is the way to go for this one, but I'll just wait. I don't think the wait'll be so bad.

There's a hands on video of the red 3DS XL?

I could try this "little" thing yesterday. Really nice, specially its feeling-sense of touch.

We recorded this 3DS vs XL video comparison + hands-on impressions:

Oh, and weight felt almost the same to me!

That was a really good video of the 3DS XL.

Guess I'll be getting the blue one, although I would've preferred just all matte black.

Still can't wait to see that screen in person. Is it August yet?

The colors look nice, it's just the fact that they are mixed with the black that makes them unattractive to me. Silver and black looks great though.

IGN just posted this on their Facebook wall....

I usually defend IGN, but Jesus Christ I've never seen something so horribly misleading. Also the fact how the image on the right has it without the extra pad.

Is it bad that I know this is supposed to be funny but I just don't get whatever the joke's supposed to be?

Yeah, it has a second Circle Pad. Is that the entire joke? Is it the image of Miyamoto holding the XL? I'm sorry, I just don't get it.

there isn't really a joke there. it's just fucking ridiculous that IGN would put that on their facebook. someone might see that and say "oh sweet the new 3DS XL is going to have 2 analog sticks!" when it won't

Okay, let us assemble the clues.

1| The 3DS doesn't have a second circle pad
2| IGN posted a photoshopped image of the 3DS with a second circle pad on their FB wall.
3| "That's the stupidest thing I've ever seen by them. IGN, congratulations!"

With these clues, I am confident you can draw a conclusion.

Oh. I thought they had put it up to be funny, and I couldn't tell if there was supposed to be a joke in the image or something.

IGN just being morons, then?

What?
I meant number of times.
5.
But the system reminds you how many transfer you still have.
The limit is reset if you erase the Account Activity of the unit, but doing so...erases your content and purchases (so you'll lose everything if you reset).

Five is also the limit to full transfer. You can transfer individual content (i.e. games, apps individually) as many times you want.

Link (with more info too).

Damn! Only 5?
Kinda sucks.

Thanks.

Edit: Didn't find any info about the bold on that site.

I thought that games and apps could be transferred with the SD card, so there shouldn't be a transfer limit in place. I'm not sure though, and judging by the number of questions about system transfers, it seems like nobody else is either.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo wouldn't be happy with it.

They are already having a bit of confusion with the Wii U. They shouldn't have to deal with even more lol.
