3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

I was a little underwhelmed by kid icarus rising on xl. Maybe its because im not used to larger screen yet but picture looked a tad 'washed'. Maybe because its just more noticeable on a larger screen? Dunno

I just finished testing a bunch of games on the XL. Alongside Resident Evil, Kid Icarus looked the best on it. I disagree with your findings ^_^

So GAF, I need some help here.

My old 3DS that I registered in July 2011 (and checked via Nintendo, it has Amabassador status) was destroyed in a car crash in December 2012.

I never bothered transferring my Ambassador status to my OG 3DS. However, I am interested in transferring it over to my 3DS XL.

I registered my old 3DS, so I thankfully have the serial number. I just don't know where I go to transfer Ambassador status without having the physical system.

My understanding is that Nintendo requires a police report to show that a system was stolen (and get you your games back). I'd assume destruction of the system in that manner would qualify in the same way, with a police report.

Damn, Nintendo doesn't play around.

Thankfully it should be easy enough to get a police report of the incident.

You better go warn yourself about this. Bwohoho.. ;)

But yeah, transferring your licenses can be a pain. Call up Nintendo and talk to a rep. You'll likely have to obtain a report of the accident as has been stated. Good luck.

What games have you guys re-played and have been blown away by how much better they are with the bigger screens? Just trying to get some ideas about what titles to pick up that I have already played but put down to early because of the originals tiny screens.

I liked it a lot on my OG 3DS, but Zelda: OoT looks stunning on the bigger screen.

Just completed my transfer process on my blue XL! Went very smoothly. I haven't bothered trying to copy everything from my original 3DS' 2GB SD card to the new 4GB one yet, though, because of all the trouble that seems to be giving people. No worries -- I can always cross that bridge when I come to it. I'm not even close to running out of space on the 2GB one yet, anyway. (Though I might be once Square finishes releasing Theatrhythm DLC...)

Anyway, I love this thing just as much as I did when I demoed it at Comic-Con. DS games look FANTASTIC on the XL in 1:1 mode. :)

Yup, but those are the soft "invisible shield" kind right?, not the hard plastic kind. They produced both for the original 3DS AFAIK. If I'm going to use a soft protector I'll probably use one from Best Skins Ever as I have sheets of their stuff that I cut to fit as needed.

I just trimmed/used one of my spare Vita protectors from the Sony dual pack. I decided, eh, ill just protect the bottom screen, since the stylus will always be jabbing that. Unprotected, they eventually look all scuffed and milky from the abuse :|

Is it that large in person? I have a stuck red pixel on the far left of my screen, and I feel like it's a little smaller than that. I'm not sure if the focus is exaggerating the size.

Stuck pixels are different than dead ones though. Dead ones simply don't show anything and often go unnoticed. Stuck ones tend to display only one color, but sometimes go away (or show up later on).

Yeah the focus might be exaggerating slightly, but its very noticeable. Also I was play KH3D I noticed a white pixel towards the center. Ugh. Its not like this is the first type of XL device Nintendo has made.

I had no problem copying the data on my 2GB card to the 4GB one. If your transfer went smoothly then you shouldn't have a problem either.

2 questions:

Drago: How are you liking the blue after all? I love it more in person, it's so, so awesome looking ^_^

XL owners: Do any of you guys/gals have the slightest of seams where the top screen should connect to the chassis of the system? the right side of my 3D screen doesn't fully sit flush - a slight, slight seam/separation between them. Is this any cause for worry? Dust entering over time, etc...

Just want to say that Kingdom Hearts looks stunning on this.

I did a side to side comparison of the game on my XL and the demo on my OG 3DS. The difference was day and night. Just unreal.

Somebody needs to explain to me why I'm playing PilotWings more than any other game I bought for this thing.

Went to Best Buy to pickup my XL, and they were out of the "free case" to go with them...so they let me pick out any case I wanted. So I picked out the most expensive one, a PDP Pull-and-Go Folio, and they rang it up at .01 cent.

Yoshi's Island looks really nice on the screens. All ambassador games are much easier on the eyes, dont look washed out or anything, and well...just work great. On to DS and 3DS games + ware. Gotta start over from scratch on my downloaded games though, since I cant change my 2GB data to 4GB.

EDIT: Mighty Switch Force looks great, but saves were on the SD card too :( Speakers are decent, not too loud or too quiet on surround for me.

After I picked up my 3DS XL from GameStop I downloaded Netflix and was able to watch Top Gear while at work.

I then bought some Virtual Console games on my break, played some OoT 3D on my lunch, and I am officially in love with the 3DS XL.

How was netflix on it? I want to use it at night in bed, should be better on the bigger screens.

Am I the only one who thinks the circle pad feels way worse than a launch 3DS. My launch 3DS has a really smooth pad, while my XL has a gritty feeling when moving it around. Kind of disappointing because otherwise it's perfect.

Mine was like that the first week or so. After that, I broke it in, and it's really smooth and nice now.

Netflix is pretty bad. The compression is awful. If you have any Android / iOS device, Netflix on this really isn't worth the while. I started up a few movies to check things out and I can't even read the opening credits.

Even on the XL? I think it looks fine on my mom's kindle fire. Of course the screen is much bigger.

System transfer only half worked. None of my ambassador games switched over. Had to go and redownload them all. Argh.

But demo screens are awesome. They look so purdy at 100% brightness but I fear for battery life so down they go *sigh*

Seriously? I watch Netflix on my OG 3DS all the time and the credits are sharp as fuck.

Agreed, Netflix is useless on this thing. If the XL is all you got, by all means go for it, but if you have a Vita, iPhone etc etc lying around, the difference in quality is immense.

Did you switch the SD cards?

DS games are pretty playable when using the original mode (hold start when loading), but...I really dont want to let all that space go to waste. Sucks that they couldnt figure out how to get the game to fill the screen, yet not have the colors appear slightly washed.

Holy crap dude. Just bought Pilotwings last week on amazon, since it was a steal (around $10). I've put more into that game than a lot of the others. It's friggin fun and it has plenty of replay value. Got stars on all the mission modes? Collect stuff in free range... Tired of free range? Three star all your stuff for bonus levels.

I'm about 6 hours in, well worth my $10. The game was criticized too harshly, it's really fun if you're into that style of gameplay.

For $40? Maybe one can by cynical... For $10, pick that shit up...

I finally got to turn this thing on....damn! Playing Mario Kart 7 on it right now I almost don't feel worthy to hold it. It's pretty amazing so far....that screen practically swallows me!

And I am so glad I got to Gamestop early today. I would much rather get Pilotwings than that sub game. Thankfully I got the last copy. Lets see...

Mario 3D Land
Theatrythm
Mario Kart 7
Zelda OOT
Kid Icarus
Starfox
Pilotwings

Now to play them all for real!

Mario 3D land and Star fox look great, my eyes kinda messed up a little when running through that one ghost house that has shadow mario chasing you though.

That's a pretty perfect list, as it's almost identical to my current catalog. I'd traded in Resident Evil Revelations -- good & pretty, but mileage may vary. Just didn't sink in this time for me... Let me know how Theatrythm is, that has potential to be some good sleeper fun. I'm sure you've contemplated NSMB 2 so I won't mention that one but I am having fun with it.

I went ahead and ordered that sub game on amazon. For $10 even if it sucks, it'll be good for some trade in somehow. It has mixed but decent reviews, like Pilotwings did, and I loved Pilotwings.

I just played Pokemon White in 1:1 mode and it looks amazing. The picture looks very crisp and it's perfectly playable at that size. That said, I think I'll play it stretched because I love the size of the screen.

I managed to get it for $5 on that BestBuy clearout sale thing. Steel Diver is meh, but holy hell is this the best $5 I've ever spent.

Also, did someone mention that the XL is sold out of every Gamestop? My self control is failing me as I write "Should have pre-ordered, bro!"

Pilotwings is the sleeper game of the 3DS launch, that got screwed over by its retail price. Had Nintendo gotten the e-shop up at launch, it would have been the PERFECT game to launch e-shop with. $9.99 would have been just fine on there for it.

That'd be the perfect game to get up there. Even at $15 I would strongly recommend it.

I bought this case today with my XL, it works great...

Regarding Gamestop -- I know, right? I'd out of stupid luck got determined enough to decide to preorder an XL on my day off work Saturday. Figured it'd be no big deal, and when I went into Gamestop they acted as such. I preordered Blue.

Then I got like a million phone messages at work today from them. I guess they oversold and panicked since they didn't have any more blue? I called back during my breaks, guess there was a shortage. I ended up with a red, but at the end of the day I didn't really care between blue & red and sorta dig the color. Virtual Boy Red.

Anyway I thought the DPI would bug me and I've only played NSMB 2 so I can't say for sure... but the screen is great and the comfort level is waaay better for my hands. The friggin screens are nice and huge.

Really impressed with my blue XL after hearing a lot of the complaints. I thought New Super Mario played really well and sounded good too. Transfer went great. Larger pixels are noticeable but I can deal. Pretty happy overall. My screen protectors arrive tomorrow from amazon.

So I could transfer my ambassador games to my brother's 3DS, trade it in to EB games for the $60 credit towards my 3DS XL, (or try to sell it for more somewhere else I suppose) then transfer my games back from my brother's 3DS to the new XL right?
