Starting off slow with books again. To be fair, It's hard for me to juggle a lot of writing prose and verse, with reading novels again at quickened pace. I like taking my time and have to get back in the reading for long stretches phase. An hour a day isn't going to cut it.

And I just realised that Redwall is actually a 21 book series.

It's been a while. Time to update the list.

Azrael - 23/50 books | 88/50 movies

Books

22. An Autumn War by Daniel Abraham ★★★★

Third installment in Daniel Abraham's excellent fantasy series. Like A Song of Ice and Fire, this series serves up political intrigue and moral ambiguity with little magic or supernatural elements, while each book returns to a group of central chracters after 15-year gaps as we see them grow form children to old men and women. In An Autumn War, the tension between the City States of the Khaiem and Galt in the background of the first two books takes center stage in a great war in which it is never clear which side is right, and both sides pay an enormous price.

23. Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight ★★★

Thriller about a mother investigating her daughter's apparent suicide at a prestigious private school in New York City. It was entertaining, but several of the plot twists towards the end were ridiculous, and the ending is anticlimactic.

Movies

84. The Skin I Live In ★★

An art house B movie. I was expecting a smart thriller, but what I got instead was laugh out loud silliness.

85. Much Ado About Nothing (2013) ★★★

I've watched Firefly and his movies, but I'm not a huge Joss Whedon fanboy or anything, so some of the fan service of seeing a bunch of actors and actresses from Buffy and Dollhouse doing Shakespeare was lost on me, but a fun movie and a good adaptation of the play nonetheless.

86. The Amazing Spider-Man ★★

I don't like the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies much, although Spider-Man 2 was decent, and I didn't like this one either. It was too soon for a Spider-Man reboot, and it felt like they were targeting a teen audience to the exclusion of older geeks with this one. A comic book movie for kids who like Twilight.

87. Pacific Rim ★★★★

A damn fun summer action movie if you don't think about the silly plot too much. I'd rank it better than all the summer movies I've seen with the exception of Star Trek Into Darkness.

88. Lolita ★★★

I should preface this by saying I haven't read the book. Creepy and filled with lots of humorous innuendo and a great performance of course by Peter Sellers, but held back by Hays Code censorship.

New book:

[*] Ben Fountain - Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk.

Easily the best book I've read all year, and I've read a bunch. As a military member who has served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, I've got to say Fountain really nails the dynamic of how surreal it feels to return home. People always thank you and congratulate you for your service, but it's not something that feels right to be thanked for, if that makes any sense. People want to touch you and be associated with you in hopes of something rubbing off on them. Truthfully, most of the guys I know who are combat troops carrying out offensive operations are hesitant to call themselves heroes, or necessarily be proud of all their actions. War sucks, and folks who have experienced it don't understand some of the bloodlust that civilians get.

It seems I never got into comics despite me thinking so. Really crappy editing though as the movie felt twice the length it was.
  • Elysium (2013, dir. Neill Blomkamp) - ★★★½ - It's good, sometimes even really good but most of the time it feels too short. It's biggest flaw is that it isn't as flawless as District 9.

  • Mad Men (Season 5, 2012) - ★★★★ - Just when I thought that this series had become predictable, boring and never going anywhere unexpected they just went and shook it all up. Great entertainment.
  • Dexter (Season 7, 2012) - ★★★½ - It got better! Last season made me stop watching but season 8 being the last I decided to plow through. After two mediocre-at-best seasons they finally made it enjoyable again. Let's hope they can keep it up and wrap it all up nicely.
  • True Blood (Season 6, 2013) - ★★★ - Certainly not as good as the first couple of seasons but certainly more watchable than the previous season. It starts off at a low-point and builds up. And a really nice build-up for next season.

  • Tiny Wings [iOS] (2011, Andreas Illiger) - ★★½ - Tiny Wings is fun the first couple of minutes but then it just never amounts to anything.
  • Tomb Raider [PC] (2013, Crystal Dynamics) - ★★★★ - I had a blast. Combining what I think are some of the best aspects of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Max Payne 3 to make a really good Tomb Raider-game. Easily the best Tomb Raider since Legends (if not counting Lara Croft & The Guardian of Light, which was awesome too).
  • Sid Meier's Civilization V: Brave New World [PC] (2013, Firaxis Games) - ★★★★ - Making cocaine even better. After having gotten Pedro and Dandolo out of the way and trying out the new culture I can safely say that this game will most likely be the game I play the most this year.
  • The Last of Us [PS3] (2013, Naughty Dog) - ★★★★½ - As good as they say. Blends narrative and combat in a way most gamers and game developers never thought of before. Can't wait to see what they do next. Hopefully it's something new.
  • Kentucky Route: Zero - Act I [PC] (2013, Cardboard Computer) - ★★★½ - It's effective. It builds just the right amount of tension and oozes of creativity. Looking forward to the coming acts.
  • Kentucky Route: Zero - Act II [PC] (2013, Cardboard Computer) - ★★★½ - Keeping the inventive adventure genre alive. Some really interesting scenes. Can't wait for Act III.
  • FEZ [PC] (2013, Polytron) - ★★★ - It was good. At times there were glimpses of something more than that but it never amounted to anything. As it stands it's a good game with some bright spots and some serious problems with pacing.
  • Shadowrun Returns [PC] (2013, Harebrained Schemes) - ★★★★ - If there's one real critizism against it it's that there isn't more of it. I haven't poked around the editor yet but the main game is a well-written, tight little thing that ends on a high-note and leaves you wanting more.
  • Dishonored [PC] (2012, Arkane Studios) - ★★★ - lt's good, not great, and there's a lot of heart. At times you feel like a refrigerator and at times you feel like the world's greatest assassin but mostly you're just trodding around looking for the markers. It ends a bit suddenly.

★ = Bad, ★★ = Okay, ★★★ = Good, ★★★★ = Very good, ★★★★★ = Brilliant

  • Fraktus - Das letzte Kapitel der Musikgeschichte

Yendi was alright, though I liked the first book better, this one took much longer until it got started and then it was over rather quick.

Django Unchained was really good though all in all I would put it in the lower half when ranking the Tarantino movies. While Christoph Walz was awesome ( kind of ridiculous that this was considered a supporting role) I thought that Jaimie Foxx was rather bleak. The Soundtrack however is absolutly great, something that I missed in Inglorious Basterds, which was the better movie though.

Fraktus is a fake documentary about the fake band Fraktus, supposed founders of techno. It was absolutly hilarious at times.

Still without internet at home (moving sucks!), so I've been reading more at nights.

Two new books:

[*] Jim Butcher - Fool Moon ★★★ - Still not entirely sure how I feel about the Dresden books after finishing the second one. They are entertaining but seem fairly generic in characters and story. I remain unconvinced that Butcher is a good writer, although this one was an improvement over the first in that regard. My biggest issue so far is...I don't like Dresden. He's a rather annoying character, too savvy of what's going on at all times, too prepared to face any challenge, and too freaking lucky.

[*] Neil Gaiman - The Ocean at the End of the Lane ★★★ - Pretty depressing freaking book. Lovely imagery and writing, but I expect that from Gaiman. I loved the protagonist and some of the supernatural events that surround the story. My biggest gripe is it's somewhat of a tweener novel. I feel it needed to either be cut in half and made into a short story, or even better expanded out another 100 pages and more fleshed out. There were a few jarring transitions and I think the story got trimmed too short.

I'm kind of a slow reader at the moment, but I hope I can finish a few books on my vacation. And I'm a little bit disappointed that I only read two books with more than 500 pages this year. But that's going to change soon because I bought the third part of Shadowmarch by Tad Williams a few days ago. Can't wait to start it. And The Passage by Justin Cronin is still waiting to be read.
Normally - as before 2013 - I don't watch that much movies, but since the challenge I'm slowly catching up on some older films. E.g. I've never seen Mad Max before or Spies Like Us. And there's still a long list of movies I still haven't seen. But I think since there are only two more films missing, I'm going to concentrate more on reading in the next months.

I'd recommend not giving up on the series until after you read the next one, because book three is basically where the series really hits off. If you still don't like it after that, the series is just not for you.

Sounds good, I'll give it one more shot.
I'd recommend to keep on reading too. For a series the first book is quite weak - the second one is better but the series starts to get really good around the third or fourth book. So far I think that every new book is better than those before it and I just finished the fifth one. I hope you're going to enjoy the series after all!

I was a bit disappointed by the new Evil Dead movie. I don't know what I expected but I thought it would be at least somewhat scary.

Hey Guys, What's going on in here? :)

Big Thanks to Tragicomedy, I just didn't have the time in the last few.. month (uh, I guess) to set aside an hour or two dedicated to updating this thread.
Something always came up. It should be a bit quieter for the rest of the year though, so that's a plus.

Almost there. Hopefully I can cross the line before I start school this month or if not be really close.

Two new movies:

-The Adjustment Bureau: Interesting ideas concerning free will are proposed, and it's a unique blend of romance and sci-fi, but ultimately the story doesn't have quite enough conviction for the film to be truly stellar. That said, the leads' performances are quite good, and they have a great chemistry between them which makes it easy to care about them and want them to prevail.
-Equilibrium: There are elements of classic sci-fi with a bit ingenuity in the treatment. There's also plenty of spectacle in the unique method of gun fighting used by the Clerics. I don't really understand why, but this movie elicited a very uncomfortable response from me. I was anxious while watching it, and I couldn't subdue the feeling. That said, I am glad to have watched it. I don't know if the movie lives up to its intended message, but the effort is much appreciated.

I have a couple more books in progress, and I'd be much further along if I hadn't started watching Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis.

New movie:

[*] The Bourne Legacy ★★★ - It's a shame this was A Bourne film, since everything in that department feels shoehorned in. The film starts off way too slow and doesn't really pick up for over an hour. That said, it's an interesting action movie with a few fun scenes. They should have titled it Outcome and called it a day.

New book:

[*] Terry Pratchett - Pyramids ★★ - I have no love for this book, which was easily the worst Discworld book I've read so far. I get the extended metaphor about religion and resistance to change, but all the humor and the characters feel totally flat for me.

Yeah I wish they wouldn't have even made this part of the Bourne franchise - that way you could go in with lower expectations and you don't have to try to understand why its a Bourne movie (because the connection is rather tenuous). I think this movie would've been better as a stand alone. That being said, I really enjoyed it starting at the point where
Treadstone starts killing off everyone and they attack the cabin with a drone.
From there on out its pretty damn good. But before that, not much is happening.

New movie:

[*] Lincoln ★★★★½ - A nearly flawless movie. Once again, Daniel Day-Lewis solidifies himself as the greatest actor of the past 25 years. Sally Field was also excellent, and seeing Tommy Lee Jones ham it up as Thaddeus Stevens was a blast. I appreciate that this film placed the 13th amendment in the foreground ahead of the Civil War, since that runs contrary to basically every other Lincoln film I've seen. The only negative is you get that occasional Steven Spielberg preachiness that bleeds into all of his films.

New book:

[*] James S.A. Corey - The Butcher of Anderson Station ★★★½ - An introductory short story to the Expanse series, which introduced the character I'm assuming will be the protagonist in the series. I haven't read a military space opera in a long, long time, so this is just what I needed to wet my appetite for the rest of the series. I'll be tackling everything in succession. If the writing style of this is indication of what's to follow, I'm going to really enjoy the ride.

Aaaand the movies are done. Now I have to get my books back on track, since I've been slacking the last weeks.

Ace Attorney was alright, considering. I would have wished for a bit more of the whacky humor, but I can see how the games would be challenging to make into a movie.

Oz was rather lame in my opinion. The thing is that though I think that James Franco is rather likeable, he is just a bland and boring actor. And the story constantly circling around him being oh-so-charming to every woman he meets was rather annoying after the third time.
