Absolutely fantastic book. I guess it's five books technically, but I'll count it as one here since that's how I read it. I went into it blind, knowing absolutely nothing about the story, and fell in love with the world and characters. Now I see there is a set of prequels books which appear to be great as well, so I've already ordered the omnibus version. Can't wait to continue!

So far my favorite in the series if they keep getting better and better like this I'm really looking forward to the other books.

New book:

[*] American Gods by Neil Gaiman. ★★★ -- This book felt dense, given that it's only 500+ pages in length. There were entire passages dedicated to historical/apocryphal recounts of the settling of America, and my interest really waned through those sections. The strongest elements were the characterization of the protagonist, the personifications of the various gods, and the general darkness of the setting. I wasn't crazy about the dialogue in general, and several scenes came across as downright annoying. All in all, this didn't live up to the hype I've heard about it, but it was still an enjoyable read.

New book:

[*] Ten Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew by Ellen Notbohm. ★★★★ -- Very informative and uplifting read about interacting with, teaching, and supporting a child with autism. The big focus is on unconditional love, understanding the areas where an autistic child struggles socially, and how to deal with simulation overload and language delays.

It's been two months since the last time I finished anything (although I'm somewhat close on a couple of books I've been reading), but I finally went out and saw Iron Man 3, which I thought was incredible. One of these days I'm going to have to start watching some more movies if I want to actually reach 50 this year.

New movie:

[*] Dredd. ★★ -- Really poorly cast and executed, laughably simple and generic plot, and cartoonishly over the top villains. I actually might prefer the Stallone version, and that's a scary thought.

After yesterday's Fast & Furious marathon, I'm at 145 movies for the year. I'm gunning for 500, but 365 should at least be attainable. All 145 movies are feature length, no shorts.

Oh and I've read 1 book.

Jack Reacher was a competent and well made action movie, but it won't ever be remembered by anyone, including me.

The Zombie Survival Guide was great for the first half, but then quickly ran out of steam and became quite a chore. There really wan't any need for the lengthy section on historical zombie outbreaks. I found that section completely boring and nowhere near as clever as the author thought it was. The survivalist section at the start though was very good and quite funny.

 • Indie Game: The Movie (2012, dir. Lisanne Pajot, James Swirsky) - ★★
 • The Great Gatsby (2013, dir. Baz Luhrmann) - ★★★★★ - I'd like to compare Luhrmann with Zack Snyder. Great directors with great sense of style. This talent is mostly wasted on boring movies. But, if you give them a source-material they really understand, like Watchmen, they make great movies. The Great Gatsby is the not only the only Buz Luhrmann movie I like but it's also the greatest movie I've seen this year.
 • Only God Forgives (2013, dir. Nicolas Winding Refn) - ★★★★ - I dig the mood and tempo it's building. The foreshadowing is strong with this one as it spins a surreal classic tragedy. Most movie-goers will most likely have no clue what they're getting into.
 • Chronicle (2012, dir. Josh Trank) - ★★★★ - A fun and creative spin on the superhero concept. I like it and it feels authentic.
 • Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 1 (dir. Jay Oliva) - ★★★ - I've never watched the animated series and I never dabbled in DC's comics. I plan on reading some, though. It was fun but I didn't get too much out of it. All good though.
 • Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011, dir. Rupert Wyatt) - ★★★★ - A really good movie and a great companion-piece to the original. Franco seems a bit lost at times but Serkis keeps things grounded.
 • Carrie (1976, dir. Brian De Palma) - ★★★½ - Holds up surprisingly well. Well directed and suspensful.
 • Silent Hill Revelations (2012, dir. Michael J. Bassett) - ★½ - Silent Hill is one of the great horror franchises that noone does anything inspired with. All the wrong people have been involved with it since after it left Team Silent. It's almost as if... it's... haunted!!!
 • The Dead Zone (1983, dir. David Cronenberg) - ★★★ - A fun little movie exploring a supernatural phenomenom. It's what you expect. It's aged a bit but it still brings it home.
 • The Dictator (2012, Larry Charles) - ★★★ - I have to admit I laughed. I laughed alot more than I thought I would. It's good and it gets its point across. Very, very childish and stupid, and I applaud the movie for it.

TV
 • True Blood (Season 5, 2012) - ★★½
 • Game of Thrones (Season 2, 2012) - ★★★★

 • Hemlock Grove (Season 1, 2013) - ★★★½
 • Spartacus: Blood and Sand (Season 1, 2010) - ★★★½
 • Girls (Season 1, 2012) - ★★★½
 • The Walking Dead (Season 2, 2011-12) - ★★★★
 • Mad Men (Season 4, 2010) - ★★★★ - TV is really eating up more of my time and I can't really blame it. Netflix is addicting and Mad Men is the perfect vehicle for it. Awesome pacing, great acting and strong writing all make for one of the best series ever.
 • Arrested Development (Season 4, 2013) - ★★★★ - Thank you Netflix. If you keep on producing these quality series (and reviving murdered series like Arrested Development) I'm going to keep throwing money at you.
 • Game of Thrones (Season 3, 2013) - ★★★★½ - HBO knows how to make good TV and I keep on gobbling it up. The season felt cut off, though, and the ending didn't feel like a proper season finale.
 • The Walking Dead (Season 3, 2012-13) - ★★★★ - It's still good. But, I recently found out that the comic just keeps on going. Like with Lost I'm feeling that they need to explain things soon. Without some sort of closure this series is just going to get worse by the season.

 • Little Inferno [PC] (2012, Tomorrow Corperation) - ★★ - From the creators of World of Goo comes nothing at all. Well, you drag stuff that you buy into a Little Inferno and burn it. Burning specific things together creates combinations. That's about it.
 • Thomas Was Alone [PS3] (2012, Mike Bithell) - ★★½ - Half of it is interesting and the other half is just a drawn out. The narration is cute but doesn't really do anything. The thing that's really wrong with it is that it's boring.
 • Proteus [PC] (2013, Ed Key & David Kananga) - ★★½ - I get it... I think. It's an audio-visual exploration of something like the four seasons. A meta play on life: there's really no interaction except to sit down and watch the beauty of it all. But do I think it's good? No, but it doesn't have to be. It's unique and interesting. If that's your thing.

★ = Bad, ★★ = Okay, ★★★ = Good, ★★★★ = Very good, ★★★★★ = Brilliant

New book:

[*] Shadows Linger by Glen Cook. ★★★ -- Book number two of the Black Company series. While not quite as memorable as the first, it still sets the stage very nicely for the next book. I'm really enjoying Cook's writing and the characters he's created in this world.

It's been a few weeks since I updated. I've had a lot of family functions and things going on. I've gotten a bit behind on books, but I'm currently juggling three at once, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol. I and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for my book club and An Autumn War by Daniel Abraham as personal reading, all of which I'm half-finished with. I expect to finish the first two in a few more days anyway.

Books

16. Welcome to the Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut ★★★

This is a collection of Vonnegut's short stories I read for a book club I recently joined. They range from love stories like Long Walk to Forever, quasi-autobiographical anecdotes like The Hyannis Port Story, and typical Vonnegut sci-fi/satire like Harrison Bergeron and the story that gave the collection its name. It's my least favorite Vonnegut book so far, and many of the stories are easily forgettable, but the better stories in the collection equal his brilliant novels. My favorite story is All the King's Horses, a chilling suspense thriller about the dehumanizing effect power has on those who are both objects and wielders of it.

Movies

70. Trollhunter ★★★

I don't normally like these cinema verite-style horror films, but this was amusing. Had a rather abrupt ending though.

71. Neds ★★★★

Brilliant British indie film about how society's broken institutions forces a thoughtful, sensitive boy from the wrong side of the tracks into a downward spiral of violence and depravity.

72. Indie Game: The Movie ★★★

Documentary which follows the trials and tribulaons of indie game makers, focusing on the creation of Fez, Super Meat Boy, and Braid. I'm very biased towards this material, because I enjoy these kinds of games more than the AAA Call of Dutys and Halos that dominate retail, and I found the story of the making of these games fascinating.

73. Falcon and the Co-Eds ★★

Cheesy old movie about Falcon investigating a murder on a women's college with a ridiculous hypnosis angle tossed in.

74. Catch-22 ★★★★

Solid and pretty faithful adaptation of one of the greatest, if not the greatest, war stories ever written. It's not as good as the book, of course, but it's a good film in its own right.

75. The Lady and the Bandit (1951) ★★★

Fun little movie about the exploits of British highwayman Dick Turbin, in the vein of other "lovable rogue" characters like Zorro and Robin Hood which were very popular at the time. Nothing special, but an entertaining 80 minutes.

I've got about 12-14 hours of flights + layover in the next week or so. Grabbed all of Ian Fleming's Bond novels. Should be good fun.

Thought that Perks of being a Wallflower was rather boring. There wasn't really anything new to the story.

Didn't you feel infinite though?
