All unlockers in the house, please allow me to bump thee.

So, I picked up Rogue Squadron 2 recently, and, damn if I have apparently lost all sense of patience since I played the first game on the N64 many moons ago.

Instead of playing through each mission over and over again, eventually becoming better and better at said mission and the gameplay in general, and then earning the bronze, then silver, and finally, after 15 months of gameplay every other weekend for a couple of hours, all gold medals, slowly unlocking the cooler "locked" levels in the process, I'm seriously tempted to just say screw it and enter in all the passcodes up front and have access to the game I paid for now, not next year.

I take great umbrage with a design philosophy that locks away entire levels of a game, dangling them in front of you like so many carrots on a stick. Well screw that, I want to play Death Star Escape now, not when I get good enough or have spent enough time at the game to unlock it.

Let this be an open letter to any and all game makers who may be considering "locking" away levels in an upcoming game as a means to artificially increase "gameplay". I hate you.

I'm the same way depending on the game.

I play games to enjoy them. If that's what it takes to enjoy the game, unlock your ass off.

I get what you're saying, but what you're paying for is not only the various maps and levels, etc. It's the experience the developers intend you to have. Part of that experience with RS2 is playing those levels over and over again until you get the best medals. That's the game.

Of course, Factor 5 DID provide codes for all that stuff, so it's not like they aren't keeping your interests in mind. It's not like F-Zero GX unlockables or something.

Ace Combat is a pretty good model of doing this right. You can get through all the main missions pretty easily, but if you want the "uber" planes, you need to work for them.

I do think that once you have played through the game, any game, you should be able to warp right to the level of your choosing. I just finished Ace Combat 5 last night and I'm happy to say that they let you do that. Mission 10 is just so damn pretty.

Believe me, I am infinitely thankful for this fact. I just don't have the time these days to play to unlock anymore, not like I did back when Rogue Squadron 1 came out.

Where's that picture of sleeping cats I saw here the other day? This thread is making me sleepy. So...very...sleepy.

C'mon, Baron. Only four more quality posts 'til you hit 100! So transparent... :lol
