Gyp in boardwalk deserves the Emmy over the supporting performances in breaking bad this season

Jesse and Mike were nothing special in season 5 part 1

I disagree in that Aaron Paul was fantastic in "Buyout", which is what he submitted. In that episode, he went through more emotional range than he's really given in one episode in the series, with anger in the intro with Todd, sadness in the news report scene, and humor in the dinner scene. It even gave us this!

Not saying that he should be a clear winner or anything, just saying that Aaron put good work in the limited appearances he had in Season 5, pt 1.

These awards should set some records of some kind.
Cranston needs to win this year to tie for most Best Actor, then win again next year to beat it. If Paul wins, he'd have the most Best Supporting Actor (he's already tied.) If John Hamm loses, he'll have the most Best Actor nominations without a win. If Mad Men takes best drama, it'll hold the record. Mad Men's record of most nominations without a single win is no longer in jeopardy, as American Horror Story won one of its 17 nominations.

Kind of pulling for Kerry Washington a little.

"Yeah I'm definitely going to skip the penultimate episode of Breaking Bad tonight and watch this instead"

Yup, poor scheduling there.

Hopefully BrBa will bring home everything. But if it doesn't, here's hoping that House of Cards gets some in as well.

I actually agree about Aaron Paul. The first part of Season 5 didn't give him a lot of stuff to work with compared to 3 and 4. I don't think anything he did in this half was worth winning again. Now..the second half of Season 5 has some of his best work to date.

I would like to see Jonathan Banks win though.

I don't think Hamm is that great. I've actually thought him losing at the Emmy's every year was spot on. He didn't deserve it over the others.

the guy who played Russo on House of Cards didn't get a nom? He was more impressive than Spacey, I thought, but he doesn't have star power I guess.

I think he is (and has been) more deserving than Cranston. Even when the quality of Mad Men has dipped, he's remained excellent in my book.

You are crazy. Unless you mean for this season he's nominated for, then I would agree. The first half of Season 5 didn't really give Cranston or Paul material to be a guaranteed win. But overall, Hamm has never been close to Cranston, nor has the character of Draper been as good as Walter White or even Brody (Season One of Homeland).

Hamm is a very good and consistent actor. But he's never been above and beyond the best in this category.

I like Cranston a lot (it's pretty hard to dislike him lol) but I find Walter White to be a little too caricature-y and over the top to be as compelling a character or performance as Draper or even, dare I say it, Brody. (And agreed, S1 only lol) It's definitley a very show-y performance. My stance on Walt is a bit like DDL in There Will Be Blood, which I also don't love as much as everyone else, I suppose.

Looking at all of the drama nominees, I'm just now realizing that we truly are balls-deep in quality dramas these days. I have no problems with any of the nominees and would be happy if any of them won.

I'd be fine with Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones or House of Cards winning, but not Downton Abbey and especially not Homeland.

What season of Mad Men is nominated? This past season? Or the one before that? I always get them mixed up (the award season deadlines mess with my head).

Looking over the nominees, I actually think Hamm IS the best nominated this year. Although I didn't like this season of Mad Men.

Do shows often win the same award two years running or is it a similar situation like when they saved all the oscars for the third LOTR?

Because I could see BB missing out on it this year and definitely getting it next year

I think Walt's characteristics in the first half of Season 5 was over the top (as was kind of the point). But I don't really see where you are coming from with the rest of the seasons. I think Walt is a very measured character, and a lot of his acting is very subtle and incredible. Walt does absolutely have those over the top moments (like Crawl Space), but those moments are totally earned, and I don't view them as cartoony.

I also feel the complexities of Walt, and his growth and change over the seasons is why he's a vastly superior character to Don Draper. Draper has gone through changes, but the writers keep circling around the same things with him, and there hasn't been anything really new with his character in the past 3 seasons. Walter feels like a much more living/breathing character, whereas Draper feels more stagnant in comparison.

Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister is considered a supporting actor? wha.

I think everyone other than Ned is considered a supporting role, there's just so many stories going on
I do hope he wins though

I'm predicting at least three jokes about people tuning in/out to watch Breaking Bad during the ceremony. One at the beginning noting that viewership probably just dropped, one in the middle for people tuning in during commercial break, and one at the end welcoming everyone back to the broadcast.

No Emmy (nomination) for Tatiana Maslany is a crime.

On the one hand, yes, on the other hand I bet half the people voting thought her accent was real and occasionally forgot all those characters were the same person acting against herself. She's amazing in the roles, but she's so good and the show is put together well enough that it's not really attention-grabbing. Plus GoT is occupying the 'genre TV we're willing to acknowledge' spot right now.

Award shows are circle-jerks by octogenarians whose influence on the industry is often more constraining than enabling.

But I'm still watching. So, I guess that says something.

I'M FINISHED!

Um exCUSE me Sakurai but CLEARLY the best choice for Smash Bros would be my fav niche character HOWEVER you are clearly INCOMPETENT and
Cable is continuing to curb stomp the Networks in drama. I am glad the Emmys acknowledge the brutality.

What I want to see: 30 Rock and Breaking Bad cleaning up.

What I'm afraid I'll see: House of Cards winning a bunch of stuff. Girls winning anything.

Scandal and Parenthood are significantly better shows than S2 Homeland or S3 Downton Abbey. So, no.

Haven't watched Scandal, but Parenthood always gets overrated by critics who feel the need to talk up something on broadcast. It's worth watching but often pretty flawed.

Two shows that don't even come close to what cable has to offer doesn't change my opinion.

Eh, I don't necessarily see it like that. That's not the list I would've nominated for best dramas, but if we're going to use that list, Scandal and Parenthood are easily better than a few of the series on there. It's not even a competition.

I would also put Parenthood as one of the better series on the air right now that often flirts with greatness. I don't know if that makes it "flawed", but it's extremely well made and acted and knows its voice.

A few points here -- there are a lot of shitty cable shows. I mean, a ton of shitty cable shows that are as bad as their network counterparts. When we're talking about the highs, I think it would be daft to argue that cable isn't pumping out better dramas than network TV at this point. That doesn't mean that we should ignore the shows on network TV that are stellar.

And yes, Scandal and Parenthood are stellar and probably better than a few of the series that were nominated. Lumping everything in as "network TV is shitty" or "cable TV is fantastic" loses the nuance of reality and generalizations don't really help make a compelling argument.

Why would either of those things be a bad thing?

Girls season two was significantly worse than an already pretty bad first season.

House of Cards is a total mediocrity and once you look past the novelty of it being a Netflix original there's nothing there. Spacey's awful hammy performance doesn't deserve anything but to be laughed out of the category . The only thing even remotely award worthy about its season was Corey Stoll and he didn't even get nominated.

I'm fine with Robin Wright being nominated, but the real people who should have been nominated were Corey Stoll and Kristen Connelly. Oh well. It is what it is. And we all know that Spacey is going to win, so why fight it?

I can't speak for Parenthood (it's still on my to-watch list) but I'll back up Scandal being fantastic, and despite being ridiculously over-the-top at every turn is still somehow less silly and unbelievable than what Homeland season 2 churned out.

I'd be willing to bet most people who think Scandal season 2 can't touch cable shows haven't actually watched Scandal. That show knows how to tell a story that moves along at a decent pace.

The Emmys routinely screw up the comedy categories so horrifically that it's not even remotely funny. It's just sad and stupid.

It's because the average age of the typical Emmy voter is ollllllld and is from a different time when comedy on TV was different. It's why Big Bang keeps winning awards -- it's their multicam.

Homeland S2 wasn't even that bad. There, I said it.

Hmmm.

Agree to disagree. I thought Homeland Season 2 was most definitely THAT bad. You saw a clear shift in tone/style from the writers, and it wasn't even done in a smart way. I've lost all faith in the show after reading the exit interview from the showrunner. He basically sounded like Vena Sud defending the Killing's poor writing.

And honestly, I'm starting to think that they just got lucky with Season 1.

Kevin Spacey is going to steal Cranston's emmy and it will be a travesty, Hamm I would be okay with. If Homeland wins anything its a joke
