I feel like I say this a lot in these threads, but again, what does it matter? How did the internet get her father's phone number?

Thats true, but I would argue thats not the current gamer culture. There are people who play games whenever they can, and then there are "gamers" who make the millions of horrible comments on youtube, send death threats to devs, were/are those shitty online kids whose only babysitter was call of duty, and people who use the word "beta" to describe characteristics of people unironically. That's one aspect of it. But It's also me, my siblings and friends hanging out talking about games or meeting up online to play some. We're all middle aged gamers with kids. We game with each other and our kids and always have.

To put the word "gamer" into perspective...
This is a motorcycle enthusiast:

This is a biker:

The degree to which you let your pastime define your identity is what separates a "game enthusiast" from a "gamer".
Has anyone actually criticised the journalists Zoe Quinn allegedly slept with to allegedly get good reviews?
My understanding of how corruption works is that generally the person who accepts the bribe is considered as morally culpable as the person that offers it.

Hmmm.... I take it that you are saying that the biker is a bad person? Your example makes no sense in the real world. The person with the "rocket" may actually spend more time and money on their hobby than the "biker." I think you need to use a less hateful comparison that does not rely on unfair social prejudices.
what I find odd is people had forgot this, that's the way the internet moves frankly. She is not the most hated person on the web, that's some hubris right there to think humanity gives a shit who she is.
This is nothing more then a deliberate attempt bring more attention to herself, kind of shows her arguement up.

people are horrible, it's not just the internet. The internet just gives people a way to be more horrible without facing the consequences of being horrible IRL.

Yet many people claim to be gamers. Go listen to the Iwata "I am a Gamer" GDC speech. Everything we do defines us as a person. Also, what is wrong with letting your actions, the people/things you like/love, and your friends define your image? You're trying to make "gamer" a slur in your example. Don't do that. Just state that people shouldn't be assholes to each other. Don't disparage an ever increasing amount of people because of a dozen or so assholes.Did I say all gamers are bad people? No.
I was was saying the definition of a gamer seems to be based around how much the person lets it permeate their identity.
I'm sure there's plenty of gaming enthusiasts who build $2000 PCs, because they can, but they don't let it define them as a person.

I probably spend more money on retro games and have a much larger collection of retro imports than many self-described "gamers", but I would never identify myself as one.

That just come off as horrible. Don't end horrible.
But what's the difference? To me, gamer means "is into games". I had never considered this term to mean "considers him/herself a game-playing entity first, and then a person".He gets it.
I've been playing games for 25 years, and I have a moderate sized collection that I'm proud of, but I don't identify as a gamer.
This may be shocking to you, but gamers as a whole are not a bunch of sexually repressed and angry nerds sitting in their mom's basement. The community is quite a bit more diverse than that.
Yet a person who plays games is a gamer or a game player. You may just be acting slightly pretentious because you might perceive that "gaming enthusiast" is a slightly "higher" and more "elite" sounding term.He gets it.

Hey, just so you know, you're victim blamingwhat I find odd is people had forgot this, that's the way the internet moves frankly. She is not the most hated person on the web, that's some hubris right there to think humanity gives a shit who she is.

What I find odd is that people like yourself enter a conversation and proudly admit that they didn't read the article the conversation is about by making assertions like this.what I find odd is people had forgot this, that's the way the internet moves frankly. Yep. Just like everyone that watches a film is a cinemaphile or anyone that listens to music is an audiophile, right?

Edit: auto correct changed be to end.

That's true for me as well, but still, before this particular scandal I thought "gamer" was as harmless as "cinephile" or "bookworm". It's news to me that "gamer" now means "game-playing entity whose personhood revolves around this hobby".because, while i enjoy video games, they are not a defining characteristic of my personhood.
Again, that's new to me :/I guess it gets the same stigma as an otaku... a real obsessive person that only does one thing and one thing only.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=otaku
And my point went over your head.
A person watches a movie is a movie goer or a viewer. A person who listens to music is a listener. The term cinephile or audiophile is usually reserved for a critic or producer. Again, bad example.
I'm saying that gamer is not a slur and it is just silly to pretend it has to be one.

Lmfao. The gay agenda is so efficient even homophobes support marriage equality nowYou're misunderstanding me COMPLETELY. What i hate is that politics are in my games. I don't hate gays i'm not against same sex marriage or anything at all.
"Gamers", who took ownership of the term, have let "gamer" become a slur all on their own.
Some labels tend to define the more extreme of a group.
Cinephiles and bookworms also tend to be viewed as more intellectual than someone who lines up to buy the latest Call of Duty at midnight.
This doesn't really contradict the idea that they're comparable terms. People who have an interest in [hobby / medium / etc.]Cinephiles and bookworms also tend to be viewed as more intellectual than someone who lines up to buy the latest Call of Duty at midnight.

They really shouldn't mean anything else. And as far as I knew not that long ago, they didnt.
Holy shit will you people just read the article and stop claiming that she is calling herself the most hated person on the internet to revel in attention and stay in the spotlight?
I don't really mind this. I honestly think I'm a gamer because I'm into games, and that's it. I have other interests as well, and I wouldn't be offended to be called whatever term means I'm into animals, languages, history, etc. They absolutely are comparable terms. I'm just saying that some terms are viewed with more esteem than others.
Again.. You are stereotyping and that may not be helpful to civil discourse.Cinephiles and bookworms also tend to be viewed as more intellectual than someone who lines up to buy the latest Call of Duty at midnight.

Title of the piece lays the foundation for the article. That's writing 101. Also add the opening paragraph what advertises who she is and her game(including links). I Stopped after that because she explained herself perfectly in a few lines.
Cinema and literature are experiences that are easier to share without such a high bar of investment too imho. For example, I love Japanese 2D shooters, they're like my favorite genre of game. I'm not going to be able to pop in Mushihimesama Futari and expect, say, my girlfriend to derive the same sort of enjoyment from it as I do. the barrier of enjoyment is far too high for a mere observer. However, if I show my girlfriend Goddard's Breathless, chances are she is going to enjoy it without having an encyclopedic knowledge of cinema.
You're selling your girlfriend short. My partner picked up multi-uniting in Wonderful 101 over the course of one playthrough, and she'd never touched games before dating me.
That said, if she really did cheat on the guy I don't blame him for flying off the handle with some huge revenge post. I wouldn't react like that personally, but it's a painful position to be placed in and people react in different ways. Did she ever address if that much was true or not? Because this article kind of seems to gloss over that aspect.
I've been cheated on, and it hurt like you wouldn't believe, but I dealt with that shit in private.
Two things:
1. The only people who would even care about someone else's sex life are those who have none of their own.
2. Anti-feminists are all absolute assholes. All of them. To believe it's wrong to be proud of being a woman, or to try to shame a woman for being outspoken and strong is just pathetic.
There are so many actual evils in this world to focus on. If these (obviously intelligent, on a purely intellectual level) hackers and shit-smearers would put this much energy into solving some actual problems, this world would be a much better place, instead of the place extraterrestrials drive by while shaking their heads.
