A woman president would be new, Hillary Clinton is not.

I feel like Obama was definitely more of a fresh new first step for black people than Hillary is for women.

Furthermore, I feel like many people would have preferred a different person as the first female president. (shrug)

Thank you for phrasing it this way. This sentiment is definitely not common for those I've talked with IRL.

But if you aren't a misogynist, why are you OK with Trump's anti-women rhetoric?

You are have been very outspoken for your support of the GOP (and by extension, their racist & anti-gay policies.)

So if you don't mind clarifying: how do you reconcile the GOP's racist, homophobic and misogynistic policies & rhetoric with what you claim is your own tolerance?

Please post in-detail about why you agree with Trump & the GOP on:
1) Why are you OK with gay people not being able to marry?
2) Why do you think it's OK to allow private companies to discriminate based on orientation?
2) Why isn't systemic racism a problem?
3) Why are Trump's comments on women are OK?

Looking forward to hearing your answer
, but fully expecting you to leave the thread without addressing any of this lol.
You are being a total bully, and disingenuous. This thread is about the newness of Clinton, but you are making it about Trump. Furthermore you are not truly asking anything, you are telling and accusing me of irrelevant ideals I've never commented on (you don't ask if I believe in gay rights, you tell me that I am okay with gays mot get into married, and you assume I agree with the GOP), that have nothing to do with the thread, merely to push your accusations. Next time, ask relevant questions in a relevant thread, and don't be a bully. This post of yours reads like Fox News on a bad day, Jeez...

I'm not sure if it's an accusation to say that you're going to vote for Donald effin Trump when you've stated as much in other threads.

I don't get it either. You support Trump but identify as LGBT, correct? You haven't been subtle about this. His comments aren't really off base at all.

And he's not the first, nor the last, to question this. But you always seem to ignore it.

This is exactly how I feel. I want a female president, just not her.

I am very comfortable saying black person, please don't try to start something that isn't there.

I respect the president greatly when it comes to how he expresses his identity. He is a person who is less interested in labels and more interested in treating each other right. Respectfully calling him a multi-racial African american-identifying person is accurate and is respectful to his core beliefs.

And Mysogyny? Seriously? I've probably vote for about as many women as men in my lifetime, and I Belleive that choosing a president of the United States and letting looks, race, gender expression, orientation or sex become a determining factor is extremely petty and discriminatory; something I would never do.

Do I believe that the USA could and should have a female president? Absolutely, why not? No reason why a woman can't be a great leader of this great nation. Do I think that person is Clinton? I do not.

The little I said was respectful and not complicated, you seemed to actually want to turn it into something ugly that it wasn't. Not cool.

"how he expresses his identity"

he's black. stop being so.... you.

I think Hillary is a fairly rotten person and a proto-political robot, but there are no words for how much of a disaster Trump would be. It's ludicrous and terrifying to even ponder.

trump would definitely be an unprecedented disaster, but at least non-voters like huelen will still have their irrelevant convictions intact or whatever. who cares about who many people donald will hurt. at least they stood their ground!

In terms of politics, I think Hillary's nomination is somewhat less symbolic than Obama getting in. Obama not being a historic African-American was and being the first mixed race/black president was interesting. In terms of politics, I don't think her gender is relevant. She doesn't seem to be offering anything particularly new or transformative.

Trump would definitely be worse. Hilary is power hungry and an establishment figure; Trump is a pure ego-maniac. Still the US needs change in a certain direction (sustainability, progress on carbon, etc)...I doubt it will come from either unfortunately (well less from Trump)

I don't give a shit about the newness of the candidate. If that was the case, I would have wanted Palin with McCain as her VP in 2008. I want the most qualified candidate that represents my views and political beliefs. Clinton meets that metric. No other candidate in this primary or in the third party wings represents my views and will be as effective as I hope. Every other candidate is awful compared to Clinton.

Newness? Get the fuck out of here with that stupid shit.

Empress Theodora tho🤔

got any history book recommendations for imperial China?

I'd hardly call the Byzantine Empire the greatest in the world during any of its time.

One could argue Queen Victoria was the most powerful person in the world early in her reign. Definitely had serious clout if not necessarily rule.

In regards to books on China my friend whose a Asian Studies PHD student specializing in China gave me a book titled The Troubled Empire. He said it was good and generally knows his stuff. I just haven't started it yet.

Edit: I checked my timelines 400-600 AD was a bad time for kind of everyone the Byzantine empire gets that one.

The Onion article in the first page already summed it up nicely.

A lot of people haven't come to the realization that a woman leading this country is most likely going to happen for the first time in history. I hope young women choose to take inspiration from this, because regardless of where you stand politically it's an amazing ceiling shattered for women all around.
