3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

It's hard to imagine the speakers NOT being shit, but then you'd have to graft very unportable speakers on to truly fix that. So, headphones >>> handheld speakers.

Went to Wal Mart last night and people there had never heard of it. Asked them to look in the back and dude said his inventory people haven't seen it. Went to Target this morning and they said they didn't get any. So, went to Super Target the next town over and they didn't have them out (or New Super Mario Bros. 2), but they had them under the register. Got the hawtness that is blue and currently doing my transfer.

For whatever reason, that one screen that people have been taking pictures of is much more yellow on it, but all the other screens don't seem to show that kind of a difference. Initial impressions of the speakers seem pretty good (not really different than my 3DS). Bumpers on the top screen seem to keep the screens apart, but I am about to go on a trip to Canada with it tonight and we will see if I get any scratches. However, I don't see much of a way that they could rub.

As I was typing this, my transfer finished!!!!

The transfer screen on the target 3DS is supposed to be orange, it's not a screen defect it's purposely orange, the screen of the source 3DS is blue.

just got mine! flawless, no scratches and just about as cool colors as my zelda unit...going to bed now, pikmins can transfer for me when i arise.

had to share this though:

$20 off buying from kmart through discover portal (10% back)
$20 gaming coupon from kmart (thinking about using it for Mario 2)
@ $5 back from shopyourway rewards card

and zelda units were going for $300-400 on ebay last week, so yeah, feeling pretty good about this!

So the only thing I'm checking for before I return it is for scratches and that yellowe screen thing, right?

yup, that's what i checked for - you can just blaze through the setup real quick & change it later (or overwrite it with a transfer) to see the main OS screen too.

Man, I wish we had better colors.

we do; my store had blue

Looks like the Fred meyers chain we have here is offering half off of NSMB2 if you buy a 3DS XL, that's not too bad, I may do that.

holy shit, yeah - that's a good deal, jump on that!

Just opened my Red XL.

Oh. My. God.

This is glorious. GLORIOUS. The look, the feel, the screens. Red looks AMAZING in person. Wow. Just wow.

Exactly how I felt. I got Red as well. ^^

Sucks that I have to still re-download my software. >>; I forgot that all of that was on the SD card so it didn't transfer. >>;

Awesome impressions. The Castlevania delay also delayed my purchase of an XL; that was the main reason I wanted one asap. However I also really want a white one or at least a unified color so hopefully that'll be an option by the time the game does come out which I presume will be as late as March or April next year.

In person, I love the red-black combo. It's very Mario-ish. I wish we had different finishes. This thing is just so darned slippery.

Also gotta say that I love that the stylus has moved back to it's proper position.

Probably the best part about the whole package lol. The rear stylus was horrible.

Just came back from Gamestop.

Don't see any flaws. Happy about that, lol.

My goodness the screens are HUGE. I LOVE IT. Always been a fan of big screens.

Even though I had the OG 3DS, this feels like a whole new handheld.

KH3D will FINALLY be opened and played...AFTER NSMB2 of course.

Enjoy your XL, guys!

what's the cheapest place to pick the xl up? i don't have frys =(

I just called Nintendo to ask for you -

Hi, whats the cheapest place to pick up the new 3DS XL? Im calling for a guy on NeoGaf.

CS (customer service Nintendo name Stacy) - What?

(I repeat my first sentence)

CS - What is NeoGaf, can I use it to get off?

Pardon..

CS - My husband just doesnt cut the mustard, haha, he's a pencil dick

Are you crazy, why would you risk your job?

CS - Sorry, you can buy our new XL at Walmart for 200$ + tax...(long pause)...You piece of shit.

I asked about the cheapest place.

CS - Can you text me a pic of your Genitalia?

*** At this point I hang up. Sorry dude, I give up on your question. I will never call them again.

I realize I may be being a bit hyperbolic here but damn, playing NES games on the 3DS XL is just.. *tear*... it's like I am finally playing a portable NES. The screens are big enough where it actually feels that way. If Nintendo would release SNES days eventually to the e-Store for the 3DS, I don't even know what I would do.

I can confirm this true. I work at Fred Meyer, and then I also get my employee discount. *drool*
Oh, and I'm picking up red B)

With regards to the screen:

- When transferring software, the "sending" system has a blue-tinted screen, and the "receiving" system has an orange-tinted screen. Comparing color temperatures here is bogus.

- That being said, the XL is a bit warmer than the OG 3DS. Curiously enough, the top screen gets a little warmer when the 3D is off. You'd only be prone to notice on the home screen, though. I wonder if this is a power-saving measure?

And a few other notes:

- The plastic is reminiscent of a Gamecube controller on the outside, and a 360 controller on the inside. Feels *real* nice.

- Buttons have the same short throw and click, but are about twice as tall as the OG 3DS's.

- The plastic cut on the circle pad is a little rough underneath. The friction of the pad is a little "sandier". These will probably just need to be broken in.

- The shoulder buttons are still a little small for my tastes, but anything is better than the original.

- Stylus is much cheaper. Gets the job done, I suppose. Doesn't seem like it'll break or anything.

- My OG 3DS speakers were way too "bright" sounding and practically attacked high tones with an axe. That might have just been my system, but I find the XL's more even speakers far easier on the ears.

The Fred Meyers here in Portland, Oregon where I picked up my 3DS XL is selling New Super Mario 2 for half off with the purchase of an XL, so folks who live near a Freddy's may want to call and see if their local shop is doing the same.

Went in and got the XL from Gamestop, talked to the manager about the trade-in, and she confirmed it once again. At home now doing the transfer, will take it back and get my credit when it's done. She said that the payment method used is what's credited back, so no store credit unless you bought with store credit.

AWESOME! Thanks for checking!

Got red B^)

RIP old red 3DS with the scratch on the screens, plus my 3 3DS games I downloaded, heh didn't want to transfer, wanted $100 off right there , paid $112 and going to open it now :D

Got Mario tennis and kingdom hearts waiting for me.

We have a red and blue XL in the house, the blue is much better IMO, I used to have an aqua 3DS wanting to be a bit different but had to get rid of it, the colour just wasn't nice, the blue is much nicer, a dark blue.

Can anyone confirm if the Hori screen protector pack for the XL, comes with two sets of applications, or just one?

Currently transferring my stuff from my OG 3DS to my XL. God, I love Nintendo's XL systems. The bigger screens are so choice. Also, I love how they moved the stylus to the side. That was so annoying on the original! Bottom, home click buttons feel much nice too. Very happy with this thing! After transfer I'm going to head back, get my credit, and pick up my Mario pre-order a possibly two other games. =D

You have no idea how much money I would pay to be able to buy SNES/N64 games to this thing. Is it even possible to get N64 games on this?

Do you count the OoT and SF64 re-releases? Because I'm thinking a proper emulator's going to be too demanding given how each Wii release seems to be specialized.

Just wait till you play Kid Icarus and Mario Kart on this thing, it's like their completely different games, they just play so much better on it, with the bigger screens they take up your entire viewing area, where's before you were very aware you were looking at a small screen with a huge bezel.

This is my first XL system as I didn't pick up the DSi XL. Well, all that I can say is I will not be going back. I can't. Just a world of difference.

yeeeeaaah

Just got home a few minutes ago and picked up a blue 3DS XL... Now waiting for these pikmin to hurry up and move all my data from my system

So far the system looks and feels great, doesn't feel cheaper to me as some have said, feels very solid and the color (red) It'svery nice actually. Both screens are the same temp. And I could actually see the screens and 3d effect in the sunlight haha

Looks much, much better in real life, and feels thinner and flatter than the Og3ds......this is the definitive 3ds.

More pics of the red from you guys picking it up today! Not getting mine until like Tuesday. Will help with the wait. :)

Anyone want to post a screenshot of KH3D running on it?

Even though I've been looking at tons of unboxing vids I wasn't prepared for how big the screen was one I first opened it. Very pleased so far. System transfer is a go.

Just got home and transfered, unit checked out fine, no scratches and screen seems nice. Also GS was really cool and gave me no trouble with the credit, payed in cash and got cash back.

God I love this thing, even my friend who was looking to get an OG 3ds now wants to get the XL.
