AndyD

aka andydumi
I think I am stepping out of the challenge this year. The twins were born a few weeks ago and I won't have time to read or watch movies for a while.

Congrats!

I think I may try to step back into the challenge. I am way way behind, but that's just extra motivation to do my best. The twins are doing well and recently sleeping through the night, so I can read at night! And I am not keeping track of movies because we watched a lot while home on paternity leave and we still watch a lot now that we can't go out much, so I am probably near or above 50 already.

AndyD - 7/50 books

Books:
The Historian, Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Gone Girl, The Physician, Baker's Daughter, Elizabeth Street, Moneyball

I'd never read anything by Guy Gavriel Kay before, and I'm not really sure why, but that's definitely going to change now. The Summer Tree was fantastic, leagues better than most else I've read lately, and it surprised me how easily it grabbed me. I was tempted to re-evaluate my previous reads as a result, but decided the scores were true enough at the time - it will doubtless influence my opinions from now on though.

Currently Reading: The Wandering Fire (Guy Gavriel Kay)
On Hold: The Count of Monte-Cristo (Alexandre Dumas)

Another quarter has come and gone. It's inspiring to see some of you guys already nearing or passing the challenge. I'm sitting well above pace on books, but the movies have been the real challenge like I thought they would. In a few weeks when we settle into our new home (hopefully), the wife and I are going to have to go on a film spree.

My top book for the second quarter was Glen Cook's The Black Company, well deserving of the ★★★★★ rating I gave it. Cook is an amazing writer, and his characters are so dang fun. This book is heavy on dark military fiction, gray lines between good and evil, and humor among comrades in arms. Highly recommended.

My top movie for the second quarter was Chasing Ice (★★★★★), a fascinating documentary on our rapidly waning glaciers. The science has been in on global warming for some time now, but with this movie you can actually visualize the massive impact that humans and our carbon footprint is causing.

Thanks tragi.

Op is out of date. I suppose now that I'm here I might as well do half year update at the end of July.

Good luck everyone. It's nice to see so many familiar faces.

Yeah, xyla popped in a few posts back and said he was going to get it caught up to date. It's a lot of work tracking so many people's lists.

One thing I'd like to see is organizing the initial list based on completion numbers...maybe most total completed, then most books, then most movies. Several different ways to visualize it. There are also lots of folks who signed up but went totally inactive.

I'll PM him to see if he wants help, since I really enjoy doing that sort of thing. If anyone has other ideas, that would be great.

Normally, we just go back a couple of months. But if someone wants to go back six months, it would obviously be the superior list of records. By all means go for it, if you think you are able to. Or anyone else for that matter. ha ha!

I just watched another film, and I started a second book. Will update in the standardised format asap.

Okay, with the first half of the year wrapped up, I wanted to do an update to help Xyla out. I set everything up on Excel file to track overall progress, statistics, etc. Xyla is free to place this in the OP at his earliest convenience. If there's anything else you want to see tracked, let me know.

Nice work! Which reminds me... I need to update! :p

You would have been sitting pretty in third place on the books but you blew it! ;) I'll get you updated on the next pass over. I'll probably stick to monthly updates, since that's will prevent it from being as overwhelming as this one was.

---

New book:

[*] Chad Johnston - Nightmarriage ★★★★ - Written by an old college friend, it's a humorous look at marriage and becoming a parent. Plenty of humor throughout.

No worries...I love all things stats and number crunching. Xyla may have had the data in an easily digestible format, but pulling everything off the OP and then updating manually was a giant pain in the butt. I've got it all saved in Excel now, so it will be easy to do future updates.

And yes, some folks on here are absolute beasts. I'm most impressed with the 115 books, though. Makes me wonder if someone on here could hit 365 in a year. A Slate contributor did it, but that was his full time job. His method was to juggle 5-6 books at any given time then cross them all off the same day. Seems more difficult that way, but I guess it breaks up the monotony.

Looking into my crystal ball, I'm predicting 11 people are going to complete the challenge. If you weigh the books more heavily than the movies (and it makes sense to do so), that number jumps to 14. I hope lots more prove me wrong.

Some people don't update regularly enough till the end. And some people speed up towards the end. I can't remember how many finished last year, but hopefully we beat last year's total.

Thanks Tragicomedy for this great summary! I can't imagine how much work that must have been. I really need to update too in the next couple of days. Just started my 29th book yesterday evening. Unfortunately I haven't seen any new movies but since I already watched 40, I don't worry about that :)

New movie:

[*] Knuckleball! ★★★★ - A fascinating look at the most interesting and despised pitch in all of baseball. I was a huge fan of Charlie Hough as a young boy, and even though I no longer follow baseball very closely, the concept of a pitcher completely baffling a hitter with a 60-70 mile per hour toss still amazes me. The movie focuses mainly on Tim Wakefield and R.A. Dickey, at opposite ends of their careers. I knew next to nothing about Dickey before watching this, but I'm now a fan.

New movie:

[*] Bull Runners of Pamplona ★★★ - Available on Netflix, this is an interesting look at the yearly running of the bulls in Spain. It focuses mainly on the history behind the event, the "old guard" that has participated for decades, and the dangers of the event. As it has become an even bigger tourist draw, overcrowding makes the event even more treacherous. I learned that the race ends up in the bullfighting arena, and in the evenings the bulls are fought and killed...never realized that before, and it removes some of the allure for me.

I need to start reading again. <--- Still true. I always do that. I get these spurts where I read like a maniac and then don't want to touch a book for months.

New movies:

[*] Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope ★★★½ - Really enjoyable look at the cross-section of people who attend Comic-Con. I was a bit saddened to see that comics are becoming a bit of an afterthought in the event, but that makes perfect sense. The vast majority of the guys who work for me love the Avengers movie, but haven't read a comic in their entire life. At some point in my life I'm going to attend one of these things and drag my wife and son along. Seems like a ton of fun.

[*] Broke ★★★ - Fairly harrowing look at how frequently professional athletes go bankrupt after retiring from sports. As a microcosm of our debt-loving society, these guys play out a financial lifetime in 2 to 3 years and oftentimes are left with nothing to show for it. Pretty superficial documentary, but it says enjoyable enough.

 • Drive (2011)
 • Safe House (2012)
 • Skyfall (2012)
 • The Watch (2012)
 • Jack Reacher (2012)

Again, when time allows, I'll add a quick opinion of each new movie and book I am discovering. What I'm finding already is that I tend to enjoy the same books and movies multiple times, but I haven't spent nearly enough time selecting something I haven't picked up before. Great challenge we have here.

New Movie: Stolen (2012) - 1.5/5 Stars

Nicolas Cage plays a father with 12 hours to save his daughter who is kidnapped for a $10 million ransom. It's basically just Taken put through a dryer. The movie boasts hazardous editing, a laughable script, lukewarm performances, formulaic music, and very obvious direction. Remarkably, I feel less intelligent having seen it. After 20 minutes of watching I knew not to expect innovation or greatness, but I was deceived into believing I'd be entertained. I was not entertained. In fact, the only item which kept me from hitting stop was a unique ability for the movie to outdo itself with cheesier and cheesier dialogue. I don't really know if this movie is intended to be an action flick or a thriller, but it did serve as an almost satisftying B-grade comedy for me.

Perhaps the greatest tragedy of all is the sense that Nicholas Cage is on autopilot. Cage is one of the most innovative actors of our time, and he ought to be considered in the ranks with the best of them.
No, I'm not kidding.
In this movie, however, you can't help but sense that he is terribly bored. His usual relentless commitment to character is seemingly absent. Also, his performance is almost subtle. Not subtle in a I'm-exploring-another-possible-method-of-expression-in-acting sort of way, but subtle in a I-couldn't-save-this-movie-if-I-tried, but-I-desperately-need-a-paycheck, so-I'll-just-half-ass-this-one sort of way. I will remain patient with Nicholas Cage--though most others have written him off--because I've seen his better work. When he's really swinging, he's unmatched in his ability to display inner turmoil. I do hope he can get over this low point soon though, because I don't know if I'm willing to sit through another one like this.

Due to studying and a vacation there isn't much to update even though I was gone for a whole month (felt even longer). Highlights of the last quarter are, well, highlighted. As far as movies are concerned it was a close call between Key of Life, Silver Linings and Seven Psychopaths. For the books I was thinking about choosing one of the Garret P.I. books at first, but as much as I enjoy them (Old Tin Sorrows being my favorite so far) I thought that when it came to being a page-turner Leviathan Wakes won easily.
As to the other stuff I watched I have to say that I didn't really like Les Miserables. Beasts of the Southern Wild was good but the boiling hate against the father I sometimes felt dampened the enjoyment a little bit.
