3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Yeah, I recently got some alone time with it (was out at a restaurant) and finally appreciated the increase of size. Looks like I was just so used to my 3DS that I had to compare my year and a half's experience with my 3DS and my day's worth with my XL, which was not fair.

Now i'm much more at ease with my xl :)
 
How did we ever play on those original DS screens.

Played some OOT today. Pretending I'm 9 again. I'm loving the reworked artstyle.
 
So after almost everbody on GAF mentioned the warmer colors on the XL screen I took a detailed look and now I notice it too. I hadn't even bothered to look before. Now I can't unsee it :(

My 3DS decided to die on me today, so I don't know if I want to pay Nintendo for repairs (had the OG 3DS since launch) or give them $200 for the 3DS XL. They quoted me a 'discount' on the repair and I'm still not sure I want to bother paying them to repair it, considering who knows how long I'll have after I get it back. I wasn't rough on the 3DS at all (didn't throw it across the room, or drop it, was very careful with it and when I wasn't playing it, it was being charged), so I'm hesitant after my experience with the 3DS. As far as durability goes, is the 3DS XL better?

EDIT: I realize that logically, it doesn't make any sense to purchase another Nintendo handheld after having my original 3DS crap out. I could very well run into the same problem with the 3DS XL. I also realize this may be the wrong place for this post, so I apologize if that's the case.
 
I was anticipating the XL a lot, but I have to say, I'm surprised at how much I'm loving this system. It looks and feels amazing. Gives a new lease on life for the 3ds games I've ready beaten.

Ah yeah, had a baby recently, so just don't have the time or gumption to go out and take the kinds of photos I used to. I'm still trying to keep up with it all, just a different kind of photography now :). Bought a 40mm Pancake for kicks! (that's what these were taken with).

Yeah, I exposed them a bit higher (bright images always look better for this sort of thing). I lost my GBA SP, but that was close to the original DS, right? Compare the above shot with the original DS. You can see the 3DS XL is darker.

Now I was looking up gun metal gray, and it's hard to really reach a consensus as to what that is, so maybe I should just refer to it as metallic dark gray.

It looks really nice.

Another comparison is Apple MacBooks, which are also closer to the original DS, and brighter than the Silver 3DS XL.

The problem is with metallic colours, even in the same light, you can make them look brighter or darker depending on the angle you shoot them at.

While I'm here, the Aus/NZ box is nice. It's funny, because the 3DSXL takes up so little space with it, with the adaptor tucked in under neath it.

I got a free copy of pilotwings when I bought my 3DS XL and when I tried registering it on club nintendo, it said the PIN has already been used, but it really was new, all wrapped up and everything!
 
So Mario Kart and what not look wonderful on it, but Tales of the Abyss looks blocky. I think Nintendo knows something some third parties don't. D:

Same thing here...Last 'new' copy in the store. Pathetic.

I hate Gamestop (I go there maybe 3 times a year) but I traded in a couple old iPod's (Touch models with 90 min batteries) and managed to get the XL for $19...$16 of which was tax. :P

I use them when it benefits me.

When I went back to talk about the free game they didn't give me, they talked about how they ran out of both steel diver and pilotwings so they just wrote my name down and said they'll call me when they get "a new shipment". -___-
 
I feel like there's not enough shit in the world to throw at gamestop. They truly are the worst video game retailer around, bar none. I know some people have a store they frequent to, and everyone's cool an shit, but MAN. If someone lives in the NW burbs of Chicago, let me know where I can find a GameStop that doesn't make me feel all scummy after I leave from it.

The guys at the GameStop at Halsted and Madison in the city and at the one on Lake Park in Hyde Park are pretty cool.

No. It's a significant upgrade. People complaining about the warmer image quality are, for lack of a better word, ignorant. It looks great, the 3d feels better with the larger screen, and the form factor significantly more comfortable. As practically every review has stated it's far better than the original, but hey, whatever floats your boat. Some people dig tiny screens and hand cramps.
 
I was told earlier on in this thread that Nintendo's officially said that the 3DS XL's warmer screens are normal. Can anyone link me to where Nintendo said this?

Not gonna lie, when I visited NYC, it was nice to have that streetpass surprise when I'd get back to my hotel. Thing is, I'm one of those, game in the bed freaks. The other thing is, my work revolves around going in and out of hospitals. Very little contact with fellow gamers, and since I live out in the burbs, that would require me to visit the mall for potential streetpass hotspots; and I HATE the mall!

Sorry for not posting pictures dude, in case you didn't see my earlier post. My XL screens are warmer. Even though is not enough to bother me. I can't help not noticing it when both systems are side by side.

I think the warmness looks way worse in pictures, possibly partially because it's warmest when you turn off the 3D (and turn on power saving). Turning on the 3D it matches the bottom screen and is only slightly warmer than my flame red 3DS.

I just ordered a blue DsiXL pen and an OG DS thumbstrap/thumbstylus. Both will be so nice, especially the thumbstrap for Kid Icarus Uprising. ^_^

The screen is beautiful. I wouldn't be concerned about a "yellowed" screen.

I'm having kinda a hard time with the sweet spot. It seems smaller than the original, but as with the original, I will get used to it.

Regardless of all the problems mentioned, it IS an improvement, a better system and well worth the price, IMO. The build quality also seems far superior than the original.
