Finally more details are out on Adventure Player for the PSP from From Software.

Basically the game engine comes out on June 30th in Japan for 3990yen (about 40 USD) and will be loaded with 3 games, 2 being original and 1 being Echo Night #1. The Adventure Player Studio will then be released online for free to allow budding game designers to create graphical text adventure games on their PC and subsequently distribute them online for others to play on the PSP. The engine fully supports imported objects like sound and images (and maybe even video) and complex scripting. The engine will also allow designers to script puzzles and so on. AWESOME! :D

WOW! That's awesome! Once it's out, you'll all need to...

...and make some games!

This looks like it has a lot of potential, and depending on how flexible (and complex) the Adventure Player Studio will be, I can see it really flourishing. It could maybe even bring about a mini-revival of the adventure genre. [who am I kidding? :lol]

I wonder if it'll allow a battle system of some sort to be implemented? If that could be achieved through scripting, then I think From will garner support from the RPG fanbase too.

Fuck me in the goat ass, this looks shit hot!!!

edit: hope someone translates/hacks this, because there's nothing worse than programming game logic in Japanese

graphical text adventures? oh.

I was hoping for something that might actually allow RPG generation, maybe akin to their King's Field series.

Me too, but I think one limiting factor they might be looking at would be space. Maybe if this takes off and when people all have larger memory sticks they might release something like Sword of Moonlight on the PSP.

That looks quite excellent, and scripting means that even if it's missing a feature, people will probably figure out a way to implement it if it's wanted enough.

RPG Maker and Fighter Maker both received US releases on the PS2, so there's always a chance this'll see a niche release. A budget price would suit it well and help improve impulse buys.

This lets you import graphics and sound though, based on what you posted. I'd imagine that's just as much a hit for storage, as if you were building levels using a predefined 3d engine and scripting tool.

I'd still be interested to try this out if it made its way to the States.

Yes if you want to create a huge and detailed game it would definitely be a hit, but the graphical text adventure nature allows you to create smaller games that would fit into smaller memory sticks easily. With a full 3D RPG enviroment you would need a large memory stick to create even the most simple games. That's how I see it anyway, definitely picking this up to play around with. :D

Now the benefits of a portable console including support for a relatively large Re-Writeable memory device (support for Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick Pro Duo devices in this case) starts to show (including downloadable content that you can keep permanently).

I think GameBoy Next will have an SD slot if Nintendo is smart.

Here are more details:

System requirements of the Adventure Player Studio are set at Windows 2000/XP and above, Pentium III 600Mhz or equivalent (1Ghz and up recommended), 128meg of RAM (256meg and above recommended), 1024x768 display and above at 16-bit hicolor and up, and at least 90meg of free disk space.

Moreover Sony will be encouraging 3rd party developers who wish to, to support Adventure Player by using the studio to develop adventure games that can be distributed online. Althi will be porting some of their adventure games to the PSP using the Adventure Player Studio, including the old classic JB Harold's Murder Club. A few other games announced include Tryangle Road (a puzzle game), Love*Love Smileyface (a romantic advventure), IQ Test (an IQ testing game), and Welcome to English (English learning software?). I doubt these would be free but it's a very good use of the software and online distribution systems for the PSP should definitely be supported.

:lol

More screenshots from the packed in games at Gpara show off the possibility of creating map interfaces with compass and all for pseudo-firstperson adventure games! :D

<damn Gpara took their pics down>

1 million plus porn adventures coming right up!

Wow! That was the worst trailer I've ever seen in my life! 3 mins of power-point presentation and THEY DON'T SHOW THE DAMN GAME. >_<

And if they were smart they'd put the PC side program up for download NOW. Get people interested in making games and then they'll be running out to buy the PSP thing right away.

Dude, what game? It's an engine software, not a game. If you're buying Adventure Player for the 3 "free" games included, you have issues. :lol

Uh, huh. You'd still want to show examples in motion of what you can create. The thing is that trailer comes off like a Photoshop trailer that would never show post-photoshop pictures which would be ridiculous.

I see they mention "LAN" on one of the site pages...is this going to let you transfer adventures wirelessly to other PSPs by any chance?

From what's shown in the screen shots, the programming/logic aspect seems very limited. It reminds me of Macromedia Flash, or something like Powerpoint. Still, this is a good sign for the return of the adventure game genre. I think alot of interesting or funny stuff can come from this.

Holy crap! J.B. F-ing Harold!

"I finished my shift at nine o'clock, changed clothes, and went home. What can I tell you? I lead a dull life!" -Delivered in worst jive-turkey voice acting imaginable

Man, that brings back some major great TG-16 CD memories. I like this now.

JB HAROLD!! I learned what "rape" meant thanks to that game! I never solved the mystery, though. Got to the very end. Narrowed it down to two suspects, but I could never get a confession outta either of 'em! If anyone here has finished it and could tell me who the heck the real killer was I'd appreciate it tons.

Very cool.

I wish they had a Mac version, too.
Does it support animations LucaArt style or just text+images?
Someone should convert all infocom adventures to this format, although typing commands could be tedious on PSP...

You don't have to type it really. You could have a list of commands you can select from like in the Spellcasting series. And even that can be optimized - things like PUSH, PULL, TURN, OPEN, etc can be simplified to USE.

I know, but the great thing about infocom games was that you could type almost anything and get some interesting result. Having a list of the available commands would spoil the fun. Plus, the list would be so big to make it harder to navigate. I think some kind of auto completion could be better.

Ok then, you can use the PSP OS's data entry system yourself. Have fun. :P

You did a pretty good job with the translation despite what you thought.

Yeah the project files of those two games will be included so you can edit them to make your own original versions.

A DS equivalent of this would be nice...

1) Touchscreen for command prompts
2) Nintendo could release their archives of bizarre graphical adventure games (Famicom Detective Club, etc. etc. etc.)

The Studio will be released both on a CD with the game and available for download online. The difference being that as you said, the two project files will be on the CD but not be available in the online version. :D

Wait ... will this thing directly output signed executables?

HAX ATTAX

This is more of a guess as to how it works but...

No. What you create on the PC isn't an executable but a package with scripts, images, and sounds that is played by the engine (the signed executable) on the disk.

This would be positively awesome if it came out here, but I'm guessing that's unlikely, since the they'd have to translate three games as well as the software itself.

except the DS doesn't have any kind of rewritable storage to speak of.
