9800X3D review thread

Awesome and all but keeping my 7600x. Little CPU that could and still performs in the 100+ fps range.

I’ll definitely be upgrading when the last AM5 CPU generation comes out though. 11800x3d or whatever.

Can you cool this thing with a thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 or Peerless Assassin 120 cooler or does it need liquid cooling - how hot does it run?

runs even cooler than the 7800X3D due to them flipping the CCX so that the cache is now on the bottom and the the cpu cores are on top making direct contact with the IHS

What I like the most with this CPU is how this technology will also help consoles and GPUs. We speculated whether they were ready ahead of this console generation (but they were not obviously) but putting a large cache directly underneath a console chip or a GPU chip (with the low latency that allows) should really boost the performance there as well.

Really cool that they succesfully made that happen for a product in serial production. Should potentially create a very interesting next generation of GPU and console chips.

Is the 7800x3d getting restocked for you?

I've been told it's out of stock (has been for a few weeks now) and will stay that way by resellers in the UAE.

Edit: It's also out of stock on newegg's International store.

Yeah, stocks dried up quite a bit through November. Probably allocating cache to 9800x3d for launch as launch allocation on 9800x3d is looking good.

I've been told it will be back in December and for the future. They will probably discount it or something.

Yeah, it could partially offset the downsides of using GDDR as system memory. On the other hand Sony and Microsoft gimped the caches on their SoCs to save a few pennies so I don't know if we can count on that.

Ok got my parts. Just need a GPU to tie me over. I've gone for a smaller form factor "mobile" pc that i can fit in my tv cabinet to replace my consoles in the future but I want to be able to take it upstairs into the attic to hook up to my full sim racing cockpit.

Gone for:

Corsair 2000D
9800x3d
Asus b650i strix wifi
64gb 2 x 32gb 6000mhz corsair titanium
4tb corsair gen5 pro nvme 12000mbs read
1000w corsair sf psu gold
360mm corsair link titan aio

Need a 5090 to squeeze in this beast. Case is tall but I can lay it down or stand it up in its 20cm x 20cm footprint.

I'm hyped!

This is a great example of how averages can hide just how bad a CPU architecture can be.
One would look at the 285K average and think that it's just 5% slower than a 14900K, and that this will be the case for all games.
But while Zen4, Zen5, Raptor lake and Alder lake have consistent results in all games, Arrow Lake has several games where performance tanks by a huge gap.

Im going with 2TB and a 4090

Do you have any idea when the 9800X3D is due to be released in the UK?

There is zero benefit in going for a gen5 nvme, but if you must get one then go for a sabrent rocket 5 if you can get your hands on one:

I assume the corsair drive you're going for is the mp700 pro, in which case they are known to have issues with heat and thermal throttling, at which point you would have been far better off just going for a solid gen4 drive.

Samsung 990 Pro and WD SN850X seem to two of the better options available.

They didn't retire the 7800X3D. That was the 5800X3D.
But it's funny that AMD made the 5800X3D and the 7800X3D so good, that now they are having trouble competing with themselves.
Hmm I'm sure 2 months ago I looked at buying a 58003d and Im sure I saw some for low prices but now I can't find any.

Those are gen4 drives, but yeh if dropping down to gen 4 then the SN850X, kingston fury renegade, crucial T500, kioxia exceria pro, or the hynix p41 are good options.

Discontinued I believe, look for the 5700x3d, will give you similar performance.

Yep - Gen 4 seems more than sufficient; there doesn't seem to be any performance benefits with loading OS/games with Gen 5.

Agree. However, the price for a chip increases exponentially with the area (mm2). If you take away the highest level cache from the main SoC the price goes down by quite some. The cache underneath is a separate piece of silicon so the total price might not move as much as one thinks.

But I agree that cost will obviously be a parameter and maybe this solution is not sufficiently cost effective even for next generation chips.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
AMD underhyped and overdelivered performance wise.

It's amazing how much better they come out looking when they do that.

Not to keep piling on, but I'd love to hear Leonidas Leonidas spin this as anything other a complete ass kicking to Arrow Lake.

I won't lie, I wanted Intel to give me a reason to switch over to their platform. But now AMD has me wanting to upgrade my 7800X3D to a 9800X3D.

Crazy times.

Yeah i grabbed the mp700 pro. It will work well I think even if it is a little thermal throttled.

Thanks for the advice on better options but I was lucky to get this one for free, but I would 100% do more research if I was paying with my own beans.

Got the 7800X3D for 350 euros near BF last year. Now it’s 480 and this CPU is even more expensive. Intel needs to get cracking again. AMD too comfy.

Where do you live? How do these CPUs have such differences?

South America. My guess is because Intel produces chips here, AMD doesnt.

The 14900K is $400, while the 9950X is $600 (3D will probably be $800) Depending on the 385k launch price it might be better.

That explains it.
I have a few friends in Brasil, and they all tell of exorbitant prices for hardware.
Though none ever told of different prices between AMD, Intel or Nvidia.

I currently have a 5800x the 3d would be an upgrade but I'm not sure the 5700 would be

I had no trouble ordering the 9800X3D this morning

6QNloBB.jpeg

Newegg started taking orders like 20 minutes earlier than they had mentioned. I can't seem to find the Noctua NH-D15 G2 in stock anywhere but fortunately Noctua had sent me AM5 mounting hardware for my NH-D14 so I'll just use that for now. I tried to order the G2 on Newegg but they put it as a separate order and then was immediately cancelled due to insufficient stock. Then I tried to order it on Amazon but during the checkout process they also mentioned they don't actually have it in stock, sigh. Fortunately the 9800X3D seems to run cool so I'll see how it goes with my current cooler. Not sure why the G2 is so hard to find though.
