A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

I mean yea, that's exactly what it is. It's just weird that he wouldn't see this coming. Never leave a NEAR statistical impossibility up to the internet. They will make it happen. I hope he can clear the air, because the netizens are gonna eat HG alive at this rate.
Was it ever a near statistical impossibility though? Every time he mentioned that he seemed to imply by chance, but the game gives you to tool to name things from star systems to individual locations on the ground and a ship capable of traversing the the universe. Of course this was going to happen as soon as two people upgraded their ships enough.

Comments in interviews where the interviewer brings up multiplayer is not an advertising campaign. Yes, this answer is misleading, but people are acting like Sean Murray paraded out multiplayer as the selling point of the game.

No, they're not. But it is a feature that has been talked about. It's a shared world. Not being able to see other players is a big deal and was not what we were told we were getting. It kills a lot of the magic IMO. Don't discredit that.

Well this is even more odd now

The two streamers are seeing completely different things outside the space station they are taking off from

One of them there is a fleet of ships outside the space station and the other one just has nothing

This makes it literally impossible for the game to have multiplayer. As far as I am concerned, this 100% proves it doesn't have it.

Of all the things this game has to offer and this is the only thing people seem to care about... He has stated multiple times this is not a multiplayer game, don't know why people are expecting to meet up with their buddies on here...

More indications this is single player. The player is obviously alone in their instance of the universe which goes against the statements made by the developer to drum up hype.

Ok but again, he said we would be able to see each other and it isn't happening. So what happened?

In that string of tweets he clearly lets it be known they're having server issues. It's one thing to send a packet of data to a server, its another to have a constant connection for tracking player position. If the servers aren't behaving as expected perhaps the multiplayer "features" aren't behaving properly either.

They're very clearly still working through some technical issues on their side, which is why i'm not going to definitively believe there isn't some sort of multiplayer component in the game. For all we know it could just be seeing player ghosts like Dark Souls. But to say something doesn't exist when the infrastructure it depends on isn't working properly isn't exactly fair.

welp

Is anyone open to the idea that it's still planned but since it's launch day the servers are being hit pretty hard?
I think people are, they'd just like Hello Games to actually say that.

Of all the things this game has to offer and this is the only thing people seem to care about... He has stated multiple times this is not a multiplayer game, don't know why people are expecting to meet up with their buddies on here...
Because they said that you can run into other players?

Is there an story ? Just thought it was Minecraft on space , with a bland plot to reach the center of universe like the "plot" on Minecraft

Copy arrives tomorrow and my main goal
Is to just go around the universe

Yes there is. There's not too much on plot as far as I've seen, but there's loads of backstory. Lots to read and find.

Also LOL at him jerking off the number of species "discovered". Is he trolling or is this more RNG marketing horseshit?

What the hell, man. 'Jerking off'? 10 million found is a pretty staggering number.

they are at it again..

That would make sense. But the intriguing fact is that HG has not given a single clear answer about the situation, what lead us to believe that's not the case and that they're being obtuse.

When Elite Dangerous released, players could meet but wouldn't always see each other in game. Although I do believe David Braben was a little more transparent about how multiplayer worked. But then again, Elite was marketed as a multiplayer capable game.

So watching Psytokat and this dude barely knows how to hold a controller. And you all want to base "no mp" off of this guy?

“You can only meet if both players hold their controller in the right axis with both hands and if the serial number of the controllers are only differ in one cipher“

How many devs do you know have been radio silent on Twitter while thousands of people were asking them about some sort of controversy because they knew it would be resolved by itself the same day or soon enough?

Pick one. A good portion of them do this, wtf?

You can play with your friends. You guys just don't have the imagination that is required!

You travel to the same new galaxy as your buddy and then you alternately name the planets as correspondence chess moves the further you get out.

Except you can play with your friends in Minecraft, terraria, starboard, etc...

Honestly, at this point, I wouldn't even care if it turns out that it had to be cancelled permanently.

I just want a clear answer from them about why people can't see each other when he said that they could before.

It sounds like that's what Sean is implying with his latest round of tweets. So I'm open to the possibility. But honestly the whole thing has seemed fishy to me for a while.

Considering a lie is an intentional false statement, you have no way of knowing the intention.

Of course not, because hyping unexisting features in an upcoming game does not generate preorders.

Then some folks wonder how companies get away with this. Well, this is how.

The the entire issue.

Adding the word "but" to the end of a sentence describing wrongdoing, doesn't make the wrongdoing less wrong.

Misleading people isn't a good thing. That's why they're annoyed.

I actually like the sound of that, lol.

Please, don't post this image.

People here will think Sean said they can have a tug-of-war with a Captain America Shield in No Man's Sky.

They'll call Sean a liar when they find out they can't.

Do you honestly think No Man's Sky wasn't previously promoted as something you could play with friends? Were people unreasonable to expect that?

One attempt on day one doesn't point to anything really. Especially with the server issues that were present yesterday. We've been told multiple times that it can happen but it's near impossible. So far, I can't think of a reason to believe that isn't true.

I am not jumping to any conclusions though as we just don't know the reason. Maybe you shouldn't either.
You really think the devs wouldn't have issued a statement when they get hammered with this question on twitter right now? Instead Sean tweeted "Wow two players already met" when actually they didn't. They were in the same spot in their own games. Thats all.

This silence from the devs on this is what's really telling.

Is anyone open to the idea that it's still planned but since it's launch day the servers are being hit pretty hard?
Then they would very likely say so instead of letting the shitstorm happen.

It's really not, if a million players discover 10 apiece you have that number. Big numbers mean nothing with procedural generation pools. Maybe they push a patch that adds a new type of tail to a creature, oh my gawd 19373928732082633 new combinations!!!1

That nice of you to give them room to wiggle, but they haven't actually made a single definitive comment about the issue this thread is discussing since the issue arose.

He tried to clear it up, but it was pretty shitty to do so the day before the game comes out. They did a really poor job of showing/not showing their game prior to release. Seems to be a lot of confusion and disappointment with what's there in every discussion I've seen of the game.

You are trying to argue that because they never really acknowledged it that it's shitty they are just now calling it out? Blame your peers for planting this incorrect seed in your head, not the developer.

In no way is this Hello Games fault.

Here's my explanation from last night.
The times of day are different because there is no actual persistence between each players universe (other than planet/species names). When you quit or pause the game it has been effectively frozen in time, meaning that when you un-pause or start the game the universe continues from where you left off (like all single player games). This right here is why multiplayer in NMS is not possible (other than the planet/species names thing).
But planets rotations would differ in both your worlds, as well as every other moving object in the game. The state of everyone's individual instance of the universe is a function of time - like the real world -, and therefore if more time had passed in one person's universe than another, the state of their universes would differ entirely.
Time of day in this game isn't simply a skylight which moves across the skybox.

I don't have any problem with NMS being a singleplayer game, but it's really strange that 4 players have located each other in 2 locations between 18 quintillion planets this soon. I know there is a chance for this, but I thought the chance is much much less than this.
Again, why are people equating the odds of chance with coordination? They give you the means to name everything a ship capable of traveling. People coordinating to find each other was never stated to be extremely rare, Sean was always referring to chance.
