I went in expecting nothing and had an ok time. It isn’t a terrible movie, but Jack Black is insufferable in it. However there are a few gags and subplots he isn’t invoked in that got a chuckle out of me.

A Minecraft Movie’ Massive $100M+ U.S. Opening, Best YTD, Warner Bros & Legendary Resurrect Box Office

Box Office: ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Digs Up Record $10.6M in Thursday Previews

That's the best showing ever for a video-game adaptation.

A Minecraft Movie has already set an impressive new box-office record

‘Minecraft’ Movie Reviews Are In, And A Billion Dollar Haul Is Nigh

Warner Bros’ A Minecraft Movie leads new titles in UK and Ireland cinemas this weekend as the video game adaptation opens in 675 locations.

It seems that it is, at least, commercial success. I am not the target audience and probably will never see it as I have got 0 interest in video games movie/tv series adaptations.

As somebody who has played an obscene number of hours in Minecraft I enjoyed the movie enough.
My son and all the kids in the cinema had plenty of laughs which was good to see.

My wife who knows very little about the game other than the name said she also enjoyed it, even without knowing the context of some things.

Was it dumb? Sure. But it's aimed at kids, and it fits there quite nicely.

Maybe it won't be as tolerable or appealing to adults like Sonic or Mario are, but if Minecraft is skipping any broader appeal and just going for the under 10 demographic then so be it. Anything else is secondary anyway when you get down to it.

I will never get audience participation in US cinemas. If you clapped in the UK you’d most likely be sectioned under the Mental Health Act. As for screaming and hollering - you’d just be thrown out. Maybe we’re too uptight!

The movie cost 150 million to make. With the 2.5x rule, it'll need to make 375 million to break even. It had a great opening week and maybe the kids enjoy it which could carry it over, but the reviews will do it no favors. It's getting pretty midling fan reviews. Could go either way honestly.

I wasn't expecting anything different. The game is very popular for the kids, so of course parents would bring them to watch this movie, shit or not.

The IP have a huge popularity.

Had to watch through this because of my daughter. In my top 10 of worst movies I’ve ever seen, a solid 3.

When a movie starts with a long narrated exposition and non stop unfunny jokes, you know you’re in for a treat.

Avoid at all costs!

So I'm watching the movie through completely legal and legitimate means *cough* and uh... it seems that an unfinished version of the film has leaked. Lots of unfinished CG and green screen bleeding through Jack Black's hair. :messenger_grinning_smiling:

Reminds me of the leaked version of X-Men Origins

Went to see it today with my Son. Was big on Minecraft when it first launched but havent played properly for a long time, the whole Cinema (in the uk) Clapped for that scene above, and another one, I didnt get it. I sat there cringed out, and so did my 6 year old son.

Movie was alright though tbf.

Saw the movie with my kids today. To be frank, Minecraft is not my thing. Movie was ok though and the kids loved it.

People clapped… Not a clap worthy movie, not by a country mile.

I took kids to this. It wasn't great, but the audience loved it. Lots of cheering and clapping throughout. Standing ovation at the end.

It has its audience, I guess.

Can you explain the context?

I've never played minecraft.

I hope this was a theater rented out by people or something, seeing shit like that makes me mad. Especially since I feel like seeing films in a theater without people loudly talking or disrupting feels almost impossible these days.

I won't see this movie by any means, I never quite understood them making Jack Black "Steve" with his full beard and all. It just felt... odd to me.

I saw it today, dumb fun movie, nothing more nothing less. Jack Black and Mamoa have good chemistry, they should do more projects together. The other human characters were just set dressing at best.

I saw the movie today. It was one of those good bad type of movies. There was definitely lots of cringe but the movie has it's moments. There was a little boy sitting to my right who was on the edge of his seat the entire movie. At one point in the movie the two girls are off on their own fighting mobs with a hoe and shovel. The little boy goes "why are you using a hoe" multiple times during that scene .

Opening week? It topped $100m in a day.

Yep. Disposable entertainment. Jack Black and Momoa were definitely feeding off each other. Give them a better movie together and it would be money.

The brother his sister and the sista didn’t need to be there. Totally pointless characters that added nothing of value.

OH and Stifler’s mom subplot?

It was fine. Good pacing, and the kids liked it. For me as an adult the laughs were pretty few and far between, but I was never really bored either. A nice adventure.

People without young kids in their lives don't understand how big Minecraft has been for the last decade, this could have been rated 0.1 by everyone and it would have still made millions just because of kids and their parents going.

310mil opening weekend world wide. It's a very good success, even if it drops considerably in next few weeks

Some theatres have screenings that are advertised as being for audience participation.

But yeah, this movie is going to make a shit load of money. Minecraft is a huge property. Jack Black and Jason Momoa are still box office draws, and it's spring break in parts of North America. A lot of things aligning.

What was the last good film Jack Black was in?

Anchorman?

It was dumb fun, which is really all a movie like this could ever be. Similar to the Super Mario Bros Movie (although I liked Mario more than this).

Still, it’s an unquestionable smash hit at the box office. Get ready for a franchise of these films.
