Isn't it a bit early to see the possibility for such a situation? PSP isn't even out in Europe and we definitely know that DS is performing very well in Europe: it sold through 1m in a bit more than 3 months(it was reported about the end of June). Even if the DS would have stopped selling from that point on it would take a VERY long time for PSP to get 80% marketshare(please consider: the european Handheld market is only a bit more than half as big as the USA's).

QFT. That's what I was thinking.

Back before the PSP launched, everything was "DS is dying/PSP will kill and destroy." PSP was winning weekly in Japan, DS had little to no games, and the U.S. PSP launch where it was expected to sell out basically in a week or two was coming up.

Then...

1. Nintendogs catapults the DS into a lead over the PSP in Japan, permanently forestalling any Japanese takeover of the handheld market.
2. E3 was generally a disappointment for PSP, whereas DS generally exceeded expectations.
3. More good, system selling games were released in Japan, and the U.S. finally got some generally-considered worthy games (June).

After E3, it was like most of the PSP supporting crowd was in shock, which let the DS supporting crowd basically have free reign for some weeks. Now, the U.S. market is clearly swinging towards PSP, and the PSP supporting crowd is out of shock and pushing back.

Nintendo consoles/handhelds ALWAYS have great launches in Europe (Due to 'nice' launch prices?) The NES (Which actually got outsold for quite a time by the Master System), the SNES, the N64 and the GC and GBA all had HUGE launch numbers, but dropped off quite a bit afterwards. The fact that the DS took 3 months to reach 1m is a bit unnerving IMO.

Man, I just don't know what to think...

The GAF makes it seem as if the DS is home to hundreds of classics already while the PSP has absolutely nothing at all worth playing. The GAF would also lead you to believe that the DS is crushing the PSP at retail.

Then I see lists like this...and remember that all of those people could be acting like Zeo. That DS list is just so unappealing to me. It seems that all DS popularity is the result of its solid JP lineup.

I was nearly convinced that the PSP was dead, but I don't know. I hope they both do well, but the GAF really f*cking hates the PSP.

See, the way I look at is this: you gotta watch for the spin. Fanboys are savvier now, more seasoned from five years ago. It's all subterfuge and out of context sales figures and release schedules now, no longer the blatant "****** AM TEH SUCKZORZ".

Meanwhile, in the real world, neither is on its deathbed, and neither is getting ALL the good releases.

When I refer to disappointment in "big" games, I'm talking about stuff like Mario Kart, Nintendogs, Animal Crossing, and the like. Those games do nothing for me, but they are receiving lots of attention and will be considered "great games". I won't deny that, but that doesn't mean I can enjoy them. I have an open mind in regards to most games, but those don't appeal to me (from a gameplay point of view) and my distaste for some of those themes only brings that interest down another notch. I'm excited about an actual Mario platformer, for example, but I don't care for the "Mario" franchise (from a character perspective) so a lot of related games do not interest me.

But really nintendo has to learn no to use their characters in every bloody game. It seems Nintendo is slowly learning, but it's going to take a while. That said there is an actual 2d mario platformer on the way. That has to be good news. But from a "mature" games persepective, there are barely any. You should have a look at "shogun total war", "lost in blue"(if you like survival kids on the GBC), "snowboard kids"(they matures it up much to the distaste of gaf), and "Sonic Rush"(if you like sonic games of yester year) though.

Only DS is out in Europe. Depending on which way you tend to, you can now troll successfully or not.

Just take a look in every PSP thread and you'll see the same ol' shit about there being no games to play on the PSP.

I think it's pretty much the same for the DS in the US anyway. But if you look at the table Wario posted, it looks like there's 3 new games in May, 2 in June, and just 1 in July. Is it really surprising to hear people saying there's nothing to play?

I think that many N-fans will be forced to reconsider PSP's position by the end of the year as it inevitably becomes the top selling handheld in two contries out of three

No, it's the bottom line. North America is now the biggest market.

North America's always been the biggest market. Though Europe may become number one for PlayStations.

PSP is still selling 20k a week (which is absolutely respectable) with no important releases.

Was it respectable when GameCube was doing the same thing in 2002? It's actually sort of shocking how closely PSP's traking to GC imo, both in hardware and software for Japan. :/

I was suprised to hear from a co-worker that his son just picked up a PSP last night. Traded in his GBA collection (and SP hardware) as well as a number of PS2 games in order to get it.

Of course, while I'm glad he's supporting the PSP, I wish I could warn him about trading away old games and systems. I foolishly did the same thing with a lot of my old games and systems. I regret it very much now...

Not at all - GAFers will say there's nothing to play on a system that's been out for years with a library of 100s of games as well. It doesn't say much by itself. Look at the software tie ratio though that's over 2:1 right now for a brand new system tells a different story.
