Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
Under the Dome (2009)
Author: Stephen King
Rating: ★★★★
It was a pleasure to read. It has been a long time since I read something as pulp as this. And I do have a weakness for it.

Some at-the-edge-of-your-seat writing combined with just the right amount of cliché mixed in. This is the same kind of writing that made me enjoy Steig Larsson and The Da Vinci Code but here it's dealing with my favorite subject: science fiction and human nature.

One month left for the TV-show and I'm really looking forward to it. Had no idea why I hadn't heard of it earlier but it's on my radar now. This really adapts well to the tv-series format and hopefully it's as good as the book.

Only God Forgives (2013)
Director: Nicolas Winding Refn
Rating: ★★★★
I dig the mood and tempo it's building. The music really stands out but it's something to be expected from Mr. Winding Refn who seems to really build his movies with music as unique as the visuals.

The foreshadowing is strong with this one as it spins a surreal classic tragedy. Half-way through I really started feeling for the Devil. He likes his karaoke and spending time with his family while the guy we're rooting for deals in heroine, prositutes and illegal boxing. And here the devil is, stuck between western criminal influence which have hardened him to the point of inhumane cruely and the law which he gladly ignores for a higher purpose. He's not out to forgive.

Most movie-goers will most likely have no clue what they're getting into. The cruelty in some of the scenes are not for the light-hearted. Even I looked away when they cut the guys eyes. But all-in-all a really good movie that stands out.

Books

17. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain ★★★★★

Another book club selection, I think I was assigned this in grade school, but I don't think I actually read half of it, so I'm counting it on the list. A classic children's story that casts a satirical, but loving gaze upon the good-hearted but ignorant folk of the Mississippi with humor, adventure, and brilliant observations of human nature and adolescence.

18. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Volume 1 by Alan Moore ★★★★

My first graphic novel of the year. I had been an avid comic reader for a few years in high school but lost interest when I went to college. A book club I joined reads a lot of comics, and I'd like to get back into reading them again, and it will help me get to 50 books this year too. I'm reading Volume 2 now, and then it's on to Marvel 1602 by Neil Gaiman.

This is a really fun Avengers, Justice League style superhero team formed of 19th Century literary characters like Dr. Jekyll, the Invisible Man, and Captain Nemo, and was a great reintroduction to the world of comics.

Movies

76. Adventureland ★★★

Comedy about set in the '80s about a college grad who hits hard financial times and spends a summer working at Adventureland (Kennywood) to pay for grad school. I'm very picky about comedies and this wasn't my cup of tea, but there was nothing I could find bad about it either. It didn't leave much of an impression on me at all.

77. Star Trek Into Darkness ★★★★

I never got into any of the Star Trek TV series, but I really like the two J.J. Abrams star Trek movies, accessible as they are to a non-fan such as myself. Maybe this is Star Trek lite and the hardcore fans are divided about it, but this is exactly what I'm looking for in a summer movie. There were a few minor plot points that weren't explained as well as they should have been, but otherwise you've got well written characters, a solid plot that is fairly straightforward to follow and doesn't require an encyclopedic knowledge of the series history to follow, touches of humor, and exciting action sequences.

Saw this as part of a japanese movie festival. A great and funny movie that even though its overall plot was predictable still had its surprsing moments. It apparently won something like the japanese oscar for best screenplay.

I'm still not sure if I should use the possibility to count books with more than 500 pages as two. Is it ok to decide at the end of the year? So far it looks like I may achieve the goal of 50 books but you never know :)
From the new books I really liked Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, even though I sometimes was a little bit annoyed by the way the main character behaved. Gone Girl was a great book I absolutely enjoyed reading. There was one twist that really took me by surprise and this doesn't happen often. Just finished World War Z yesterday evening and I'm still not sure what to think about it. It has great ideas but I found out that I don't like books without a main character.
About the movies: I liked Les Miserables - I'm always impressed how good some actors can sing :) And the other movie that standed out was Forbidden Planet. Even though it's from 1956 I never saw it until a few weeks ago when a friend recommended it to me.

Books

19. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Volume 2 by Alan Moore ★★★★

A retelling of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds as a superhero comic. I enjoyed this one a bit more than volume 1 because of the team dynamics and stronger character dynamics, whereas Volume 1 spent a lot of time just getting everyone together.

Movies

78. Cronos ★★★

Guilermo del Toro's first film. It's not up to the standards set by his later work like Pan's Labyrinth, but it's a decent take on the vampire genre.

79. La Strada ★★★★

My first Fellini film. A tragic love story with strong performances from Anthony Quinn, Richard Basehart, and Giulietta Masina. I was most impressed with how, despite my hate for Zampano, I also came to pity him for his self-destructive behavior, and the purity and innocence of Gelsomina and its inevitable destruction by our cruel and cynical world, is heartbreaking and profound.

New book:

[*] Punisher (2008-2010 series). ★★★ - Decent, but didn't meet my expectations. The Frankencastle ending in particular strayed way too far from the reasons I like the character in the first place.

Sorry I didn't update the thread in such a long time. The last few weeks have been rather stressful, but I should be able to make a proper update in the coming week.

20-21. Doomsday Book by Connie Willis ★★★★

First novel in Willis' series about time traveling Oxford historians. It's a 20-year-old book, so its vision of the future can be dated at times, but its anachronisms are charming in a way, and its depiction of medieval society is in turns touching and horrifying. This can be an extremely dark book, but very funny as well.

Movies

80. Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret ★

More Lifetime original movie trash. I didn't have a choice as to watching this. I was vaguely familiar with this story from The Daily Show, and it's a reminder of why I never watch TV "news."

81. Sweet Music ★★★

Forgettable, silly '30s musical without much plot, but it was entertaining.

82. Man of Steel ★★★

It's getting mixed reviews, but I thought Man of Steel was pretty good. The beginning jumps around too much and was pretty confusing, and the explanation of his powers requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, but after the origin bit was out of the way, it gets much better. I think Superman can be pretty boring as far as superheroes go, but the focus of his alienation from both humanity and his own kind was an interesting take on the character. Great action and effects too. A better comic book movie than Iron Man 3.

83. Mama ★★

A decent premise for a horror film, but it never lives up to its potential and falls apart by the end.

New book:

[*] Shadowland (2010 series). ★★½ - Read the full miniseries event, to include the tie-ins. Like most Marvel crossover events, this one was very uneven from issue to issue. I struggled to get through all 29, even though Daredevil is my favorite hero. About the best thing I can say about this event was Daredevil's all black suit. Top class.

New movie:

[*] Chasing Ice. ★★★★★ -- Mesmerizing and terrifying, this is the film to see if you remain skeptical about climate change. Some of the most beautiful imagery of glaciers ever recorded steadily disappearing from our planet forever. If you're a Netflix subscriber, I highly recommend you give this a view.

New book:

[*] The White Rose by Glen Cook. ★★★★ - The conclusion of the first Black Company trilogy, and what a way to go out! This has been one of the most enjoyable series I've ever read. The plot itself is full of adventure and dark humor, but the characters are what make these books so special. The physician Croaker is way up there on my list of favorite book protagonists.

New book:

[*] Legion by Brandon Sanderson. ★★★ - Short novella about a schizophrenic man who relies on the talents of his other personalities to solve things, in this case the search for a stolen artifact. Well written and good science fiction plot, though at 89 pages I wish it were more fleshed out.

89 pages should translate well into an 89 minute hollywood movie :p

Now reading:

  • Jim Butcher - Small Favor

I'm really enjoying The Dresden Files. I bought number 2 to 6 at a library sale back in 2007 and read all of them then, and I have no idea why I've never read any of the others in the series. Glad I've started again!

The Secret of Chimneys is probably the worst Christie book I've read, apart from The Big Four, but at least the latter had Poirot and Hastings going for it. Quick read, though.

I really liked Star Trek, it was good fun.

I didn't think I was going to like Before they are Hanged as much as I did because I didn't really like the first book in the series. The characters became much more likable this time though. I still don't like his writing style very much and most of the setting is just Fantasy 101 stuff. Some of the names are laughable and really border on stupidity.

I have moved on to Gulliver's Travels as I would like to start exploring some of the older classics rather than my usual diet of predictable fantasy. Plus, I need to try to up my reading rate as I am going to fall woefully short of the 50 book target.
