After suffering years of abuse at home, a 15-year-old girl broke into her parents' locked room through a window, took their gun while they were away and shot her 16-year-old brother to death, authorities said.

On Wednesday, authorities released police documents and interviews describing the abuse, including that the girl was locked in a room for weeks at a time with only a blanket and a bucket to use the bathroom.

The shooting at a small white house off a dirt road in rural north Florida happened Monday while the children's parents were away for work. The father, a truck driver, and his wife, who often went with him, left the 16-year-old boy to watch over the 15-year-old, her 11-year-old sister and their 3-year-old sister, police said. The parents left Sunday and were due back Tuesday.

Sometime Monday, the 15-year-old girl was locked in her room by her brother, police said. After the boy fell asleep, she talked her 11-year-old sister into unlocking her door.

The older girl knew her parents kept a pistol in their room, but they had locked their door. So the girl went outside and used a knife to remove an air conditioner from her parents' bedroom window. She climbed in while her 11-year-old sister kept watch and grabbed the gun out of a pink bag and loaded it, police said.

Tragic situation all around. :(

People really need to know the purpose of a gun safe. But to go through all that trouble to acutally get the gun, can't say I blame her in those living conditions though.

Sad situation. Was it the brother or the parents that kept her locked up, wasn't quite clear on that.

The parents are going to take some responsibility here.

This girl was being abused at the hands of her brother it seems. You can't just leave minors home alone for extended periods of time.

The girls' mother told police they often locked the 15-year-old girl up when she misbehaved. The longest they kept her locked in her room was 20 consecutive days, the father told police.

wtf? The parents were abusing their daughter. You can't lock someone in a room for 20 days.

That's just a odd situation all around.
The brother was 1 year younger and the other 2 kids in the home didn't seem to be in that situation. Why exactly was the brother treating her that way?

wtf? The parents were abusing their daughter. You can't lock someone in a room for 20 days.

WTH.
That whole family sounds messed up.

"It was learned that (the 15-year-old girl) has made past attempts at ending her life but neither law enforcement nor (emergency management services) was notified," police wrote in their report.

holy shit

i hope the girl pulls through all this

Tragic yet i can't help but think this was a form of radical justice. The 11 year old probably hated what was being done to the sister, can't say i blame her either.

Yeah, you can. These people are teenagers. And most kids aren't going to abuse their siblings severely. That said, without knowing more of the story it's hard to say if there were reasons for the parents to be aware of what was going on, or if this was some unfortunate situation where the brother manipulated everyone into silence and the sister felt this was the only option to escape.

The girls' mother told police they often locked the 15-year-old girl up when she misbehaved. The longest they kept her locked in her room was 20 consecutive days, the father told police.

In the girl's room, police found only a blanket and a bucket filled with urine in the closet.

"It was learned that (the 15-year-old girl) has made past attempts at ending her life but neither law enforcement nor (emergency management services) was notified," police wrote in their report.

The girls were being held in juvenile detention on suspicion of murder and a prosecutor is trying to decide whether they will be charged as adults. Their parents face charges of child neglect and failing to supervise.

The 3-year-old is in the custody of child welfare officials.

Police documents released Wednesday said the girl's uncle was convicted of molesting her in 2010. They also say the children's mother discovered the siblings having sex in 2011. Authorities and child welfare officials investigated, but no one was charged.

Not trying to quote the whole thing but it dramatically changes how you view the girl.

Whole family is fucked. That's definitely child abuse on the parents, negligence on the parents (3yo taken care of by a 16 year old) and one big cluster fuck (sibling sex) and molestation.

My head hurts.

She buried her head in a pillow for a while and upon returning to the living room, the girl found her 3-year-old sister trying to wake her dead brother, according to the police report.

She fled with her 11-year-old sister, leaving the 3-year-old behind, police said.

:(

OP is missing some important stuff

I'm going to assume the parents and brother all abused her, especially if the younger sister kept watch, knowing what her older sis was going to do.

Fucking North Florida. :( I want to GTFO.

Edit: Fuck, the uncle too? And the mom caught them "having sex"? Something makes me feel like it wasn't mutual.

.....where do you even begin.

It sounds like a high explosive cocktail. Teens locked up and alone in a house, the older abusing the younger...

And I'm sorry.....but they're considering trying her as an adult?

From the outside it looks like she's been beaten, raped, imprisoned, and deprived all her life, even attempting suicide to escape.....at 15 years old. Where do you even begin to process this when it's happening in an allegedly civilised nation? I'm not saying she should get a free pass, but I think at this point you just need to try and protect what is going to turn out to be a very damaged young adult.

Also how do we know the brother was brought up with this being the norm? They could have done the same to him when he was younger. They could have also locked her up since she was little so the brother would know nothing different. Such a sad sitaution.

Perhaps she was "protecting" her sister. Her mom, going on long haul trucking rides to keep hubby happy sure wasn't.

The girl went back inside the house, telling her young sisters to get in the closet, she told police. She turned her head and fired at her sleeping brother in the living room, and he screamed "Help! Help!"

She buried her head in a pillow for a while and upon returning to the living room, the girl found her 3-year-old sister trying to wake her dead brother, according to the police report.

She fled with her 11-year-old sister, leaving the 3-year-old behind, police said.

"It's hard for us to get our arms around this act," Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter said. "This is the stuff nightmares are made of."

Police caught up with the girls after a friend of theirs received a "weird phone call" from the 11-year-old girl, saying she had run away and needed someone to pick her up from a Dollar General, according to a police report. When the woman arrived, she found the older sister there, too.

The older girl said something might have been wrong with another sibling at home. As she spoke, she applied makeup and "would not maintain eye contact and appeared emotionless," officers wrote in a police report.

She soon started crying and told the officers that her brother had beaten her and that she had shot him.

When officers arrived at the home, the 3-year-old said: "he's dead." The brother's body was lying near the fireplace, under a blanket with his head on a pillow.

The girls' mother told police they often locked the 15-year-old girl up when she misbehaved. The longest they kept her locked in her room was 20 consecutive days, the father told police.

Because of the girls' ages and abuse allegations, The Associated Press is not naming the girls, their brother or the parents.

I'm with you, she's been abused for a long time and the parents didn't seem to care, if they did she would have had help and we wouldn't be here posting.

I hope both girls get a new family that will love them and give them a chance to have normal lives.

But doesn't this make you think how the brother was brought up as well? In some cases people that carry out sexaul assaults are sexaully assaulted themselves.

umm this doesn't belong in a court. she needs help. not jail.

the parents, however lose all rights to be parents. now. take the remaining kids away and charge the parents with whatever you can find in the statutes.

if this goes to court with any sort of custodial sentence, that police dept, and DA have failed and should all be fired immediately.

i wonder if she reported anything to the authorities beforehand.
it's easy to say for me as someone who's not affected, but couldn't she just, you know ... leave?
not like running away is going to ruin her life any more than being a murderer.

heavily dysfunctional family anways ...

But doesn't this make you think how the brother was brought up as well? In some cases people that carry out sexaul assaults are sexaully assaulted themselves.
I would look into abuse for all family members. Including the parents who thought leaving kids alone for days after they were caught having sex was okay.

But doesn't this make you think how the brother was brought up as well? In some cases people that carry out sexaul assaults are sexaully assaulted themselves.

You are probably correct, he's a victim too but its too late for that now, at least the girls can be saved. Parents and Uncle, fucking hell.

wait, did I miss a whole part about sexual assault?

edit: yep, I did.

Wow this is incredibly messed up. I feel terrible for all the kids in this situation

That was a criminally inappropriate blurb you snipped there OP.

Seems that the parents (and the brother) regularly locked her in her room as a form of punishment and abuse, and she had been sexually assaulted by more than one individual in the household, including her brother.

Even with premeditation I don't see a jury convicting her of anything, she was essentially a prisoner.

Yea, quite horrible situation for that girl. No way she can be tried as an adult.

Hopefully her life isn't completely destroyed, and can be recover. For her there was no other solution as she saw it.

Shame it took the police until some one got killed to look to do something about it. Hopefully the police will do the right thing.

What the fuck
This is quite possibly the most depressing thing i've read in the past 30 days. What a horrible situation, no one deserves to be raised that way. Parents deserve a shit ton of the blame. :(

Wow. Crazy situation indeed. The parents definitely need the children taken away and charged with child endangerment. I feel really bad for that 3 year old little girl :(

wait, did I miss a whole part about sexual assault?
Read the article. Kids caught having sex in the past.

'I'm going to leave my 16, 15, 11, and 3 year old kids alone for days. What could go wrong?'
Responses:
'Oh wait, didn't uncle Jim fuck one of my kids?'
'Oh wait, didn't I catch two of my kids having sex together?'
'Oh wait, haven't I physically and emotionally abused my daughter by leaving her in a locked bed room for 20 days straight with only a bucket to piss in?'

I'm guessing none of those crossed their minds.

Tragic yet i can't help but think this was a form of radical justice. The 11 year old probably hated what was being done to the sister, can't say i blame her either.

Justice would have been if she shot the parents. Whatever the boy did, it was at the instructions of his parents.

This whole thing is horrible. The kids need to be re-homed and the parents fucking locked away. Bastards.

Fucking Florida... this is tragic, and I find it hard to blame the girl.

Justice would have been if she shot the parents. Whatever the boy did, it was at the instructions of his parents.

You don't know that... It's pretty normal for siblings with a little power to harass and abuse one another. Especially if they are raised in a horrible family situation like this one where abuse, neglect, and harassment seem to be the norm. The parents are ultimately to blame but we just don't know how far the boy went in his cruelty.
