$500 cans on, this is how you dream right - Official Headphone Thread

I'm looking for a mid-range (around $100) set of bluetooth over-ear headphones for use while practicing on the golf range and the gym (mostly lifting, not much running lol). Can anyone point me to some good options?

My next purchase, sometime next spring, will probably also be an open can. Have the HD600/650 and the X2 on my watchlist, all 3 of them seem to be pretty universally praised. Anything else to look out for? Something that might go well with my FiiO E9 or so?

Back to the present, had my ADL H118 for a week now, sadly my time for intensive listening was limited, but I'm nonetheless quite pleased.

Sound:
Overall relaxed an slightly warm. Has some emphasis on the upper bass range, but nothing that really gets in the way of the mids. Great stage for a closed can, good resolution, really solid sound all in all. Doesn't quite keep up to speed in the low range on faster hardcore songs or speedy hip hop beats, but that's the one thing the TMA-1 really excelled at, so it might be a bit of a biased initial impression. The H118 certainly works better with progressive or classical music, not so much fast aggressive genres. Also had a pretty good boost in clarity, detail and soundstage when amped through my E9.

Isolation:
Well above average. Don't have to listen at high volumes to drown out trains and traffic. Leakage is zero.

Comfortability:
Their build might not be for everyone. The non-oval shape fits my ears pretty tight already, and I have smallish ones. And the clamping force is pretty strong, which is also the one thing that still makes me think about returning them. But I'll give them another few days, maybe it gets better or I feel more comfortable with it.

Other stuff:
They fold nicely and the case is sturdy. 3m-cable is odd, considering they are advertised as portable (I think?), but well, cablebinders help. Cable is detachable, but the XLR-connector makes most of my old cables unuseable. They look pretty good and their overall build is solid.

Sorry if I misuesd any term, I'm still not quite there yet when it comes to describing headphones and their sound impressions.

And thanks for the recommendation, the ADL H118 are a great pair of cans and I might even prefer them to my D2000. Still, I need to think about the clamping a bit more (I will use them daily for 3-5 hours after all) and a few more tests in terms of faster music might also help in deciding if I ultimately end up keeping them as well.

Just wanted to say that these were some incredible impressions and an overall great writeup. Not enough people come back and tell us what they thought of their pickups and posts like these are such a fantastic contribution.

Holy fuck yo, HD800's! And all that gear. Adopt me.

Anybody have a recommendation for a cable for the HD598s, preferably with an L shaped plug?

And just for audio cables in general. My Amperior cables are both quitting on me, and I need some longer ones for my receiver.

LCD3s are the eye catcher for me.

yeah was going to go with the LCD X but the LCD'3s had the same sale (10%) - and it was worth going for a couple of hundred extra to get it. All up i got the HD800s for $999USD and the LCD3's for $1750USD.

The cable was $168 - now i think ive tracked down the amp in singapore and someone can pick it up for me from close to retail price....so in the next 3 weeks i should have it all assembled!

I just looked up the LCD 3's. Wow! Serious shit man lol.

Basically, if you look up the "top audiophile headphones" in the world - it usually boils down to the following:

Sennheiser HD800
Audeze LCD 3
Stax SR09
beyerdynamic T1
Grado PS1000
Fostex TH-900

If you get one of those, you should be fine. However i think the "cheapest best" or best bang for buck headphones are the open backed Oppo PM-2. Absolutely fantastic set for $700.

Everything is g̶r̶e̶a̶t̶ fucking amazing but don't you want to upgrade that USB-Cable to really fit with the rest of the kit?

You are easily throwing out 30% of the SQ with that thing :p

edit: accidity aside, why not get something handmade by Ghentu?

That aside, my own experience with customs has been pretty frustrating if I'm being honest. In both cases, I had issues with the fit that necessitated sending the customs back to the vendor in order for them to shave down the shells bit by bit til it approximated a fit I was "okay" with. And although I'd sent the UERM back twice, it's still not quite perfect, which resulted in me taking a file to the shells myself since the whole endeavor felt like the blind leading the blind. Not really UE's fault, as they were more than eager to work with me, but I was still losing time and money on my end sending the phones back and forth. The end result was that, even though it's a product that's been custom molded for my ears, I find silicon flanges FAR more comfortable in use.

That's too bad. I assume you have used the customs for a fair amount of time, right? For me, acrylic shells are often a little uncomfortable for the first 2-3 weeks. Probably some combination of the ear getting used to it and the shell absorbing some oils from the ear. Silicone can be a little more forgiving, but the options for places that make silicone shells are much more limited.

As for me, I don't ever see myself going back to universals any time soon, even though I still have a box with about 25 different pairs in it.

I can get the Sennheiser HD598's for $186 on Best Buy. I have a $200 gift card. Should I do it, or throw a bit more cash in and get something better? Has to be on Best Buy, also I want over ear.

I wouldn't, but it's they're pretty good headphones. You're really limiting yourself by having to stick with Bestbuy. I mean the HD598 were just $100 and then $120 on some sites after. Out of principle I wouldn't be willing to pay full price.

If you're looking for open headphones best buy also has good prices on the

Beyerdynamic DT 860

Audio-Technica ATH-AD900X

If you're just for looking headphones they have really good prices on the AKG K545, Sennheiser Momentum (Over-Ear), and V-Moda XS

Get 595s or 598s elsewhere. Best Buy is overpriced.

That said either of those should be just fine depending on what you're used to.

Hmm thanks guys.

These are for work, so I want to limit any sound leak if possible, and I know I could do better on Amazon, but I'd like to get something solid but be able to use that $200 I have since money is tight otherwise. Right now I have the V-Moda M80's which I like, but they hurt my head after an hour or so, and I'd like over-ear headphones.

I'll look at what you linked, let me know if you have other suggestions for over-ear, low sound leak headphones on Best Buy. Best Buy does sell through their "marketplace" now too, so even if they themselves don't offer it someone might.

The Senns are not designed to prevent sound leakage but I have never had any issue with it. I often use them while someone in the room is sleeping and have never had a complaint.

Different topic: If I want to get a high end set up going, is it ok to use a Mac? (let's say a new iMac). Or do I need a PC so that I can choose a particular sound card.

I've had the ES5 for more than 2 years, and the UERM I've had for about 4 months. So yeah, no stranger to customs. It's funny cause I was actually really considering the Legend from Earwerkz (in spite of all this hassle) til a friend told me it was more of a down sloping take on neutral. The UERM actually winds up sounding much more open even though the Legend's got 7 or 8 drivers going for it. Funny how that works. He also told me that Peter at Custom Art/Lime Ears can reshell my UERM into either a universal or a silicone CIEM.

Both sound pretty appealing. I hear silicone has crazy isolation and the shells should feel far more comfy. I dunno, I might go either route in the future. Next on the agenda is FAD's Heaven VII tho.

My centrance dacmini just stopped working and I don't know why:/ need the OPPO now!

Most music producers/DJ's uses Macs so you should be fine. Even with a PC+soundcard you will still need an amp(depending on the headphones of course)

The Momentum on-ears are going for so cheap now on Amazon and I'm really tempted, but I'd just be buying a pair for the aesthetics...they sound horrible. Recessed mids, boomy bass and sharp treble ugh, but such a nice-looking headset.

hmm I'm not aware of any good alternative at the same price range/capabilities of the Sony Gold wireless, there are the Astro headsets but they are expensive
I'm looking for something of the sort as well, not necessarily at the Gold's price. I see there are Turtle Beach as well, how do these compare to the Astro?
Also, is it better to buy the set (and thus get wireless headphones) or buy something like the MixAmp Pro and use our own pair?

Zero Carbo Basso or those new RE-300H.
The Audio Technica ath-im70 would also be an excellent choice for those genres especially, but if you have small ears the comfort will be a problem.

Thanks for these recommendations. The RE-300H looks the most intriguing to me, I'll be checking them out soon.

Now i'm stuck again. Can't decide between the HD280, XPT100, and the Sony MDR7506. They're all around the same price too. I listen to mostly rap and house music, which ones should I get?

After three years of pretty good use, my OE2's left ear is going out (where the cord connects) and I'm looking to replace them.

I'm looking at the HD 239's from Sennheiser. Anyone have a pair and what's the general impression of them.

I've been very happy with my previous Sennheisers (PX 100 and PX 100ii), which is why I'm going for Sennheiser again.

Wow, nice purchase, one question though, why OPPO Amp ,,, I went to a High End Audio show last week to try the HE 560 and OPPO PM2 out, the HE560 is great, the PM2 running from OPPO Amp/DAC - not so much. The test track was Don't Know Why by Norah Jones and I can't pin point the problem, either the headphone fault ( tried the PM1 once, didn't like it either but PM2 supposed to fix the problem) or the DAC/AMP fault. The vocal was wayyyy off and sounds weird, give it to my friend to try and he had the same impression.

how much is your budget? Golds are pretty good even at full price

Were the OPPO cans running on balanced inputs?

The ha-1 has had very very good reviews and I trust OPPO digital since I have the bd105 player and it is very good.

Do you know better amps for a similar price? I mean around $1200 or so with balanced inputs? I'm still shopping so am open to recommendations.

Also perhaps someone can help. The power supply for my centrance dacmini now doesn't switch on and runs very hot. Does that mean I need to buy a new power supply? Its a chord with a brick like the xb1 type. Will that be universal or proprietary?

Hmnn if you are pairing with the HD800 then i would suggest the Schiit Ragnarok, it receives like ... universal praise on changstar ( founded by veterans who are fed up with headfi nonsense). You can do the Rabbit mod 3.0 for HD800 to improve the sound also. The problem is you will need another DAC unlike Oppo and its 500$ more exp :/ The ragnarok can power almost anything under the sun though so there is that ...
You can check this review out

There are a few more comparisions in the forun as well, most of them are with the HD800
