3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

I don't play my portables outside the house. Headphones are pretty much a necessity, unless I am doing some kind of mundane grinding or non-focused stuff in JRPGs. Most games I have played all sound much nicer with phones than the built-in speakers.

Yes, especially with the 3DS since the speakers on the original 3DS are horrible! I tried using them to play Theatrhythm but I couldn't do it because the music sounded so bad. The bass was really quiet and the sound was kinda harsh. I can't imagine NOT using headphones.
 
i don't normally, no - unless im playing some patapon shit on a plane or something. but im told its the only way to make Spirit Camera and games like that work.

I nearly always use headphones with portables. So much better. I'm sort of an audio freak in the first place, so the fact handheld speakers are so bad is just an extra incentive.
 
No earphones I just hate putting things in my ear. The speakers aren't that bad are they? I mean not amazing but sufficient right?

The problem I've always had with the 3DS speakers is how quiet they are. If you're just laying in bed playing their fine, but if you're out an about you pretty much need headphones.

I personally don't get the speaker complaints. It's fine for almost all play, sure it's awful in comparison to others but it does what it does

The thing with the xl is that it sounds so much better with headphones than the regular 3ds.
I don't know what they did to the sound chip but the improvement is staggering.

I felt it was silly with the GBA, and earlier on with the DS (particularly pre-DSi). I've generally made a habit of it with the PSP though due to the higher sound quality, the DSi for its notably clearer audio, and kept with that for the 3DS/Vita given audio quality CAN be "perfect" now on both.

It must be the equivalent of whatever they did with the DSi over DS.
 
GB games are probably where I won't bother, or for stuff like Pushmo where I just don't care for a short blast. Sound quality on GB games being lower isn't exactly a big deal unlike, say, the aforementioned Kid Icarus.

Yeah pretty much this.

Headphones will get you better sound quality / immersion in almost every case unless you have some garbage stock earbuds or something.
 
most of you guys use headphones or EARPHONES though?

I just ordered some earphones to plug into my ear(entry level high quality though) for at home use with the XL since i really can't be assed to put on my huge headphones and run around the house looking like a DJ just to play some 3DS :( too heavy for prolonged sessions
 
If I want better sound quality I usually just plug in my PC speakers :p Did that all the time with the original DS

I guess the CX300-ii would do, but anything is a notable upgrade
 
45 minutes till i try my local kmart and see who speaks enough english to check the backroom for me, much less if the register actually prints a $20 gaming coupon (god knows ima sound like i made it up if it doesnt).

best buy doesnt even have "pickup from store" option right now, on the day of release. these places make me want to support gamestop more, but they've got nothing for promos on this sadly.

pumped! i *might* pick up NSMB2 along with it... i didn't want to as im getting tired of Nintendo not taking and risks with it, but I know I'll still enjoy it all the same

Try working there. Although I've had mine preordered, we've have them in the back for a week now, just taunting me. But I will buy mine prior to store open since our rep hasn't put up a display unit, and I usually like showing off the new hardware.

this is a pretty fine idea, actually!

just noticed that discover lets you buy stuff from kmart (through their portal) with 10% back, between that and $20 gaming coupon (plus, they're actually letting me order online for local pickup, you incompetent best buy shits), its a no brainer - just bought mah blue.

got my confirmation # and a message "please wait up to 2 hours for your 'ready for pickup' email before coming to the store" oh yeah, that's totally gonna happen

that is not gonna happen

I've done it a few times as well, but I need a longer cord to make it something i'd do often. Also where the hell is the Circle Pad Pro for this thing?

Since i'd love to play some Reveltions raid mode on this thing.


Also if I do plan on upgrading how easy is it to transfer my purchases to the XL?
(I have bought a few games as well as those free games from buying it day 1)
 
From what I've read it appears to be.

I'm picking one up tomorrow probably. I'm a little fuzzy on system transfer. I gather ambassador travels via system transfer option. Do VC saves and Streetpass data (ie: Puzzle Swap and Find Mii) transfer via that or are they on the SD card?
