4 Unhealthy Mentalities the Internet Turned into Movements

Actually if you went into the past texting and driving thread, there is no double standard. People on GAF hate it as much as drunk driving.

Did I say anything about "people on GAF"?

If people viewed texting/calling the same way they viewed drinking, it would be illegal in all 50 states with similar penalties to a DUI. Does anyone get their license revoked for texting in a car? Is the ticket even more than a couple hundred dollars?

It's this jump from "Having a margarita with your tacos" to "NOW YOU WILL BE A MURDERER!" that I've always found utterly ridiculous. It reminds me of the anti-drug ads where one day a kid smokes a joint with his friend and the next he's out on the street, homeless with a needle in his arm.

He's out on the street because he had to pay the lawyer exuberant amounts of money to defend him in the serial killing case from drinking and driving all the time.

Relax, have a drink and go out for a drive.

You're all over the place. I consider anything distracting grounds for a ticket at the least but you're actually defending the instance in which people drunk drive despite several other options available. And your big defense is "it's just not fun." Well get drunk at home, party at someone's house, save up for a cab. Hell in this city some bus lines run till 2. There is no real excuse.

The gang stalking thing is just really sad to me. Those people suffer from paranoid schizophrenia and need help but because of the proliferation of the internet and gang stalking communities are just feedback loops for those people. They believe they're being stalked, there are communities of people that believe the same thing so it must be true and they will not get the medication because that's what the government wants.

Also, everyone who tells the victims that they're stupid or paranoid are, of course, part of the gang stalking them. But the victims are too experienced and smart to be deluded, and see through such feeble attempts at intimidation at once.

I can't say that most of that I don't agree with logically

it's eloquent as hell though

Wow, awesome. "I now treat half the human race as objects to be used. I'm a tough manly man now!"

Lol yeah right. It's just a hypersensitive adolescent overreaction to being hurt. That guy either learns to integrate his prior mode with a way of realistically and effectively communicating with women, or he stays in selfish manbaby mode and grows old alone.

At least white knights have redeeming characteristics. The woman hating crowd are just twits in a frustrated rage who still haven't figured out how relationship dynamics actually work.

The drunk driving defense force is ridiculous, but I have to say, the way bars are set up (around here, at least), the existence of bars pretty much actively encourages drunk driving. There are no sidewalks or anything, and in order to go from residential areas to a bar, you pretty much have to drive, or otherwise risk your life crossing a highway. Even if you don't drive and somehow manage to make it to a bar on foot, you're still risking public intoxication. Bars will never be banned, but more needs to be done to make sure bars aren't in an area where the only means to get there is by driving.

I'm not really a fan of bars, the above reason being one of the reasons. In fact, I've never gone to a bar by myself -- only when someone else is around to drive, because there's no way I'm going to just have one drink, and anything beyond that is risky if I'm driving.

It's completely ridiculous that bars can serve liquor until 2am, but someone can't go out to the store after 9pm, buy liquor, then return home and drink it at their place. The fact that bars can serve liquor past the time you can buy it at a store also encourages drunk driving.

If I want to drink a lot and I'm by myself, I simply do it at home.

I wonder how his romantic conquests went after he went into Manly-Mode.

Is one margarita going to put someone over the legal limit? Because that is what drunk driving is.

In the defense of those people when you know friends or family members who have been killed by drunk drivers to hear some people boast about it or defend it is frankly insulting.

This.

PLEASE. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE PEOPLE.

You cause serious and everlasting pain.

the gang stalking thing is a little worrying. These people need help.

it doesn't seem like it would take much to push some of them over the edge.

I have a really hard time watching those stalking videos. It just makes me sad. I've had one day of a paranoid episode and it was lightweight in comparison. This is torture.

He was still out there an hour later, dude, AN HOUR!

Every week when I go to the grocery store there's an elderly man sitting on one of the motorized wheelchairs sleeping. Ever time.

My suspicion is since I go there around the same time every time that he knows someone working there and he's waiting for them or something.

Nah fuck that, he's obviously gang stalking me.

Never even knew gang stalking was a thing before this thread....

It's not a thing, it's real schizophrenia. There are plenty of schizophrenics who don't seek help because they think nothing is wrong with them and psychologists, psychiatrists, doctors are part of the conspiracy. It doesn't surprise me at all that these people gather in an online community.

Game Analyst believes hurting someone else's feelings is morally equivalent to murder.

People often don't like getting clumped in with the most outspoken subgroups.

The reputation of the whole can suffer due to the reputation of the few.

In this way, the snarky atheists can have a very real harmful effect.

So much so that a prestigious, world-renowned cosmologist would fear to associate himself with the word "atheist" because he doesn't wish his message of appreciate for science to be drowned out.

I had a friend who killed himself a few years back, and now when I think about it, he might have believed he was a victim of gang-stalking. He was always suspicious of neighbours, and blocked his windows to prevent people looking in. He even blocked the peephole in his door. He got real nervous if he heard noises from neighbours, or if he went out to the hall and there were other people there. He hated having other cars behind him when driving, and often drove out to the side of the road and stopped so the car behind him could pass. Once, he told me that he hated waiting at zebra crossings because he felt that all the other people standing around were watching him. He functioned well at work, though, and seemed normal when I went out to eat lunch with him. I don't know if he believed in a conspiracy against him, but he used to read conspiracy websites and often talked about things like that. Whatever it was that haunted him, it got so bad that he couldn't take it anymore and took his life. Cases like him and the ones shown in these videos are so tragic, and it seems almost impossible to cure them from their delusions.

Gangstalking reads like something people would latch on to feel self-important about their existence. People around me are going about their business, so they all must be conspiring against me in some way.

Enemy of the State

The Truman Show

The Bourne Identity (kind of)

I think people with paranoid disorder often latch onto films to better manifest their delusions.

Gang stalking just seems like the most narcissistic thing in the world. I'm sure we've all played the "What if the world is like The Truman Show?" game in our heads, but these people honestly think that there is a worldwide conspiracy just to piss them off?

The "Drunk Drivers Should Have Their License Revoked FOREVER THEY ARE UTTER HUMAN GARBAGE" crowd often just strikes me as basement dwellers or teetotalers who have never gone out and had fun, and are just looking for a way to harshly judge those that do.

Go to a bar. Look around. Almost all of these people are going to drive home after a couple drinks. Probably all of them will be utterly fine, causing no injury to themselves or others. I just hate the attitude that drunk driving is some activity only for the utterly irresponsible scumbags of the world, when practically everyone does it sooner or later. If you haven't done it, then chances are your mom or dad or friends have. Nobody wants to call a cab because they had a couple margaritas at the mexican place after work.

Texting or talking while driving has been show to be as dangerous or more dangerous than drinking.....yet you see none of the same indignation there, and people have pretty violently fought legislation to prevent it.
Ding ding.

And God help you if you try to explain there's a difference between having a beer or two and being drunk. They have no context. We have adults making points taught to them in D.A.R.E. in drug threads for God's sake.

I don't feel like I'm defending anyone to point out that People who drink and drive are not insidious inveterate alcoholic monsters -- they're your friends, neighbors, and family. If you took away all their licenses permanently because they had wine with dinner then you'd have a shitload less people on the road.

I think you (the general you, not the specific you) do your own cause a disservice when you deliberately hyperbolize so frequently. There are people here carrying on about funerals and death and murder in the context of a margaritas with tacos outing. When people see the obvious dissonance between the reality and the nightmarish pictures painted by the anti-DD zealots, they end up discounting their point altogether. It's the same with the anti-drug movement -- when a kid does a couple bong hits and realizes that it's not going to fry his brain or make him rape somebody, he thinks he's been fed bullshit the whole time and keeps on taking drugs anyway, ignoring that there are actually good reasons not to smoke pot.

The hard line stance I see here just does not track with reality.

Is a glass of wine with dinner going to put you over the legal limit? Serious question.

It is hard to think of many things more harmful than a celebrity scientist declining to publicly self-Identify as an atheist.

Will a couple margaritas with tacos put you over the legal limit?

I'm going to have to agree with blame space here.

reddit.com is an echo chamber/circle jerk of intolerance and idiocy when it comes to religion. They are no better than the extremist conservatives who shove religion down your throat every other second. It's ironic how they criticize religious people for worshipping Jesus Christ because they practically kiss the ground Richard Dawkins walks on. I'm an atheist myself, but I don't need to proudly proclaim it to the world and have people pat me on the back for it.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is people like them give Atheists a bad wrap.

What a faulty analogy. So people who drive drunk do so because they believe the stats to be bullshit just because they've been lucky enough not to wreck? Oh jeez. Let's rationalize all risky behavior like that.

Nope. I'm not friends with anyone who drinks, and definitely not anyone who drinks and drives. I'm fine with those who drink and drive receiving a harsh penalty. Permanent loss of license at the minimum, but I'd be comfortable with execution.
