What's this? An episode of 8-4 Play where the crew actually talks abut what they do all day: game translatin'? Believe it, spoony bard! Localization legend Richard Honeywood, he of such Square Enix favorites as Xenogears, Chrono Cross and Dragon Quest VIII, joins us to talk shop, 64DD development and being best buds (well, buds) with Nintendo prez Satoru Iwata. And speaking of Nintendo - did someone say Project Cafe? Tune in for idle speculation on the big N's rumored Wii successor system, along with thoughts on Capcom's Captivate games, Sonic Generations and plenty more.

Enjoying it so far. I don't understand the logic of people on gaming podcasts saying HDii and Xbox 3 won't use BluRay because of Sony. They accept they'll pay the DVD Forum (including Sony) royalties for DVD, but they won't pay the BluRay Disc Association (including Sony) royalities?

All three consoles should have BluRay.

I was just listening to Ryan Scott say the same thing on the Geekbox.

He was adamant that Nintendo using Blu-ray for their next console was impossible, but he assumed it was because Blu-ray is a "Sony technology" and Sony would never let a direct competitor use it.

Sony would be glad other consoles used their Blu tech. More exposure and they get money from their competitors.

The GiantBombers said it about Xbox 3 a few weeks back, suggesting they might use HD-DVD instead. Insanity.

Nintendo could do what they did with DVDs: Create their own format based on the same technology.

DVD is just as much a "Sony Technology" as Blu ray

Sony get royalties from both........shhhhh....dont tell Microsoft they have been paying sony monies for years to use disks for games :D

i dont understand johns argument at all

if you want 3rd party games go buy ps3 and 360

no need to have another platform with the same games on it

also sonic colors is shit ? really ?

Oh man Honeywood is such a kickass name. If I'm not playing as Thunderstorm Honeywood in the next FF I'll be sad

It’s safe to assume game journalists are much pettier and wrapped up in fanboy bullshit then the actual decision makers at these companies

Or at least we should hope they are

Warning! Stage 16 & 8-4 back to back, yeah boi.

You can't be fans of both, it's the MK vs SF of Japanese gaming podcast
8-4= MK
Red Son Gamer = Cyberbots

There is an irrational hate for all things Sonic in the 8-4 offices.

I like 8-4 but listening to them is a glaring reminder how much the Japanese gaming as become sort of limited if not niche. Its almost always only talk about RPGs and Nintendo....DS. When I started listening I kind f expected more but the formula seems to be the same. Oh well, will still listen.

WAHP! is like my Demon's Souls to 8-4's Carnival Games. Very different levels of crazy good Japanophileness.

Only funnin' about Carnival Games ;)

This is a problem because you can't get talk about other games (western variety or otherwise) in numerous other podcasts? Mark and John sometimes talk about non-Japanese games. Mark was all about the Dead Space 2 a few episodes ago.

I'm glad this is their formula because it's one that's rare nowadays in gaming podcasts.

Oh, excellent, I've been waiting for the Honeywood interview. So sad I missed submitting questions by a matter of hours. (._. )

Excellent timing. I was just updating iTunes in the hope that a podcast with idle speculation about Café would turn up :D Probably going to be much better discussion than I've heard elsewhere as well...

Im here to defend the Gameboy!

The reason why the system was preferred among my friends was because of the BATTERY LIFE. Somehow nobody mentioned this!

The Game Gear and the Lynx had fucking teeeerrible battery life, they lasted two hours and you were done ... and batteries were kind of a hot commodity back then. History also backs up that the most powerful console is seldom the winner, the reason why is because you need awesome software and the Gameboy had that going too.

Great podcast, guys.

But you guys forgot about half of the James Pond games (James Pond, Robocod, James Pond III, The Aquatic Games), not to mention his unforgettable cameo in the surely Kevin Gifford-approved Rolo to the Rescue
Rolo_to_the_Rescue_cover.jpg

And I will back up young JJ on behalf of the battered wives trapped in the Sonic Cycle worldwide next week.

Oh, and Sir Honeywood's disclosures were great, especially working under Iwata on an ill-fated multiplayer kids third-person shooter with water guns! For 64DD!

Great show. I liked hearing you guys' take on the Wii 2 rumors I really enjoyed the DQ localization part. I kind of want a DQ show where you guys talk about the actual games like you did with Monster Hunter though.

The localisation segment was so freakin' good.
Loved it. Great job guys, hats off to Richard for being so honest and frank.

Why not do a trial run of a live show before the RE podcast?

Listened to this at work, really cool show. Did I hallucinate this or did someone say at some point that Yangus' original Japanese name was Muhammad? That's the kind of crazy trivia I wanted to hear more of.

The localization segment was by far the best, it was really nicely balanced between getting a feel for what the work was like at the time, allusions to odd stories (spending hotel nights in Slovenia?) and pure reminiscing nostalgia. I would have preferred even more super specific examples of some localization decisions, like what names got rejected, what exactly were people having pitched battles about, stuff like that.

Like the part where they were talking about Dragon Quest onomatopoeia, I guess they were talking about things like Zing and Kazing? What were some of the alternatives schemes being considered? I don't know why this shit is so fascinating to me, but great show, you guys gotta have this be a regular segment where you delve DEEP for any given famous series with your translation buddies.

We're planning on doing that, actually!

Sorry, no.

It was a champagne-filled penis.

(Where in the hell did Mark pull that from?)

He wasn't honest. The guy flat out lied.

"At a development meeting in Japanese I was saying 'You can't call it Yahweh. You can't do that.' I was getting exasperated, and in Japanese [I said] yabeh-o, and they all laughed and thought it was the greatest pun ever. And so, the last boss was suddenly called Yabeh."

(For those scratching their heads, the adjective yabai is Japanese slang for something dangerous, unfortunate or otherwise inconvenient. Hence the room of hysterical Squaresoft employees, and one bewildered Honeywood.)

For some on Honeywood's staff, the potentially controversial themes cultivated by Xenogears were no laughing matter.

"[They] took every biblical reference they could and tried to twist it. One of the translators was a bit worried about this and was like 'I don't want to have fundamental Christians or other religious groups being upset and blowing up our office.' And I guess in the States, at that time, it was a concern. So I had two translators walk off it and I was stuck there by myself."

The antagonist known as Yabeh was ultimately redubbed Deus in the English-language release of the game. And Xenogears has enjoyed an enduring legacy as cult-favorite—in large part thanks to its edgy content.

There is no Yabeh or Yahweh in the Japanese version of Xenogears. He lied right there. Deus is called Deus in the Japnese version, like it is in the English version. The English version of the game refers to Yabeh system, but that's something they added for the English version. The Japanese version called it System Deus instead of Yabeh.

great podcast, really enjoyed the insightful look@ the translation process. I mostly share the sentiments the crew had on cafe.

@BK. Honeywood was there. You weren't. so stop the "he flat out lied comments". He knows more than you.

And I know for a fact that Yabeh appears nowhere in the game.

Mark needs to stop embarrassing himself with the Game Boy talk... please try to retain some shreds of credibility while you still can...

Yeah, this is getting to be a big pet peeve of mine. Sony has their fingers in basically every optical format out there. You can't use a disc without having a cross licensing agreement with, or paying Sony, directly or indirectly. BluRay isn't even Sony's format, they just happen to be a large stakeholder in the consortium. The fact that HD-DVD vs BluRay became a proxy battle in the great fanboy wars has really clouded the issue.

Even if Nintendo wanted to make some kind of mini-disc based on Blu-ray for their next system, they'd still probably have to pay Sony in some manner. And mini-BluRay makes little sense anyway, since it's hard to see what advantages it could possibly have over DVD or full BluRay. It would cost as much as BluRay to manufacture without giving a big enough storage advantage over DVD.

Or Microsoft, using HD-DVD? Since it lost and isn't in demand, drives will be more expensive than BluRay, disc manufacturing will have to be done at dedicated Xbox replication centers and you won't be able to market it as a BluRay player. That's a losing proposition all around.

If you're going optical again next generation, BluRay is the only sensible option.

I can't believe anyone would defend the Lynx and Game Gear. They were "portable" systems with 15 mins of battery life.

I spent 99% of my time on my Game Gear with an AC adapter.

Holy shit. When did this podcast become so anti Sony? This had everything. Nintendo using bluray? No way! Nevermind that DVD = Sony. Home hate? Who uses the damn thing? Nevermind that it's always packed! And makes Sony money! The Last Guardian becoming like the next GT5?! Sure it is! Let's bitch about a game that is actually given the time to flourish under capable hands.

So tired of this bs in all of the podcast I listen to. Balance it out guys. A lot of bitching about one particular company is really annoying. Ending it on a sarcastic positive note (Tokyo Jungle) is just embarrassing on your part.

Great episode as usual. the 'champagne-filled penis' bit almost killed me :lol .
I enjoyed the localization part very much. Kinda wish it was longer, but it's not a big deal. One thing bothers me though. I know they were joking, but I still hate the fact that whenever an Arabic name/person/whatever is mentioned, there has to be an obligatory "Oh I hope they don't bomb me" joke. It's amazing how an image of an entire nation is colored based on a very small and insignificant percentage of it.

Anyway, sorry for getting off topic, carry on. Can't wait for the RE episode.

The most funny thing I got from this is a Westerner telling Japanese guys not to design a Japanese game a certain way, because of it stands against Western notion of culture, etc.

First - Home hating in podcasts is a standard procedure. About TLG they said at the end that it will deliver and probably be more satisfying than GT 5. I dont see them being anti Sony, Mark shit on the Gameboy like it was the virtual boy hehe....

I might be wrong, but didn't they acknowledge exactly that? Nevermind that you can still not like it personally in light of that.

Kaze13 said:

Which was also acknowledged. I don't know who said it, I think it was Mark, but that was one of his exact sentiments. It's the one game you want to take all the time it takes. At the same time, he wants them to hurry up because he loves it.

Your Sony goggles are warping your perception, friend.

Wow @ the Home ignorance both on the podcast and here. I'll be sure to forward this podcast ep to at least one person who's responsible for that stuff.

@Rufus: So in your world, the Yakuza games are Grand Theft Auto clones, and there's no difference between any fighter ever made, ever? What a poor statement to make. I'm not about to defend Home as I don't belong to its regular pool of users, but at least I know what it is.

Best episode yet guys. Seriously the interview with Richard Honeywood was brilliant.

Mark is so wrong about Game Boy though, I missed the episode when he dared to besmirch the Game Boy! But yes, the Game Boy wasn't a great bit of hardware in terms of specs, but some of the games on the system pushed that hardware beyond what should have been possible for a system like this. For me, I was 10 when I got my Game Boy in 1990 and being able to play Nintendo games whilst going on holidays with the family or for when I was booted off the family TV and couldn't play NES.
