I don't even know who Karnak is, but I'm in for however many issues Warren Ellis is interested in doing.

Lots of semi-interesting books coming up, but a lot of things I'm not interested in either. Still more interesting to me than DC post-convergence though.

I want to read Karnak cause of Ellis but man I don't know if I'll be able to get over Karnak's big ass head.

This spring, the crossover that had to happen.

Speaking as a Spider-Man fan, I loved every single potshot Zdarsky took at Peter in his Howard the Duck run. Can't wait for more.

I only picked up Invincible Iron Man this past week. Didn't really like it at all. I'll give it one more issue.

Karnak is a member of Attilan's Inhuman Royal Family. He takes the role of adviser to the family. His Inhuman power is the ability to perceive any weakness or flaw in anything physical or conceptual. He's also a very skilled martial artist, and his signature attack is a karate-chop-style attack that directly strikes the weak point of whatever physical object/person he attacks. He also developed his powers without passing through Terrigenesis like all other Inhumans, though he is still Inhuman (despite what Warren Ellis says), as he still possesses the standard attributes; such as enhanced strength, speed, agility, and reflexes (said to be slightly higher than Captain America), as well as the actual DNA that all Inhumans share. He's also a member of a high ranking scholar family, and is very much quite the philosopher.

He's a boss. I'm looking forward to the book because it's about a character I liked, but based on Warren Ellis believing that the character isn't actually an Inhuman (a blatant lack of knowledge on the character), I'm nervous about a potential retcon in the future.

I'm going to be continuing with Amazing Spider-Man and Invincible Iron Man, need to decide which Avengers book to go for you. The rest I'll read on MU in six months.

Do we know if the post-Secret Wars mainline Marvel Universe is 616 again? Dr. Strange #1 confirms that universes are still using numbered designations.

Until proven otherwise I'm assuming they have found the Dragon Balls and wished the world back to its pre-SW state.

Supposedly the main earth is called universe 8. Which if true, is pretty hilarious

Is there some kind of significance to using that designation?

yep. right before secret wars ended dc had an event called multiversity which stuctured the at the time dc multiverse. it was apparent that hickman and morrison had been talking to each other when priming said events(the great society being dc analogs down to the hopeful nature, and dc having "multiverse 2" being destroyed the exact same week as time runs out ends) but at the end of multiversity we are reintroduced to earth 8

a universe fighting against the evil trying to destroy the multiverse

and earth 7

a universe that had failed, and was reduced to zombies

Oh sweet, I've been wanting this every since DC did it. Gives a very casual comic book fan like me a chance of getting into it without being confused as fuck.

Would I need to read whatever that secret wars thing is as a starting point?

It's not a reboot like DC's was.

Isn't that exactly what DC did? "restart" all their comics

No, they rebooted their universe and continuity. This reboots numbering. Hell they reboot numbering 12 issues into a series to boost sales.

Thanks for the responses. Dissapointing that it's apparently not more than a rebranding basically.

Also reread the OT, missed that part about this new line taking place 8 months after whatever. So basically it's just a timeskip for all their comics, meh meh meh...

Whenever a new run on a book starts, usually the beginning of a new arc or status quo, a book will end up starting with a #1. Both Marvel and DC do this regularly, because it helps new readers to jump in and they can easily bundle story arcs to more conveniently sell to readers by helping them to more easily digest character books and therefore get more invested and buy more books. Most of the time, this is done sparingly. Events like this let them do it en masse.

What DC did with the New 52 was completely reboot all continuity to create a more serialized and integrated universe with less confusing storytelling. Then Grant Morrison did Multiversity and Convergence happened shortly afterwards.

Marvel did not do a New 52, they just used an event as a new status quo to start a whole bunch of new #1's. The title of the OT is sarcastic.

Wut, now the OT seems very confusing to me.

What is it then?

All series are going back to issue #1, but past continuity is staying in tact. Most series are getting new creative teams as well. Generally, you can start reading any comic book at the beginning of a new creative team's run in the series, so restarting new series with new teams and new #1s means that it's easy for new readers to jump in and read multiple series concurrently.

Don't feel intimidated that continuity hasn't been reset. They're stories about guys in costumes punching other guys in costumes. If you're interested in reading comics then just pick up one of these series or get an MU subscription and look up good runs for characters you're interested in.

When you read comics, for the most part, you want to think about it in terms of different runs. Someone will tell you you need to read Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four or Matt Fraction's Iron Man. Modern comics are written well, and they tell you everything you need to know if you come in at the beginning of when a certain writer came on. That's how Marvel has been doing things line-wide since around 2003. Sometimes a run will tie in with an event, and maybe you want to read that event to get more context, or maybe you don't. A lot of the time, I don't. You have to be okay not knowing every single thing or Marvel superhero comics aren't for you.

yup
that's why the Secret Wars tie in where more interesting. Family Man Peter Parker

I think I will do my thread on the time Marvel really tired to be all new and all different
I'd argue 2001 (and the ass end of 2000) was a huge turning point, with them leaving the CCA, creating the MAX imprint, and having tonally and visually different books like Morrison's X-Men or Daredevil by Bendis/Maleev. And the Ultimate line, which was a bona fide attempt at a parallel reboot for moviegoers.

Morrison's X-men is visually the worst, though

That was the all-time worst era of mainstream Americab comic book art, with all that dark, muddy Top Cow style of coloring. That Frank D'Armata kind of shit that visually ruined a lot of good books.

That was also a time when everything was very serious and had long arcs. That was one of the worst times for variety in Marvel comics.

lol pretty much, at least for the big 2

im seriously only intrigued by Doc Strange. To see what Bachelo can do with Strange's world and psyche. I'm hoping for an evolution of his Steampunk art.

but really? "Gwenpool"

Gwenpool is basically just Marvel using a popular variant cover to push their holiday special book.

Quietly is the best visual storyteller in the medium. Go check out his Pax American. I read an analysis of the work and It blew my mind.

I thought Secret Wars was going to fix things, but I suppose that was never promised, making any changes on me for expecting them to get continuity on check.

I admit I was hoping maybe they would be able to resurrect characters like Prof X or Peter's marriage, but no.

It almost feels like the world is even harder to get into now.

So, what will Hickman write? I do not see his name on any of the new Marvel books. Please tell me he did not retire, just taking a break T_T

Did anyone else read Contest of Champions #1? If so do y'all know when in the continuity it is taking place, since it has characters from the main universe such as the current version of Tony Stark and his armor?
