I will never understand the appeal. I mean, she seems like a cool enough person but her music is just bland run-of-the-mill piano pop. Is it her voice? (which I personally don't like either) I don't hate her music, but I'm just really curious to know why everybody seems to adore her

Fantastic voice, relatable songs, appeals to all ages. What's hard to understand? I'd say you would have to be a tad run of the mill to hit such huge numbers.

Congrats to her.
Breaking all those records is kind of amazing when you think about it. Especially with music being on decline.

Continue to slay, my queen.
Shattering so many records. I'm very curious to see how the marketing and singles are handled in the coming months.

The fact that you think she is run of the mill pop just shows how little you know about pop, and music in general.

Her sound is dramatically different than what was around before her. Artists like Sam Smith and Emeli Sande are direct reactions to the trends she started with her bare bones production twist of jazz/r&b/pop.

I'm sorry if I offended you, but it really is just bland run-of-the-mill piano pop. There's nothing wrong with that, though - to each his own ;-).

Oh please, cut the condescension.

You are obviously just another pathetic music hipster who deems anything popular to be "generic" or "run of the mill".

Pull your head out of your own ass.

No, there's plenty of popular music I enjoy. But please, continue being a hypocrite by condescending me and calling me a pathetic music hipster. I don't think your music taste is bad if you listen to Adele, I don't call her fans 'inferior'... I have absolutely no idea why you're being this defensive. It's just an opinion. Actually, I think it's good for her that she sold this many albums; I have absolutely no reason not to.

who the fuck even runs that twitter account

I didn't realize NSYNC still existed as a group or organization

Is it just supposed to be the idea of NSYNC tweeting about stuff? The mental image of a former boy band giving its opinions on things?

WOW, she smashed ALL the records, and she basically doubled the former worldwide record.

Accurate GIF is accurate.

But seriously, I love that Adele is a Pop music fan, and particularly a Britney and Spice Girl fan.

She could probably hold her own over in the POPGAF thread.

You say "you'll never understand the appeal". Smarten up; I'm not a fan of Adele to understand how her appeal is fucking huge. a 10 year old kid, a 30 year old woman, and a 80 year old granny can listen to an Adele album and like it. That's all there is to it.

Start naming your favorite artists. I'm sure lots will laugh about your taste in music and also ask themselves "I don't understand the appeal". The difference is that they probably are not selling over 3 million copies.

Definitely shows, something like 47% is physical. If it does go on to do 3.5m first week, that's about 1.65m physical first week, that alone puts it above Britney and top 5.

In 2015.

No, I will never understand her appeal. And really, I wouldn't care if people wouldn't understand the appeal of my favorite artists either. I was just genuinely curious what makes her stand out from the rest, which according to you is that 'everybody listens to her' (which still doesn't really answer my question, but sure, it's better than nothing).

Universal appeal. No race, color, language boundaries. Music that is simple and pleasing to the ear. The singer is a good looking woman who doesn't need gimmicks to sell. Relatable themes and memorable melodies.

What is there to understand? haha.

Don't, he'll never get it lol. What's to get tho, it is what it is and she obviously IS appealing to millions around the globe.

She's basically this generation's Céline Dion but with more USA relevance.

Bleh, she's less sickly than Celine.

Ok, sure, if that is what the rest sees in her, I can go with that answer. Thanks.

Or the power of not streaming? I wonder how many other artists are gonna ditch Spotify/iTunes cuz of this.

Celine Dion was never as big as Adele... and no this isn't a fat joke.
As I just said, she is bigger in the USA than Céline Dion was. There is a reason she has two albums that have sold more than 30 million copies.. not including the Titanic soundtrack that sold off My Heart Will Go On alone.

Playing it safe remains a way to success. Meh.

One of those albums people will pick up in 40 years after reading a list of best-selling albums and with a baffled expression go "this thing sold.. what? I listened through and can't remember a single thing".

I'm pretty sure these kind of albums will still sell in 40 years.

Just a coincidence, or did you see this argument, too?

I don't have any trouble seeing her mass appeal (I've bought her albums, after all). I'm more mystified by the acclaim she receives for her voice.
I honestly hadn't, thanks, I'll give it a read.

Honestly, Adele's 21 sold more copies comparatively in their timeframe than most of the highest selling albums ever. She genuinely is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, artists ever. For a song as bland as Hello to sell that much first week speaks to that. She has a great voice though, nothing as amazing as Amy Winehouse on her best, better than most of the other female singers of her generation. I wouldn't say she is Barbra Streisand tier or anything but she has her good performances more than her bad.

Sam Smith and Emile Sande aren't reactions to Adele so much as the latest descendants in a long line of blue-eyed soul singers from Dido to Joss Stone to Amy Winehouse to Duffy that have grimly dominated the British charts for decades. Quite frankly I can't think of an artist more blatantly groomed for local success than Adele in recent memory.

What's remarkable about Adele isn't that singing MOR retro-soul has proved popular but that she's managed to globally crossover in a way her fellow Brit School alumni couldn't. I don't know if that's down to her or more generally a consequence of the times.

Eh. Both of Celine's 30m worldwide albums sold in excess of 10 million in the U.S., and 21 is at 11m. It's not that big a difference if we're talking about album sales.

With Era adjustments put in place, 21 completely eclipses the sales of Celine's 30M albums around the world-- even Canada/France. Without Era adjustments put in place, 21 still did better in most parts of the world.

Heh, interesting you bring this up, as Adele was originally considered to be one of the pop stars riding the Amy Winehouse soundalike bandwagon, along with Duffy, Estelle, Gabriella Cilmi, etc. Amazing that she managed to turn herself into one of the biggest artists of this century.
