A quick question for Silent Hill afficianados

I know very little about this series, but I recently picked up Silent Hill 2 for the Xbox on the cheap. My question to you is, do you have to have played the first Silent Hill to understand Silent Hill 2, or is Silent Hill 2 a stand alone game?

I appreciate your answers.

Silent Hill 2 is stand alone. I haven't played it for a while, but I don't believe there are any references to SH1 in the second game.

Enjoy it, it's one of my favorite games of all time.

There's one very small reference to Silent Hill 1 near the ending that's basically a mark on the floor. If you've played Silent Hill 1, you get the reference but it's not essential to the plot. By the way, a LOT of people came in on 2 and never played 1 so you are with a great majority of the Silent Hill fans out there (assuming you become one). I came in at 1, which I still think is the best but 2 is very, very close.

There actually are very, very subtle references to SH1 in the second game, but knowing what they are just adds texture to one scene. They're not vital to understand anything that's going on, and I agree that you should play SH2 by all means, since it's the best in the series IMO!

However, if you like SH2 and want to continue with the series, then you might want to go back and play SH1 before the third game, since those two tie in pretty heavily. Likewise, there are some hooks in 2 that get picked up in 4, so play 2 first.

Ah, cool, I'll definitely be giving it a go then. I was under the impression that only Silent Hill 2 and 4 came out on Xbox, I guess that makes sense if those two are connected and 1 and 3 are connected.

I'm curious about the "Riddle Level" too, do they mean Zelda style puzzles or question and answer type riddles?

the puzzles are more comparable to Resident Evil or maybe even Myst ones

You should still definetly try to play silent hill 1 it's an excellent game. I played it recently on a psx emulator and it looks great and is pretty damn scary

Hmm, the puzzles are very different from Zelda. Part graphic adventure, part Myst. You'll solve some puzzles through manipulation of what lies directly before you (Myst-style) while others require item usage similar to classic grahpic adventures.

Just remember this, the game is heavily based on "the experience". The story is quite deep for a game and will take some thought to fully understand (nothing is "as is" in this game). The game never comes right out and explains everything. You have to piece it together. It's one of my favorite games ever, to be honest. The actual core gameplay is nothing amazing, but the game does some incredible things. Don't go in expecting some kind of insane combat based action title or anything.

Try to allow yourself to be sucked into the world as well. Play at night in the dark, for one thing. This is a game where ones approach to playing it will drastically alter how much enjoyment they get out of it.

Oh, and enjoy! :)

I own it too. I can't, for the life of me, play that game for longer than half hour periods at a time. I just can't, you can't make me!

The game is pretty sweet though. But if anyone bashes Eternal Darkness for it's fighting system, and say Silent Hill is sweet, slap him in the face.

IAWTP

I love the SH games though. Gotta find SH4 cheap.

Silent Hill 2 is my favorite survival horror game. (I'm not counting RE4 since it's actually an action game) Good purchase.

While that is true, ED focuses on combat a whole lot more than SH2 does...

The game was fantastic. In fact, I think it's the best of the series. The first game I played in the Silent Hill series was number 2, and I loved it from start to finish. Very creepy the whole way through. I didn't care for the 3rd, and the first I tried, but I couldn't get past the graphics so I quit.

Anyway, long story short - no, enjoy :)

I used to say that SH3 was my favorite, but now I'm not so sure...might still have to go with the original. SH4 would have been higher up on my list, if not for the fact that you have to
go through all the levels TWICE, escorting the girl the second time around.

A lot of people pick SH2 as their favorite, but I was never as big a fan of it. Still enjoyed playing it very much, but it's probably in last place for me in the SH series.

I really want to see Konami do a remake of Silent Hill 1.

Well I sat and played it awhile. I made it to
some hospital chasing after the bratty little girl
I have to say it is a pretty good experience so far, and I do agree with the comments about Eternal Darkness.

Will it ever explain what is up with the guy with the bucket on his head that is always humping the headless puppet things?

With Silent Hill, don't expect them to outright tell you what is what. There are a ton of hidden meanings and such to these games.

The monsters you are talking about are called "Pyramid Head," BTW.

SPOILERS DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HAVE FINISHED THE GAME

The Pyramid Heads represent
James.

The "legged" creatures represent
His wife, who James killed.

The little girl
is 100% innocent, so she doesn't see anything in Silent Hill. It's just a ghost town to her.

The mark on the floor that was mentioned is the Mark Of Samael,
the demon that the cult in Silent Hill worshipped. SH2 does not contain any storyline relating to this, SH1 and SH3 do.

I personally think SH2 has the best story...It's the whole descent of a man to the hell because he feels guilty and he in fact is...
Musically, SH2 is a beast...Instrumental tunes that make use of noise to recreate discomfortness in an awesome way.
And graphically it's not the best but it's pretty impressing too.

Back from another 20 minutes of this game. I love it yet I can't play it. Every new room I find, I get so uncomfortable, even though I know it's unlikely anything but one of those simple zombie things are gonna be in there. I've never had this happen to me before.

That's what makes SH games so great...That feeling. It's not fear...just that you feel bad there...Anyways nothing beats the Hospital of SH1...

Did you reach the prison yet? I swear to god, I've never dreaded playing a video game like I did when I had to walk through the corridor that was lined with cells.

Still in the apartments. Found the constantly vomiting guy and just kept right on going.

Worst part is is that I'm actively looking at a faqs (I'm in my fourth year of Uni so I don't have all the time in the world to play games), and I STILL uneasy playing it. I'm so into it that I don't want to play it. I think it'll be a feat if I beat it.

The hospital
in SH2?

SH2 worked me up so bad I couldn't sleep the night I finished it. I did the last couple of areas in one go (
the long-ass staircase, prison, underground area with Maria, the boat ride, the motel
). Oh god that sh!t was creepy. I just bought SH4 and I'm really looking forward to playing it.

Uh oh....

Nah...THe one in SH1 is worse...I couldn't even sleep...

When I was a child and I was ill I always had the same nightmare. I can't describe it...just that the whole environment changed in a way that I felt very bad. The SH dark areas are like that nightmare.

Yeah, the hospital in SH1, at the time, just completely had me curled up in the fetal position begging for mercy from the horrors running through my mind.

However, I think the most "moody" and awe-inspiring thing in the series would have to be
when you enter the town museum in SH2 and hear that low horn blowing, you walk around a little wondering where the hell it's coming from, then you finally turn around and see that black hole in the wall with these stairs descending into nothingness, I literally let out a "oh shit" when I first got to that part, just the thought of going down seemingly endless stairs while that horrid sound kept blowing and getting closer just made my skin crawl

I agree with that, teiresias. What an incredible part!

My absolute favorite area in the game, though, was
The Hotel! Amazing in every way.

Haha that's Silent Hill my friend! And believe me, the apartments is nothing of what is to come. Especially later on when everything turns in to nightmare. And that Pyramid thing constantly chasing you :O

Reading all these make me want to play SH2 again, for sure I will re-record the whole gameplay, then put the lost videos up again ! :D

Pyramid Head is so unforgettable.

Silent Hill 2 is ultimately my favorite of the series, though I like them all. They all have a mature, consistently gritty and unnerving, no-nonsense vibe that remains very different from the REs. RE4 picked up on some of that vibe in some scenarios (including the demo portions), but ultimately loosens up and drifts into DMC-like smart-mouthin' and colorful enemies.

I've played through SH2:RD probably 10 times now, not only for all endings but for 10-star rankings...and yet still look forward to soon sitting back and enjoying the full story and cutscenes again after all those recent speed runs.

Well, I just got to the part where
Maria was killed by the (pyramid?)head thing.
.

I did not see that coming :(

I have a question though, when
The little bratty girl locked me in the room with those hanging flesh rectangle things, I beat them and then it seemed like I fell into a different hospital or something. Like it was the same hospital but it was different in a lot of ways. What happened there? Or does it explain it later? I am just about to leave the hospital to go look for the little girl, I saved right before then.

That's the
alternate hospital. Same place, just distorted by the powers of Silent Hill. Also, what you describe as "falling" is James being wheeled over to that empty room.
Check out President Evils plot analysis at gamefaqs after your done with the game. It's a must read.

ohamsie, that
alternate hospital
is almost a tribute to the original game (don't worry, though, playing SH2 first really was just fine).

Anyways, I'm glad you're playing and enjoying. If you don't mind, could you give me a quick rundown of where you think the various plot elements are going? Think about each character (and even enemy) and consider their meaning. I'm just curious if you've caught onto certainy things just yet. Don't worry, I won't spoil anything.

Hopefully, as you close in on the end, we can get some nice discussions rolling. :)

Also, if you enjoy SH2, you really should track down SH1 and SH3 as well. Those two games also happen to kick ass and make a great duo (SH3 is the direct sequel to SH1, afterall).

damnit i shouldn't have read some of those spoilers :( I just got Silent Hill 2 PC from ebay the other day, but I'm waiting until after I beat 3 (also PC) to go play it. So it seems 2 is generally considered the best by many people? I know quite a few people have problems with this series, as well as RE, but I like 1, am enjoying 3, but uncertain about 4. Does it tie into any of the other games, or wholy its own?

SH4 is...odd. Kinda of an experiment, I suppose. I still managed to enjoy playing it and there are some good moments, but the game is MUCH less scary due to fully lit scenes, no flashlight and no radio. It ties in more with SH2 than any of the others, but it is really its own thing. Still worth playing if you don't expect the best...

Just the other day I was about to open up my sealed copy of Siren, before I got distracted by something. This thread is making me think I should play SH2 a second time instead.

Oh geez, Siren will whoop your ass. That game is f*cking difficult...

Silent Hill 2 is so good I even bought the later on Platinum version -- Director's Cut. I didn't get the story on the Maria chapter though. Anyone want to sum it up? It was so long ago I played that extra chapter (and even the real game, hence 3 years or so).

well i only spent 15 for SH2 and 5(!!) for SH3, both new in boxes, so if i can find 4 for fairly cheap ill go for it. Now to find a cheap version of 1 so i can play it on my... erm. anyway, why wasnt 1 released on PC, anyone know?

Yep. Only RE4 comes close (and those enemies are much slower and less deadly). One Shibito in Siren can completely destroy you if you are careless...

I know all the music for the SH games was made in-house, but what about the intro song in SH3 and some of the songs from SH4? Are those in-house productions, as well?
