Heh, interesting you bring this up, as Adele was originally considered to be one of the pop stars riding the Amy Winehouse soundalike bandwagon, along with Duffy, Estelle, Gabriella Cilmi, etc. Amazing that she managed to turn herself into one of the biggest artists of this century.

I wonder how much it has to do with Amy Winehouse fizzling out and becoming a less-marketable drug addict. Would Adele be this popular with Winehouse as a relevant artist?

This image was published when the projections were around 2.5 Million:

Taking what we know about the most recent album's debut numbers-- 1989 (1.287)... I'd say the adjustments lean towards today's sales units being worth 3x what they were in the late 90s/early 00s.

I'm not good with math, though.

I see. I guess my problem is that it seems a bit facile. It's not like the only thing that has changed is that album sales have plummeted; singles sales have also exploded by comparison. Today it's easy to think of female singers whose albums to singles sales are 1:3.25 or 1:5 or whatever; if you look at the big names of the 1980s or 1990s you'll see those numbers reversed: 3:1 or 2:1 or something. I'm not a music sales historian or anything, but it just seems to me that doing an adjusted apples to oranges comparison lends itself to something more complex than just "multiply album sales by three."

Amy wasn't a marketable artist like Adele, drug issues aside, you could tell she was incredibly uncomfortable with being a celebrity in her interviews. I think Adele would almost always certainly rise to prominence.

Anyone who destroys Taylor Swift's music is fine with me.

Dude, calling this "mom music" is selling Adele very, very short. It should be very clear that Adele is multi-demographical.

Still nothing on 1989. Sell all the shit you want but this album is filled with uninspired songs. It feels too much like trying to rehash 21, but not working.

Adele didn't break Utada's old record. She chucked it off the top of the Hell in a Cell cage onto the Spanish Announce Table, leaving it with broken bones and internal bleeding while JR is freaking the fuck out.
Utada did it when she was 18 years old in 1 country though.

That being said, this post would have been perfect with the Be My Last car crash gif.

I will never understand the appeal. I mean, she seems like a cool enough person but her music is just bland run-of-the-mill piano pop. Is it her voice? (which I personally don't like either) I don't hate her music, but I'm just really curious to know why everybody seems to adore her

I think one of the main reasons for her success is how she is able to reach the older market.

I'm still trying to figure out why so many are amazed by Adele singing. We have and have had singers that sound just as good if not better that don't get half the attention she is getting but then again we can say that for a lot of the biggest singers, still, I listened to her first album and I did not find it remarkable at all.

Just listened to 'Hello' on YouTube as I realised I had not heard it yet (don't listen to the radio much or follow popular music) and was amazed to see that in just a month it has over 500,000,000 views (500 million). That's insane. Soon it'll be up there with the most played songs on YouTube bar Gangnam Style.

I'm not sure anyone cares, but I find it interesting - when I wrote the above post Hello was at about 503 million views, and it's now at over 555 million. So in four days it's had over 50 million views, which I find an insane number. At this rate it'll be nearing a billion in just over a month.
