Alien Covenant Trailer Released

I don't see how this is offering anything over any other Aliens film apart from Fassbender.

Discover aliens, aliens get on ship, infect everyone, kill almost everyone, last person alive kills alien but not really.

Yeah, watching the trailer I felt like I'd seen this before. I mean, it might be good but at this point I'm not going to bother having expectations for it.

So, it definitely looks as if this is going to be the case:

If Prometheus was ALIEN's "The Phantom Menace,"
then Alien: Covenant is going to be its "Attack of the Clones."

I hate this qualifier as if we can't criticize something as long as it isn't the worst movie ever made. My bar isn't so high as to expect the greatest movie ever made. It's to expect an entertaining and coherent movie, a bar which Prometheus failed to pass. I would only give it entertaining because I like seeing new worlds, new sci fi stuff, and people dying.

It wasn't a qualifier of anything just really tired of the ridiculous hyperbole, Prometheus didn't meet the hype of those who still hold the original Alien as the Holy Grail of Sci-Fi. For me and most (according to critical reviews) it was more than competent. it had entertaining moments whilst looking quite spectacular.

So, it definitely looks as if this is going to be the case:

See what I mean

Compared to Prometheus' trailer, this was very disappointing. It's hard to get excited for this.

To clarify, and these are huge spoilers that reveal the main mystery and plot point of the film.
He's responsible for creating the proto eggs and facehugger because he's been experimenting with the black goo since they arrived on the Planet to create the perfect organism. He has a lab or workshop of horrors of his experiments beneath the engineer citadel.

The neomorphs or new xenos are the by products of him unleashing the black goo as a bioweapon on the planet to infect and wipe out the engineers. The black spores being the result.

A few test screenings have already happened which is where these spoilers come from. Those "in the know" like the AvPGalaxy crew, who broke the James Franco news, claim they're legit and a lot of details mentioned have come to fruition via this trailer and press reports on the other footage.

I actually remember reading a theory like this once, on what happens after Prometheus. And in itself that doesn't sound too bad... It just sucks that apparently the Engineers get dropped completely. I mean, the main thrust behind a possible Prometheus sequel was always that we were going to learn more about them. Now it's just: fuck all that, let's start with a ship crew again and explain some stuff through flashbacks.

I was hoping this would be its rogue one moment

Does that mean David is Jar Jar/Anakin/palpating and the galactic senate rolled into one ?

Considering the first two films in the series are some of the best ever and that they set a lot of tropes look etc of sci fi films going forward and having the director from the first film and his pedigree many of us where excited and overjoyed to find out the origin of the xenomorphs etc but what we go instead was a great looking film with a scant crap story. even as a stand alone film the story doesn't make sense fully (I guess the screen writer is famous for writing scripts then removing half the story to allow the audience to fill in the blanks) it looked nice it was just a bad story.

Ridley Scott is one of the greatest directors ever visually he is one of the best but Prometheus has a turd for a story. Never once have I heard anyone say that film was badly shot or it looked crap it was the story/script that killed it.

As for the hate for it. Star Wars prequels??

Honestly, yeah Alien is a terrific film and beautifully shot but I've only come to appreciate the real mvp Dan O'Bannon. Again I wish he was still around just to read or hear his thoughts on this and Prometheus. lol

The alien in the shower sex scene was so stereotypical, that was a disappointment.

The whole thing is a big stereotype.

- "Open the door please I beg you I'm gonna die" "lol no"
- Here's when he's infected do you see it HERE A FUCKING CLOSE UP OF THE SPORE GOING IN HIS EAR PLEASE UNDERSTAND MY MOVIE
- Explosions!
- Sex in the shower oops we forgot there's an alien running around

See what I mean

I see that you're upset people don't like a movie you like and are openly discussing their dislike of it.

I don't see your insinuation my dislike of the film is rooted in anything but it's overall quality as having much merit.

I think my comparison is sound, by the way. The Phantom Menace isn't a good movie. In fact, it's pretty bad in a lot of ways. But it also has a fair amount of shit going for it. So does Prometheus.

Attack of the Clones was a follow-up that seemed to take all its predecessor's criticisms straight to heart, and the film wound up trying to steer into the skid to right itself, and ended up going straight into a ditch.

That's what this looks like. "Oh, they want ALIENS II and xenomorphs and gross shit and facehuggers, huh? Alright. They'll get it."

I have an idea just make a simple scary movie no gimmicks don't try and make it too smart or convoluted just try and make the audience shit themselves in fear that's al I want.

My thoughts exactly. It's a god damn shame to see what's happened to Ridley.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who enjoyed Prometheus quite a bit.

Take it for what it is and it's actually a pretty decent movie. Probably shouldn't have been sold on the Alien franchise though, could have worked just as well as a standalone/side story to the main franchise or a whole new franchise

I wanted to enjoy it but I couldn't

It's not decent it's more subpar it left a lot out and well the geolist getting stoned and the idiot touching the vagina snake was a stupid scene. Must stop myself with opening the old wounds.

Oh Christ help me,

I have no horse in this race, I am not going to bat for Prometheus, I'm just tired of warped scale of entertainment medium on here, its either the greatest thing ever or the bane of all cosmic existence, it was just OK

- like I said, the hyperbole is out of hand - nothing deserves to be compared to Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones

No this does deserve to be compared to those films

Consider the directors of both those franchises coming back to give you the origins of some of the most iconic characters in cinematic history. Both step up both miss the mark.

Its been 24 years since a watchable one, and over 30 since a good one, so apparently it is.

Some of the concepts there like
David experimenting with xenomorphs and "communicating" with them
could work if done right, but I don't have a lot of hope since Prometheus. A focus on the Engineers could have been really cool and opened up a lot of new opportunities as a franchise, even if it wouldn't be Alien exactly.
But it seems like they're shoving the Engineers aside as fast as they can
, and it kinda makes Prometheus seem even more pointless now.

Kinda reminds of the Terminator franchise, in a way. Two great original films that set up a lot to work with and yet every sequel seems to add increasingly bizarre and unappealing story and design choices.

Suppose I'll wait and see how reviews and receptions on the film pan out. Hopefully the new Blade Runner is good, at least.

Bullshit. Own your stance, dude.

like I said, the hyperbole is out of hand - nothing deserves to be compared to Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones

Well now who's being hyperbolic? nothing deserves to be compared to two disappointing movies? Especially when my description of one of them includes the phrase "it has a fair amount of shit going for it?"

How hyperbolic is your opinion on Attack of the Clones and Phantom Menace then if you're reacting this negatively to the mere possibility someone might compare another movie to them?

Because while they're both disappointing, mostly bad movies, it's not as if they're abominations unto film. They're botched blockbusters. Neither film was anywhere near the worst films released in their YEARS, much less all time.

If you're going to dismiss the parallels to these similar-ish situations out-of-hand because of your own hyperbolic takes on those two prequels, that's not my bad.

Despite some flaws Prometheus looked stunning and I was excited to learn more about some of the awesome visuals / ideas explored .

To see they have seemingly ditched all that and just fine back to a marines vs aliens is kind of disappointing .

This trailer really suggest those story spoilers are real. Oh no...

Yep. When I read them I thought they sounded bogus and utterly ridiculous, so I had a good chuckle. Then AvPGalaxy said they were legit because of details they knew about and that had not publicly been shared before. The trailer, interviews and preview reports only confirmed it more. :(

Scott has always been hit or miss. People tend to forget that for every Alien and Blade Runner there was a Robin Hood or Exodus in-between.

Oh yeah, far more duds than hits. It's just a bit insane that he made two of the absolutely greatest films of all time within 3 years of eachother, Alien and Blade Runner, and then went into mediocrity straight afterwords with only a few great films that were still nowhere near those two. Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, and Kingdom of Heaven D.C. are pretty much it.

And it looks like both men somehow managed to make the next prequel even worse than the first one. It those leaks are true, it might make me nostalgic for the first AvP film. At least that one had a decent fight with the Queen at the end.

It really can't be that hard to make a good Alien movie.

Actually it probably is that hard. There's really not much you can do with such a limited IP, so naturally they just keep recycling the same stuff. It's a miracle and a testament to Cameron's talent at the time that the first sequel was as good as it was. But it set up the false notion that there should be a "franchise" around Alien.

I don't think Alien should be a franchise any more than I think there should be a franchise around The Godfather or 2001. I don't think there is anything to be gained in learning more about the titular aliens, the androids, or anything else in the Alien universe. In fact I think it's better left to the imagination. Sometimes less is more.

But there's clearly an audience for an Alien franchise since they making these movies, so what do I know. I'll just happily ignore this movie like I do for the others.

So the trailer outright spoiled three deaths. Not the best.

But it looks very pretty. And the casting is good. Should be a fun time at least.

I still don't understand why Ridley is continuing down the path of explaining the Alien's origins in such detail. When Ash talked about the "perfect organism" in Alien, it was supposed to be an example of the ruthlessness of evolution, that in the darkest reaches of space this thing managed to survive and hone itself into the ultimate predator. It wasn't supposed to be a test-tube experiment of one of the company's own fucking robots.

I'm also not feeling Waterston at all, her expression is always completely blank.

Paradise is hidden inside this movie somewhere. The xenomorph veneer is for trailer purposes only. The project won't be profitable if the nostalgic bots aren't lured to the theaters.

Had it pointed out to me on twitter that if we follow my prequels comparison to their logical conclusion, the last prequel before ALIEN is going to end with the giant-size Engineer on LV-426 being DAVID, somehow. The entirety of the Prometheus/Covenant/Prometheus 3 trilogy will have existed solely to explain how that jockey ended up on Acheron with a hole in his chest and a ship full of eggs, just like the Prequel Trilogy ended up existing solely to explain how Darth Vader ended up in a suit on a Star Destroyer watching a Death Star get built.

Already did,

Weak shit, man.

Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you as well.

I've been waiting for that gif to be used 😂

As someone who gets a fair amount of enjoyment out of Prometheus but recognises it as flawed, I'm staying cautiously optimistic about this.

To be fair I think the sex/shower scene was originally written for Alien. I have a few books about the making of Alien, will see what I can find. Maybe not right now because, you know, Christmas.

Pretty disappointed. The art direction doesn't seem to be nearly as amazing as Prometheus yet it seems to retain the quality of its writing. :( could certainly be wrong about both though, here's hoping.
