Alice: Madness Returns |OT|

That Dead Space needs to support flightsticks?

That plugged in controllers should not under any circumstances mess with the current game you are playing, especially when said game doesn't let you fix the problem even though hacking the config files.

perfomance on 360? I'm tempted.

Besides the UE3 texture pop-ins that we are use to now in a way and some muddy low textures in some area`s(don`t look at some walls too much in this game, looks like N64 bluriness at times)it runs pretty well...the physics are all there and framerate is a steady 30,thank god with all the precise platforming needed hehe...

I don't have the game, but this was posted earlier in the thread:

documents/my games/alice madness returns/config

open 'aliceEngine.ini' with notepad

look for MaxSmoothedFrameRate and change it to 60
(edited to add a space and add .ini)

That MaxSmoothedFrameRate variable should probably apply for some/most UE3 games. I'm not really sure why they'd lock it to 30 to begin with.

Really torn on whether to get this or not. The mixed reviews aren't particularly encouraging, but it just looks so damn appealing; the sort of thing that's right up my alley. I've been burnt by Duke Nukem Forever recently, so I don't really want to risk forking out another 35-40 quid for something I may end up hating.

Wait and buy it on a Steam sale! (haw haw haw haw)

More seriously, wait until the price drops if you're not sure and there's no demo. I think EA games have tended to go down in price relatively quickly compared to say, Activision games.

Ditto...I love the look of the game but I know that will probably ware off quickly and the rest of the gameplay doesn't hold up then I will regret it.

I wouldnt be suprised to see it at 20-30 dollars on PC in a month or two from now.

Locked at 30 I heard.

Yes, you can unlock it to 60. Runs great and I'm on a 5770. I suspect with a higher end nVidia it will run great with better physx.

Fucking love this game. The story presentation is TOP NOTCH. Cutscenes, voice work, style. It just drips. Combat is fun as hell to.

I'm torn between getting this on the PC and getting it on the consoles..

I have a good gaming machine, but no physx.. plus this game seems like it might play better from a couch with a controller.

edit -

i'm leaning towards 360.. downloadable original game is pushing me in that direction..

Haven't read the whole thread, but I have this game on the way from Gamefly.... should I spend the ten bucks for the old one? Has anyone played it? Any improvements or is it like so many of these up-res'd rereleases you see today?

How is the framerate on the consoles? Specifically the PS3 version...some videos looked choppy but I couldnt tell if it was the encoding or the game itself...

Go in to My Documents>My Games>Alice Madness Returns>AliceGame>Config>AliceEngine.ini and change

"MaxSmoothedFrameRate" to 60. You can also disable things like Motion Blur in there, which for me cut the framerate down a bit.

If I were to buy this game would the original Alice be included on the disc or would I have to download it? I don't have an internet connection to my 360, so that could cause a problem.

It's a download (just under a gig), but you could cart your 360 to an internet-enabled friend's, perhaps?

The PC version has the original Alice...only if you buy it from EA's service.

Side note about this sort of UE3 config file editing: Mirror's Edge, Borderlands, most any UE3 game I know of will occasionally overwrite your config file (based on whether the game updates, and/or some magical details involving file timestamps). So if you make changes, it's a good idea to backup the .ini file or at least make a note of which values you changed in case the game deletes all your settings.

On the fence here too... I have a 10$ gift card to use on a new game soon and I want to trade in Dirt3 before its value drops too much.

But I'd like to do all that for a good game. :|

For those of you who didnt play the first one, are you playing the first one first, or diving straight into Madness returns?
Trying to get some answers about the first one before I start playing this evening.

I was pretty iffy on the first one back then but the sequel looks like Darksiders and is something I might want to check out. GiantBomb quicklook sold me on it for sure.

Score is pretty amazing. Wow. Do they plan to put it up on itunes/amazon?

Also, kinda surprised at the physx stuff. I cant run it on because im on ATI cards but any comment on that from anyone? Does it make a big difference?

They released Vrenna's original Alice themes as an OST, so hopefully it'll at least make it to a digital format. And yeah, it's a brilliant treatment, up there with Reznor's themes for Quake.

Moral of the story: if your game needs a dark ambient soundtrack, hire NIN guys.

I tried it out last night. It was pretty good. I didn't notice any major frame drops. I only played for about 10 minutes due to grocery shopping (fuuuuuuu, groceries got expensive!).

I checked out the original game as well. Lovin' it!

Vrenna was a great part of the earlier NIN stuff. His tweaker solo stuff is amazing. Did he do the OST for the new Alice game as well?

The violin stuff reminds me A LOT of Rule of Rose. Actually, a lot of the atmosphere gives me a similar feeling.

Yup, with the exception of the violin theme on the front end. It was the first thing I checked when I booted it up (added bonus: the track on the credits is tremendous.)

My girlfriend just came home on her lunch break and surprised me with this game. She's awesome.
PS3 version and it's installing now...I wish it was optional because it takes too damn long.

Anyway, can't wait to play!

Played all the way up to the second chapter and so far its pretty damn fun! Hopefully it continues... what a tease though at the end of the first chapter. :(

So far my favorite bits are the
"present day" bits in White Chapel London. Man, I would kill for something more substantial. I want this team to do it too.

Would one of you kind ladies or gentlemen do me a favor? I am currently at a location where lens of truth is blocked. My google search shows it has an Alice head2head (screenshot comparison at least). I am picking this up today and am wondering whether to go ps3 or 360. Could someone bebop over there and tell me which they preferred? thanks in advance.

Yeah! I wanna hear how it is, from someone who played the original. :)
I never played the original American McGee's Alice other than the first 15 minutes. I would like to know if they've changed anything in the remake. If so, I'd be interested in downloading it and giving it a shot. Can't get impressions from anyone on here though, has ANYONE downloaded it?

played like 4+ hours so far it's pretty good.

Solid story telling, the story is very interesting so far( there is nothing really in the start but that how it supposed to be) but thing went completely insane, American McGee still has it I guess, the graphics are pretty great for UE3 game( Wonderland has freaking amazing level design, one of the best this gen), and the hair is magnificent, but I am kinda disappointed they didn't use the hair on real world Alice, but I understand why.

Refreshing and unique in this age of gaming, Alice kept the old structure of games before they went porn style of "Do something-cutscenes-do something" and is very faithful of American McGee's Alice, it's clearly for the fans of the first game and not just for the new comers like the sequels these days, combat can be repetitive but the platforming and exploration break that most of the time.

It's not easy game, If you fight carelessly you will die (checkpoints are good I think), it will not go easy with you, the mini boss are not easy too, the game require attention and playing carefully, the old style 3D platforming is also not Mario easy, again this is something we do see much these days, the platforming in the game require skill, timing and precision.

The only problem for me is the lack of weapons, game needed more crazy weapons to be honest, other than that it's what I wanted from Alice sequel, a hard faithful sequel for the fans of the first game and not for the casuals or new guys with more locations from Wonderland.

I bought Madness Returns on Origin :O So I have the original included. Booted it up last night and it seems to be the same but there is native support for modern resolutions in the options screen now. No ini or cfg file changes needed.

You have to launch it after launching madness returns though and when you quit it it reloads madness return's menu.

I would really love to get this game when I have money, but I'm not sure whether to get the PS3 or PC version. Are there any glaring negatives for either version?

PS3 has comfy couch, analog controllers (that I don't have to set up), free game, and I enjoy playing games more on there anyway.
PC has better graphics including PhysX. But it's not on Steam...

...I guess Portal 2 really spoiled me. :(

get ps3 version if you have an HDTV. Alice 1 looks great on it.

It's good. It seems like some textures have been replaced, the resolution is better, and some of the charecter faces are improved. The game also has trophy/achievement support now. Controls take a few minutes to get used to. It also has a few bugs but its not a deal breaker.

If your gonna play Alice 1 my recommendation is to SAVE often since the game only autosaves when you enter a new world.

thanks ricker, i appreciate it. kind of wish i had picked this up instead of duke (even though i am enjoying duke quite a bit). it's not really a wallet problem, more of a backlog problem. each time i pick up a new game my backlog stares disapprovingly.

How the hell do you do the umbrella block with the 360 pad? It's not even listed.

EDIT: Nevermind, you just hold A. That makes complete sense. :p
